I guess this is why Amazon is considered a "tech company." Because 1. they're
online, and 2. they use a massive database to store your product affinities.
You know, the "Frequently Bought Together," and "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought..."

Or it is considered a tech company because EC2, S3, Route 53 and all the other AWS things

----------

There are already iAds, and nobody ever sees an iAd unless they choose to install an iAd-supported app. An iOS device out of the box has no iAds.

And user data usage/collection of any kind is optional on iOS anyway. Follow the money: Apple doesn't make their money collecting user data the way Google does.

You know that an Android device out of the box has no ads and any user data usage/collection of any kind is optional, don't you?

If you're saying that Apple's position and track record with regards to user data collection and privacy is truly same as Google's, then I think that's just word games. The reality is, collecting user data is where Google makes their millions, and it's why Google services are free. And getting people to use Google services for the purpose of data collection is why Android exists, and why it is given away free to phone makers.

Also, not all Android devices are alike "out of the box," and using Android with Google services all turned off is not really the full or typical Android experience.

Dear Apple,

Don't be *Google*.

Signed, a fan.

Dear John.B

Worry not. Through iAds, we are only combining synergies, shift paradigms, and innovating in the area of personal interaction with your iDevice. You will continue to enjoy your iDevice just as you always have... only more so.

Sincerly

Apple

p.s. Southwest Airlines has chosen to send you a special promotion on flights to areas that may interest you.

Based on this quote "one of the biggest players in online advertising", why does anyone come to the conclusion it's Apple? That's like calling Kia one of the biggest players in the auto industry.

I thought that Google was the evil one ho used your personal info to sell you stuff.

Et tu, Apple?

----------

Really? I thought 'Google sells the Nexus phone for $350 because they mine your data, Apple don't'

Apple both sells you a phone at a huge profit margin AND mines your data. Anything for a buck...

----------

There is nothing I love more than iAds clogging up the limited screen real estate on my iPhone.

Maybe THAT is how Apple will increase screen size i their phones, but still have them be able to be operable with one hand? The excess screen real estate will be occupied by ads!

Best of both worlds!

Because in the minds of the great flock of sheep that is a large portion of the human race, ads are bad. Why? Because that's what everyone says. Why do they say that? Because historically ads have been nothing but a nuisance. Targeted ads solve that problem, but it'll take a few entrepreneuring individuals to lead the flock to this new way of thinking about advertising. Come to think of it, most issues tend to be like this. Independent thought is not too common.

Pull your head out of your @**. People hating ads doesn't make them sheep even if their reasons are wrong. On top of being annoying, ads are worthless because they do nothing to help you make an informed logical decision when purchasing products and services.

Holding an unpopular opinion doesn't make you intelligent. You're just stupid for being contrarian.

I am of the opinion that advertising is generally a plague upon mankind. I hope Apple don't go any further down that path than they already have.

I realize this is the general impression, but when you have spent time relying on advertising for your livelihood, you'll feel better. It allows people to view high quality content for free, while the authors of that content still make money. Without advertising, you're going to have to pay - not just for your apps and TV, but for your news, your forum, and practically everything.

Yeah… on balance I think I'd prefer that. People always say ads mean you get stuff 'for free'… but it's not really for free, it's just payment in other ways… whether it's time, mindshare, or an indirect part of the price you pay for everything that is still paid for but has an advertising budget... I think a world without advertising would have got by just fine, but it's hard for us to imagine because we've all lived with it all our lives.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the reality of the situation, it's just not a situation I like. And so would prefer Apple not be drawn into that - they are, to me, very a much a company whose products you pay for, not a company who give you free stuff in order to make you the product like some of their rivals. Apart from anything else, it's a point of differentiation, giving consumers the choice. I'd hate that to be compromised. I am glad iAds was a relative flop for this reason, it's just not a business I really want Apple to have a profit motivation for.

Thank you!, I knew that, I hope the rest of the fanboys realize apple is no angel compared to google

Apple's CEO isn't the one who said their business was to get "right up to" the "creepy line", but don't cross it. Apple's business is staying far, far away from the "creepy line". Google will go as far into creepy territory as they think they can get away with.

Intersting

How do you find out what is available to buy and what they offer if there are no advertisements?

Correct. The fact that they are the largest Internet ad business is not automatically a good thing.

Google makes almost all their money by collecting user data and selling ads with it. Not disreputable in the sense of illegal, but in the sense of pushing privacy boundaries as far as they can, and of having a (justified) reputation that makes their ad system more intrusive than Apple's, and their business less focussed on our best interests.

If you're OK with that, then no problem :)

I prefer Apple's method of making money: the customer is ME, not advertisers, and it is ME they need to keep happy!

You do realise that if apple opens this ad exchange they will be using EXACTLY THE SAME methods as google. Don't start thinking Apple are all inniocent here, it's all about money. You'd be a fool to think they could even attempt to pull this off without ios doing some form of mining of your activities in a larger scale than it already does.

Every single advertising on a IOS device is downgrading its true potential

Apple you greedy ..... basterds. Stop selling everybody out. Don't be like Google!

How do you know? When you activate your iDevice, have you read the entire terms and conditions? There are a million 'loopholes' there that basically allows Apple to save your data NOW, and while they might now mine it and sell it now, they have the right to do so in the future. Just because Tim Cook hasn't made a statement does not mean that Apple is any better than Google.

I don't have Android devices and probably never will, but I am not blind to think iPhone or iPad are any better privacy-wise, they work better, look better, and provide better experience, that's all.

well it's gonna be very frustrating to see 30-seconds ads before i can visit the itunes store. apple please be apple, dont try to copy google.

I think of Amazon as an e-commerce company that uses a lot of proprietary business software to sell physical goods and digital content to customers. And I include the Kindle lines in that e-commerce infrastructure. They're running a proprietary, closed fork of Android that replaces Google's e-commerce infrastructure with Amazon's.

So yeah, I'll stick with (most of) my original statement:

I guess this is why Amazon is considered a "tech company." Because 1. they're online, and 2. they use a massive database ...
