Amazing

they can spontaneously give out a $10,000 gift card.

However, when ITMS goes into a continuous loop removing $2800 from my bank account overnight, it takes 6-10 business days to return my money.

No, i'm not making that up. it really happened this weekend.

Sweet, I Hope that they will have a little conference/press release where they reveal the new i7 Macbook Pros at the same time.

With iTunes gift card I can only buy songs/apps/tv shows (in summary media) I don't have any personal benefit of this.

Maximum I can do is sell it on eBay but who in his/her right mind would buy $10,000 worth of iTunes gift card. I am sure someone is out there!

i would buy most of the items in the my local apple store ( if i could even use the card for that purpose) and just say put it in a bag but it wont fit :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

given that it's 9.8 billion people currently, you have a 1 in 200,000,000 chance of winning. That's still comparable to most lotteries. i'd rather go with the lottery.

What is 9.8 billion people currently?

Really?!

People are bitching about a contest prize!?

And you won't pay tax on $10,000, you pay tax on the cash value of the card which is probably 1/100th of a cent. Then you pay any normal applicable sales tax on the goods you purchase using it. These types of cards are not considered to be money, cash or income, they're considered to be proprietary credit and have no real market value.

maybe a collector pays 20.000.-

i'd see it as free lifetime iTunes content

No opinion on the contest, but I have to admire Apple's consistency... slick counter, no Flash :p

i think apple are more concerned about the 10 billionth download than they are about innovative hardware.

I don't understand why anyone would bitch about this. I desperately want a $10,000 card. It's not worthless... I currently have 20,000 songs, and this $10,000 gift card would only cover half of that. Plenty of people would find it valuable, and personally I would love an unlimited itunes pass.

It is concerning how you would pay taxes on something like this though...

Running Counter Depends on Your Computer

If I go to the countdown site simultaneously with my iPhone and my Mac, they both start with nearly the same number. But my Mac Pro's countdown counter runs several times faster than the running counter on the iPhone. So if you're going to try timing it just right I think you better reload that page often as the number gets close to 10B or your count may be way off.

Apple said:
Prizes. One (1) winner will receive one (1) US $10,000 iTunes Gift Card. Total US Retail Value of all prizes is $10,000.00.

This is from Apples countdown rules.

I'm thinking taxes will destroy... Still kind of want it though...

I don't want $10,000 worth of iTunes music. I haven't even spent the $15 gift card I got last year because Apple Canada won't let me use it to buy apps.

I hope the winner is someone who actually appreciates the prize.

Just curious? If you "own" some digital music, how did you obtain it if you're not interested in buying from iTunes?

So close to 10,000,000,000 songs have been downloaded by consumers since the year 2000...yet the Labels still insist on more money and claim poor sales overall.

Even if it is 1billion songs/year since 2000, the Labels cry they are losing money via the iTunes channel.

Now I don't know how many "albums" were downloaded which obviously consist of more than 1 song...but let's say 80% of the song downloads were albums (each album consists of 12 tracks let's say) and 20% were pure single downloads.

20% of 10billion = 2billion songs @$1.00 = $2B (and then the Labels get a cut of that)
80% of 10billion = 8billion songs but the "album" sold for $8 = (8billion/12 tracks per album) x $8 =666,666,666 albums x $8 = $5.3B (and then the Labels get a cut of that)

$2B + $5.3B = $7.3B total sales via iTunes shopping cart. I don't know what the Labels get for a cut. Now let's do this kind of math for Amazon and other online stores. Then traditional cd sales. Yeah, the music biz is dying.

My math is a bit rough but I think you get the picture.

Given 3B app downloads, 10B seems somewhat low to me. Sure a lot of apps are free, but the music store has been around a lot longer and is available to a lot more users (rather than just iphone/touch users). In any case, grats Apple.

Considering that there's only 6 billion people in the world, 10 billion songs is somewhat impressive.

Maybe...I bet their "song count" included songs part of a cd or compilation. So if you downloaded a Madonna cd with 15 tracks, that 1 single purchase would count as 15 downloads. But who knows how Apple is counting...nor the people that screw up their iPod/iTunes and buy a few songs again.

You know...there are actually some people that have found out the secret of

CD RIPPING

And don't give me that piracy ****. I am royally pissed, that I have to search the net for the newest DVD-cracking software, jsut to extract the audio from Live DVDs I bought.

Yeah - I bought them, so to my pleasure I should be allowed to get the audio from a DVD in my iTunes library. Given the fact that the DVD usually contains more tracks than a CD (compare e.g. Linkin Park "Live in Texas" CD/DVD Digipack).

Oh...btw...I should add that I am perfectly happy with old-school OSex and mac3dec - but, alas, I haven't found anything comparable for an Intel based machine.
