For me it's so the ugly pimple on such a lovely face.
Apple seems kinda looking inside the bathroom cupboard to find if there's any makeup there that kan mask it as much as possible...
On iPhone it wasn't welcomed (and still annoying IMHO), but better defendable, as the benefits are there. More there than on MacBook Pro.

This is a horrible solution. It shrinks everything, so you end up with an image smaller than what you would see on the previous 16". I.e., the screen width of the AS 16" is only 1 mm larger than that of the i9 16". And you're clearly losing a lot more than 1/2 mm on each side when you do this.

It goes against the whole point of new 16" MBP's design, which is to give you more working screen real estate, not less.

The notch is Apple’s middle-fingered salute to all of us who complained about butterfly keyboards, touchbars, lack of ports, missing MagSafe, and various other courageous innovations over previous iterations of the MacBook. It’s like Apple’s way of reminding us “pros” who’s still calling the shots.

LOL, some people. Apple realizes that some apps won't get updated and offers a solution 'just in case' and people expect it to be the end solution.

It's a fix for abandonware. If you don't like Cinema 4D having a tiny loss of empty menu bar then direct your anger to the party responsible: the software developer who hasn't pushed out an update.

Ok... this will prevent apps from being hidden under the notch. Neat.

But it scales and shrinks the screen! WTF?

Congratulations! Your 16" Macbook Pro is now a 15" Macbook Pro with the same giant bezels you hated last year. And your 14" is now a 13"

I think I'd be happier with the menus on the same line as the notch... and I'll just not worry about apps hiding under it.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But this is no different than running an app in rosetta because it hasn't been updated and then complaining it isn't as fast.

This is a horrible solution. It reeks of rushing out a solution in time to ship. Hopefully they improve the software implementation around the ‘camera housing’.

Clearly menu items shouldn’t go behind the notch. And scaling the whole display down is an awful way of compensating for this. It would be much better to result in a non-standard resolution/ aspect ratio than shrinking everything.

Did you notice that “scale to fit” restores the bezels of the previous generation MBP on the left and right side as well (not just the top of the screen)? This is how it maintains the aspect ratio. It is literally scaling down the whole screen
Right? To me, if the solution is to “recreate” the bezels all around it basically negates the whole reason for shrinking the bezels and adding a notch. So weird!
I’m trying to stay open-minded, but I can almost hear Jonny grinding his teeth over the HW and SW design choices in recent generations. And Steve, oh god he’d have an absolute fit.

I expected the solution to "recreate" the bezel on the top by moving only the menu bar below the notch, not to add fake bezels to the sides too.

I guess Apple invested very little effort in this because they expect applications to be updated.

Exactly.

They "get rid of the notch" by shrinking the screen area by adding extra bezels on the top and sides! This is insane.

Here is before and after:

Quick... someone do this and measure the diagonal. It ain't 16.2" anymore!

:p

I personally do not like the Menu Bar.

iPadOS and iOS have no menu bar at all. No one complains.

A menu bar sort of exemplifies bad UI/UX design and hints at scripting to solve a problem the devs cannot represent visually.

Cinema 4D is exposing 10 years of Menu Bar hacks while refusing to implement a true GUI. Photoshop is guilty of this as well.

And even then, you shouldn’t be required to run a 16” MacBook Pro to fully utilize a pro app.

Imagine if Microsoft forced you to go the Menu bar (Edit -> Bold) to bold font a sentence in Microsoft Word.

I understand what you’re saying. Apple could have just moved the safe area below the menu bar, instead of shrinking the entire desktop, which would effectively eliminate the notch. It’s still a possibility and showcased in the full screen mode.

My initial thought when I saw the notch was that they made the menu bar taller vertically.

If it’s not clear, I don’t like the Menu bar, other than to see the time and close an app.

I hate nothing more than fiddling around in plain text in Xcode just to refactor and indent some code.

I literally have spent hours of my life in Xcode and Android Studio looking for Menu bar options.

16:10 is a standard aspect ratio because it’s what Apple has used for 10+ years.

When a dev designs an app, they usually use a percentage to scale views.

If you know the resolution aspect ratio is 16:10, you set your timeline to 40% of the screen height.

When you change aspect ratios, the GUI doesn’t look proper since it wasn’t designed for that aspect ratio.

This is fine if you resize windows since you cannot possibly determine the users preferred scale size.

That’s why Apple using 16:10 in full screen mode makes sense. An app has to be in full screen mode anyway to utilize 16:10.

but in the video it seems in order to show the whole menu bar, the whole visible area os the screen is reduced!! is like that?? it seems you goes from 14/16" to 13/15" again

Hope I'm wrong, if I'm right the fail would be size of TON 618

I was wondering OS simply would split menu bar to show items both sides…
