I was a die-hard leather case fan until I had to switch to the silicone. Now I wouldn’t switch back. Not one crack and stays true to color much longer.

Apple should give up on the other option and just offer more colors of silicone, and maybe stop discontinuing 1/2 the colors for “last year’s” phone considering they sell the 15 alongside the 16.

Let me ask you this...whats so wrong with leather? as others have pointed out, the cows are still being slaughtered for food....AS THEY HAVE BEEN FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS...Leather products have been used for centuries as well. Same as wood and paper! What are we never going to eat beef again or cut down another tree to build a house? Also isnt there synthetic "Vegan" leather thats just as good? I know pleather tends to break down over time but idk much about various other forms of leather.

What about all the 3rd party case makers who use leather AND PLASTIC in all its various forms. What about Rubber like materials too? Those are used all the time in the armored cases like otterbox uses.

Why is apple so hell bent on this hippy dippy save the world nonsense? Im all for them reducing greenhouse and carbon footprints. Im all for them using recyclable material. These are good things but this stupid idea of fine woven cases over leather or fake leather cases is just stupid and is of lower quality at the same premium price!
Car seat leatherette is very durable. Takes a beating. Tears are due to people with sharp objects. When it fails it’s usually at the stitches, and cases don’t tend to have stitches.

Not sure why people think that leather is somehow "free" given the cow is raised for meat. The value of the cow to the farmer includes all the components, including the leather. If people stop buying leather, then either the farmer has to put up the price of the meat to compensate, or raise less cattle to increase the price per cow through scarcity. Either way, slightly fewer people can afford to eat as much beef and less cows are reared, leading to less land, food and water being used and less methane produced.

It is one of Apple's values to move away from animal products: whether you like that or not is up to you and you are free to either stop buying Apple products in protest, or just buy a 3rd party leather case.
Also, the tanning process is toxic.

Everything is “toxic”, including the production of batteries for those wonderful EV vehicles, or basically everything that we use everyday in our ordinary lives, 90% of which is sourced from petroleum.
Such California-driven eco-terrorist mindset is amazing - it’s almost as if mankind doesn’t deserve to live on Earth anymore.

I'm glad that Apple refers to FineWoven as a leather alternative and not something goofy like "vegan leather". We already have to deal with things called, "almond milk" when that is nothing more than "nut juice".

The only problem that I had with FineWoven was the price.

I'm interested to see what these fabric cases look and feel like. But being Apple, they'll probably cost twice as much as is reasonable.

We need Jony Ive describing how skilled artisans from around the world painstakingly weaving the individual threads from the remotest Tibetan villages.

did I advocate for EVs ever? They are environment disasters. Manufacturing the amount of copper alone needed to go full EV, including the copper needed to improve the infrastructure would decimate the environment.

Apple, get the memo.

This eco-nonsense trend is over and people have rejected it. Cars are going back to gas (or at least hybrid), Beyond Meat is going bankrupt and FineWoven created nothing but waste since it was a failure.

Go back to regular leather and charge whatever price you see fit. You’re not going to make everyone happy and we as a society are done catering to the complainers. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.

Calling something "premium" doesn't make it so. That "fine"woven was a piece of garbage. I don't care about premium feel (whatever that means), I want a case that doesn't look awful after 20 minutes of use. I look forward to seeing how this all plays out.

I'd love to see Apple try an alternative like cactus or apple (so on brand) leather. Hearing "rubbery" already puts me off, never liked how the silicone cases stick to everything and pull out your pockets and lint, so the alternative to leather should be non-sticky like it was.

They never learn. For me, I will never NOT buy an aramid fiber case. I have a super thin one and it takes a beating. Just changed to a new one of the 15 pro max. The other is still good. Just beat up. It made it almost 2 years.

Just bring leather back, seriously.
Leather is naturally, regrowing and more durable than any of these plastic and silicone “alternatives”.
I stopped getting cases from Apple after they discontinued leather.
Leather is not sustainable. During the tanning process huge amounts of toxic waste and water pollution are created.

Just say you like to wrap your tech in dead animals instead of doing some green washing.

For Christ sake just fetch leather back.

Leather is a by product of the meat industry whichever way you look at it. And what better way of making the most of the animal, than to use as much of the animal as possible.

What happens when more and more companies ditch leather, the result is it will go into landfill.

Centuries ago, hunters killed bison solely for their skins. That’s no longer the case today. Animals are primarily raised for meat, and their hides are byproducts. By using those hides for leather, we’re actually reducing waste and making use of natural resources. While plastic can be recycled, it requires significant energy and still results in materials that take decades to break down. Leather, on the other hand, is biodegradable and far more sustainable.

It is common that in premium leather, vegetable tanning is used. Apple could use such leather. Their leather cases were priced premium but leather was low quality with paint on it.

That might be a better argument if Apple was the only leather consumer, but compared to the larger market Apple's leather cases are a tiny part of the market so most of the industrial outlay has already been made, as has the handling of toxins. On the other hand Apple using finewoven or this successor requires a lot of resources dedicated directly to it, since it's not made at scale for anyone else, and I'd be willing to bet that overhead makes it actually more toxic overall than using leather

No problem - Apple loves to brag about its "sustainable" supply chain - so just use/invent whatever tanning process that is not toxic anymore (assuming that's even true), or treat the residues accordingly.

Genuine leather, good - everything else, bad.

I’ll just buy a black leather case from another vendor when the 17PM is released, that’s Apple’s loss. Instead Apple is going to sell a fabric (plastic) case in odd colors and call it better for the environment. It will be grippy… 😂

Bastards. Bring back first-party leather cases.

There are always outliers.

We have folks that "live inside their Vision Pro"

Someone here is probably still using "iPod Socks"

I guarantee that someone around the forum is still irate about the loss of the TouchBar

on and on..
All of my iPods live in iPod socks haha.

“Moreover, there is also apparently the possibility of offering "Liquid Glass"-style cases”

Oh neat, an anti-theft security case. No one will be able to recognize it’s an iPhone.

If these guys actually ventured out of their bubble they'd realise that in, certain places, kangaroos are culled sustainably because they have to be. The leather is then used in a variety of products, such as football boots. Why are they not using this leather?
I think you vastly underestimate the amount of leather Apple would need to make cases for a new iPhone release. They’d probably have to kill all the kangaroos.

Australia already lost a war to Emus, those kangaroos might be able to take on apple
