I have not read much about the "non-purchace" entry form on Apple's site. It says you can enter 25 times a day, but how will this give you a chance to win if it is based on the person who downloads the 10 billionth song? Is it worth entering 25 times a day on their site?

It really isn't. This part of the rules confuses most people.

There is no reason to enter into the contest yet. It's whoever downloads the 10 billionth song, or whoever enters without purchase after the 9,999,999,999 song download.

The limit seems to be implemented to confuse people into believing they get 25 chances to win per day. There will be no drawing, except for simultaneous downloads.

Also, non-purchase entries do not affect the counter. The count is only of songs.

I don't understand why Apple would implement these rules, but I'm sure they have their reasons. Also, if you enter 25 times on the day of the 9,999,999,999 download before it is time, you cannot win unless you download a song.

I have to agree with some of the people here, after 10billion downloads I think Mr. Jobs could be a lot more generous than to offer me a gift card that HAS to be used on his iTunes store. :(

No, I think the limit is to help defend against people writing scripts that hammer submit the non-purchase form once the 10 billionth purchase approaches.

Nahhh, that'd be useless. They probably have the non-purchase entries time stamped and would pick the one closest in time. So any script-driven entries wouldn't have any inherent advantages over anyone else's.

And once again, us Québecers are excluded.

I really hate the policy on contests which requires a mathematical question in order to win the prize.

He!.... 2 + 3 - 1 = ? ...
...Come on!

The mathematical question is from a historical law to differenciate 'skill' from 'pure hazard'... don't worry, just write 4 !

The advantage is hitting the site very frequently, thus increasing the probability of hitting just right and being "closest in time".

What do you mean? Can't either type of entry win if it's the 10 billionth entry?

"the winner is solely responsible for all applicable taxes, fees and surcharges associated with prize receipt and/or use"

Not sure I would want to pay the taxes for this "prize".

I think what this means is 7 cent songs... If you look at any other coupon or prize money, it will say that cash value is 1/100th of a cent. I'm sure it's the same deal here. That means you pay 1/200th of a cent in taxes and then 7 cents for every song you buy on this. I could be wrong, though.

Yes, but entering in 25 times a day will not help you chances. The only entry that matters is the one you place at the time the 9,999,999,999 song is downloaded.

Each entry doesn't count. So say you develop a habit of waking up and immediately entering the contest 25 times. If you do so and then the download occurs in the evening, it will be impossible for you to win.

I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time explaining it. If you're confused, disregard what I said. :)

I understand that there's an economic crisis on at the moment, maybe Apple is feeling the pinch too! :p

Apple recorded its best non-holiday quarter (Q1 FY 2009) during the recession with a revenue of $8.16 billion and a profit of $1.21 billion, so I would say they are fairing fairly well :p

You know...there are actually some people that have found out the secret of

CD RIPPING

And don't give me that piracy ****. I am royally pissed, that I have to search the net for the newest DVD-cracking software, jsut to extract the audio from Live DVDs I bought.

Yeah - I bought them, so to my pleasure I should be allowed to get the audio from a DVD in my iTunes library. Given the fact that the DVD usually contains more tracks than a CD (compare e.g. Linkin Park "Live in Texas" CD/DVD Digipack).

Oh...btw...I should add that I am perfectly happy with old-school OSex and mac3dec - but, alas, I haven't found anything comparable for an Intel based machine.

totally, totally get where you are coming from, but people like you are exactly the sort of customers apple despise in their quest to OWN the media WE pay for.

lol..actually, Mr.Jobs doesn't have to give you anything!

Congrats to SJ and Apple.

I love the way these days 0.2 of a Billion is 'almost there!' And it is, wow... and I thought that extra 16K on my Apple ][ language card was something else! Numbers sure get smaller as I get older.

I know right. 200,000,000. We're real close.....

But I guess with everyone wanting the 10 billionth download, it will grow exponentially that last day or so.

I wish we could trade this $10,000 iTunes card for say $1000, maybe $2000 at the Apple online store. That would be a cool prize.

Just curious? If you "own" some digital music, how did you obtain it if you're not interested in buying from iTunes?

It's called cd ripping...and I've been doing it since 1995. And by doing it myself, I can choose any MP3 bitrate or even go lossless (which I prefer).

I have over 5000 cds, legally purchased and obtained.

There are still a large % of people who still buy cds...and there is even a larger % who still own the cds they purchased before iTunes became mainstream around 2005.
