different needs for different people. how much will you pay to able to bring your home theater with you on planeS, hotels, to your bedroom. 100” tvs cost 10k+, projectors cheaper but pain to use outside dark room even with the new laser ust, not to mention have to hang a giant screen on the wall.

to have all this, potentially a much larger than 100” screen with no ambient light issues at 3.5k is very good value for folks who like their big screens.

of course it’s all wait for hands on to see if Apple can actually deliver the pq of a 4K laser projector, but all accounts seem to say yes. The projector manufacturers should be very nervous.
Not to mention no laser projectors I’ve seen do 3D and I still enjoy 3D movies😁

No-one buys a projector for one person, please link to these sources saying “projector manufacturers should be very nervous”.
I did. Why do people keep posting as if they speak for anyone but themselves? One of the reasons I’m so excited about this is because I want to be able to watch a movie while sitting outside by my firepit or in my future hot tub. Yes, all by myself

“Starting at $3499”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

They’ve lost their marbles. Entering a product space that has already failed to gain traction AND introducing a unit more expensive than half the computers they sell. This is insane.
How well were smartphones taking off before the iPhone? Smart watches? How quickly people forget the beforetimes

That’s cool and all. But 3500 and to be oblivious of said fire pit? Pretty niche.

Young whippersnappers, back in my day we actually made eye contact. Now you can just physically hide your face too.

I’m absolutely certain virtual reality is the next step for consumer tech. Whether or not it’s this release, think 10 years down the future. Everyone maxed their immersion and just a sea of glasses.

Many are seeing it ugly, but I envisioned it even bulkier. You need the resolution, sound, and your vision completely covered. Glasses alone won’t do that, yet.

Let’s be real, many of the early adopters will immerse themselves in a certain genre of “artistic” filmography. Just sitting on the sofa next to me-maw.

I wonder what the business case looked like for a video-game console type of approach, where the hardware is heavily subsidized and the hit is compensated by software and subscriptions.

This looked frankly better than I expected, but I have a hard time imagining it can reach mainstream success at US$3.5k. This pricing is on par with an M2 Macbook Air + an iPhone 14 Pro + an M1 iPad Air + an Apple Watch S8 + AirPods Pro.

I don't want to be the short-sighted guy who said iPhone was going to flop because it was expensive and didn't support MMS or whatever, but this pricing really feels out of reach for the mass market.
Apple makes premium products not meant for the mass market. They BECOME the market leader bc they are so superior people stretch their budget to get them.

Blackberry was king. Palm was even better imo. This isn’t anything like smartphones. Headsets are very niche.

A casual compute device (according to Apple’s own use cases, photos, internet, facetime, Apple Arcade) at mid-tier MacBook Pro prices.

You’re not the mainstream then. The vast majority of people like to be social with one another. We’re literally social animals who can’t survive without it. An exceptionally isolating device like this will always face extreme resistance from the general public.

This looks incredible. Writing app code on a screen hanging in the air, generated from my Mac? Side widgets available on either side to stay connected with co-workers? Yes please! I can't wait to try one out.... in a few years when I can afford a used unit. ;)

Sure. And most everyone else will try it once and move on.

Playing games wasn’t promoted as the main use for this. Your lack of imagination is the problem here

Apple has a solid track record of utterly failing in the gaming market. It makes absolute sense that they’d downplay that. Furthermore their primary competition is going to be the PlayStation VR, which they’re probably not interested in drawing direct comparisons to right now, if ever.
