The Apple brand silicone cases are the best and I hope they keep making them. I personally don't like hard plastic cases. The silicone is the right amount of grippy and protection for me.
Totally agree. But when you drop it and break the silicone “seal” and it all starts to unravel, it’s bad.

I don’t understand the logic “minority cares about the leather use, therefore we should use leather”. Guys, are you ok? Apple is not doing this for democratic reasons 🙂 they do it because it is the right thing to do.

Nobody asked to remove chargers. Apple did. Nobody asked to remove AirPods. Apple did. Nobody asked to stop using leather. Apple did.

Whether they did it for financial concerns or another is a different topic, but just because majority doesn’t care whether Apple produces leather products or not, doesn’t mean Apple should re-introduce leather.
The right thing to do has bit them in the rear many times already. They remove stuff and then realize how much of a bigger problem they created. None of the current Apple cases are durable now, silicone will get slippery, plastic just has horrible grip, especially with people with small hands and bigger phones. Granted there’s third party brands that make quality replacements like Bull strap and nomad, but that patina and durability from leather cases are unmatched to anything recent.

Believe it or not there’s a huge majority that cares but like any other consumer, they moved on. However, if they bring it back, it would be cool whether vegan or not if it feels right. A lot of consumers want iPods to return but we know they won’t make them again, hence why they get other alternatives like walkmans or portable hi res audio players or just upgrade the internals of their iPod classics. Money that could be made for Apple, but they make up for it on services now, etc.

I loved my FineWoven case, but I'm down for this alternative. I don't and won't ever go leather again.
So I ordered FineWoven, read horrible reviews before it arrived and then it was stigmatized before I ever used it.

The criticism was outrageously overblown and overstated. Having said that, I still prefer the back leather.

If these guys actually ventured out of their bubble they'd realise that in, certain places, kangaroos are culled sustainably because they have to be. The leather is then used in a variety of products, such as football boots. Why are they not using this leather?

Now if Apple wants to lecture us on why its morally right or wrong to use leather, or perhaps even what animals it's 'okay' for, then by all means they can go ahead - but they're not fooling anyone with this virtue signalling. It's about as cringeworthy as their Mother Nature sketch.
Cowhide is sustainable. Not using it is more environmentally unfriendly than using it.

How is it the “right thing to do”?
Not sure why people think that leather is somehow "free" given the cow is raised for meat. The value of the cow to the farmer includes all the components, including the leather. If people stop buying leather, then either the farmer has to put up the price of the meat to compensate, or raise less cattle to increase the price per cow through scarcity. Either way, slightly fewer people can afford to eat as much beef and less cows are reared, leading to less land, food and water being used and less methane produced.

It is one of Apple's values to move away from animal products: whether you like that or not is up to you and you are free to either stop buying Apple products in protest, or just buy a 3rd party leather case.
This is not true. Cowhide is a byproduct, not a single cow is slaughtered for their hide. Reducing leather demand doesn’t decrease cow slaughter, cattle are raised for meat and dairy. It increases cowhide waste, with unused hides often landfilled or burned, adding to environmental issues:

“industry reports suggest 10-20% of hides go unused, equating to ~3-6 billion pounds of potential cowhide waste yearly.”

The comments in here are fascinating. Need to bust out the popcorn.

I could care less what material my case is of. I am just tired of dull dark colors. Hope they do some brighter options that look glossy, like a Laguna Seca blue.

Just give people leather, jesus. The cows are dying for food regardless, so you may as well put the hide to use too. Sick of Apple's save the world BS.
Even if Apple did start selling leather again, i would not buy one from Apple. Since Apple stopped selling them i leather to BullStrap. Way better quality and not painted so they actually wear like leather should not chip and just look stupid after use.

The only reason why Apple won't bring the leather case back is because they just can't admit that they were wrong. It has nothing to do with the environment.

I wish they'd bring back leather, as long as people eat meat leather is sustainable and just as or more environmentally friendly than things like finewoven since it typically comes from animals *already being slaughtered for meat*. I understand the ethical objections but it doesnt save any animals. I've switched to andar and bullstrap for my leather cases and such now, but Apple's first party ones were always solid and I wouldve been happy to keep buying those

I don't use any case. It just gets annoying how dumb they're being about it. Every other year is make some new case that ends up being terrible, then they go and try to make a new one. Just stick with what works.

After 2 years of usage on my iPhone 15 Pro, and dropping my phone on concrete (once from one of those city scooter thingies, and I was moving fast) - my FineWoven case has held up quite well. Much better than any silicone case I had. A few scratches, still looks nice and it’s still pleasant to the touch.

I honestly don’t get the outrage. I really don’t. I assumed the case would break apart and just decided to use it until it did, not taking any special care, quite the opposite. And it held up great. If I could get the same one for iPhone 17 Pro, I would.

Yes, it’s the latest Internet craze. I’m not saying they’re not harmful but the level of harm is debatable.

If you’re someone that lives a healthy lifestyle then perhaps it’s something to consider.

If you’re like me, 100+ pounds overweight, bad cholesterol through the roof, shoving McDonald’s cheeseburgers and soda down my throat, it’s not a consideration.

My point is people are freaking out about plastic and afraid to touch paper receipts but eating toxic food every day. It doesn’t make sense.
Welp, I love your honesty. I’ve lost over 50 lbs and have 15 or so left and joined a gym. Granted, I was stuck in bed one day with a herniated disc that made me hope for a heart attack or stroke, so I’m pretty motivated to not go back to that. That said, my apple leather case I got on sale for $17 is my favorite thing I’ve ever purchased. I simply love it.

Nobody wants a damn fabric case, never mind to pay a premium for it

Agree and another third party will sell it and make the money if Apple refuses to do so

Leather was fine.

Leather is not an environmental by-product of cows we happen to slaughter for meat anyways.

In many markets, leather is a significant co-product. The value of hides contributes to the overall profitability of cattle farming, so demand for leather helps sustain livestock production rather than simply using “waste.”

And even if hides are used, the environmental costs of raising cattle (deforestation, methane, water use) don’t disappear. Leather production adds further impacts through chemical tanning, energy use, and toxic waste and water pollution.

When leather demand rises, it will incentivize more cattle farming.

So moving away from “wrapping tech in dead animal skins” is definitely a good move from an environmental perspective.

What is “right” for you is not right for 99% of the civilized world. Leather is, by far, the best and most durable material for such uses.

And to imply that companies do things for “noble” aims, give me a break. If they were really concerned about whatever overstated impacts on the environment, they would not charge you double for those “bio”-certified products you see in grocery stores. Same for those companies asking you to accept online bills instead of paper: cost reduction.

Likewise, as for Apple’s decision to remove charges or headphones, exactly the same hypocritical crap: the ONLY reason they did it was to increase margins while keeping the SAME prices for customers. Nothing to do with electronic waste at all, other than encouraging you to give them your unused stuff for free so they can recycle it and, again, sell it to you at brand new prices.
