I'm kind of thinking (based on one of the comments about Beats streaming) that maybe Apple doesn't even quite get it with the iPod touch anymore. I think maybe because it's called an 'iPod' their focus is on the traditional market for the iPod series. While I'm sure people do use it that way, I bet a lot more use it as a smartphone without the cellular/contract. For example, the primary purposes for mine are podcasts and Kindle book reading.

Ditto, most iPod touch fans are really using it as smaller pocket-sized tablet.

They can rename it "ipad pocket" or "ipad nano", we'll be ok with that too... Apple, just give us an updated model, whatever you call it.

This doesn't apply to the 5 or 5c as they both support Apple Pay through the Apple Watch. Not to mention the 5s.
Not every iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s owner has an Apple Watch. Apple would be pleased to sell those 100 million or so people an Apple Watch or a new iPhone or a new iPod Touch.

I get that the idea of an iPod may seem strange now, what with most people streaming their music from the cloud on their iPhones.

Personally I use my iPod touch in place of an iPhone. I don't want to pay the tel com companies insane monthly fees or shell out full price for an unlocked iPhone. I'd much rather have an iPod touch that I use in tandem with my iPad that has an unlimited data plan from att that I'm grandfathered in on. I can make and receive calls, send texts and surf the web.

I like using my iPod touch as a camera when I travel. So an updated camera would be welcome.

I think Apple should just rebrand the iPod touch and call it an iPad nano. Cause that's what people would use it as. For gaming. Web surfing. Picture taking etc. and less of a traditional music iPod anymore. So rebrand it. Remarket it. Release a 4.7" and a 5.5" like the iPhone 6. Add a SIM card slot for cellular like the iPads. Bingo. Instant sales. Guaranteed.

I liked the iPod touch when I was traveling. Since you can get them for roughly a third the price of an iPhone, I was never as worried about them getting stolen (thankful they never had). With WiFI, iMessage, Skype, offline maps and a camera, they are handy travel companions.

I know people keep talking about these services... but are most people really using them? It seems like a horrible waste of bandwidth (which is still super-expensive) and with the compression needed to keep the bandwidth down, I'd think the quality would just be so-so as well.

I'm surprised people still buy the iPod Touch. I figure everyone who would want one has an iPhone at this point.
Nah. For my smartphone needs, I've got a Samsung Galaxy s4. I don't want a 2nd phone just to get to iOS stuff

The Watch will replace the shuffle in many ways... So that's also solved...
Technically, it won't replace the Shuffle because the Watch needs to pair up with an Iphone5+

Seeing as market for iPods are just portable media devices, a lot of fitness and kid users, I don't see the benefit of Apple Pay on it. A 64 bit processor is just unnecessary for a device of that nature. I was kinda hoping they would kill off the iTouch as an unnecessary product. Most people can buy an iPhone refurb or a cheap Android phone to use as a MP3 player as a standalone. My 16 GB iPhone 5C cost less than a 32 GB iPod Touch, but with more functionality.
For MP3 player, I've got an Ipod Classic. May as well get a device that's dedicated towards that.

Many of the cheap iphones aren't really worth it. They'll be hard pressed to support newer updates, if at all. The ones that are worth it are still pricy considering Apple products hold more resale value.

Last I checked, IpT5 went down to $230 for 32GB model. For Iph5C, a quick search shows off contract prices to be $350+. If there is a new Iph5C for less than $230 off contract, I'd like to see a link

EDIT: ahh, you did mention refurb. Well, still not and apples to apples comparison, as the IpT5 is new.

Yeah, Pandora & Spotify use insane amounts of bandwidth. Luckily, I have an unlimited data plan on my iPad mini from att that I'm grandfathered in on. Otherwise it could get quite pricey.

Totally agree. I travel a lot, and my iPod touch 5 was my favorite. Great little camera. I could txt and send pics. Loved it. It survived all my adventures overseas...but Unfortunately when I got home it went thru the wash. Doh! Now it's dead. Want to get a new one, but will wait for this rumored iPod touch 6

This is good - I want to see them update it, and I might even buy a few. The camera/video and processor capabilities are especially important.

But it's also a sign of how little innovation and direction Apple currently has. I don't think their CEO's the type to do this, and somehow he's not inspiring/hiring the people/person to be the visionary either.

It makes sense to carry on with a product if people still want it - and I'm one of them - but their willingness to make another iteration shows a lack of ideas for any new product segment they might be working on instead.

Dick Tracy watch? Old idea. The world is so different now that it may not even sell that well. Looks like someone's trying to create his childhood dream, rather than manufacture what really makes sense for the 21st century.

How about the world's lightest and most efficient notebook with a full-sized-keyboard?
Impressive? Yes.
Innovative and creative? Not really.

When Apple execs say they're being innovative they're deluding themselves. A five-year-plus automobile project will not make up for their lack of new and worthwhile products today.

Again, updating the iPod Touch is something you do when you don't have any new ideas.
They don't really need to innovate if they're making money.

Sure, but that number must be dropping, or Apple would have paid more attention to the refreshes and improvements.

But hey, if people want to spend $200 on a iPhone without the phone when you can pick up and iTouch (with a phone) from ebay iPhone 5 and/or 5s(in Sept) for less.

Then let em.
It can be risky getting a used iPhone... you don't know if the battery's been run all the way down, etc.

You can change the battery in an iPhone in about 5-10 min, if you don't want to do it yourself or don't know how you could have a friend do it or go to a place for a battery change. It's ubiquitous enough that you probably have someone in your friend circle that can handle an iPhone battery change. At least for the 5. 5s and 5c. Probably for the 4 and 4s as well.

If you buy a used iPhone on eBay I think you get 6 months buyer protection through PayPal.

I'd be wary about trusting PayPal for any protection.

I'm thinking someone who springs for new stuff like in the iPhone category may not have somebody to be able to change it for them. For servicing, it should be fine so long as you get it cheap enough such that THAT plus the service is still within your price range.

There may be other issues with the iPhone itself... not limited to the battery, but as someone who has purchased used electronics, I will acknowledge it's just a risk you need to take.

Yea, I guess I'm just getting a bit out of touch. I'm trying to put myself back in the days when I spent any free parts of them listening to music... and whether I'd be happy with such a service apart from owning my CD collection, etc.

Since I started learning through recorded audio, and then podcasting, I'm just kind of hooked too much to go back to radio, or sadly, even much music for my day to day. I guess I need to mix it up more one of these days. :)

I keep waiting for an iDevice bigger than the iPod Touch 5G, but smaller than the iPad Mini screen; to replace my iPod 4G. I keep stacking up more money to buy one/some.

I'd also like the choice to get a variant with cell-data plans like the iPad Minis have.

And since the iPod touch 5G feels like it weighs nothing, I'd like the choice to buy one twice or three times as thick with that added size being all battery.

Also, the touch ID would be nice.
Son and I were just talking about how much we love the iPod Touch 5G. I just will not buy one for myself as I keep expecting an new one to emerge. But I am THIS close to buying some android thing-y instead. But I am too invested in iCloud.

And I will never own a smart phone with a data plan, unless someone offers very very cheap cell data.

I hope this is true, those who think it's not worth updating remember that some of us just buy them for music and the convenience of not having to sync with a computer to get new music. It's also a cheap way to get apps, less hassle than an iPhone with a data/cellular plan. I don't buy stuff right as it is released usually but if this comes out I will in a heartbeat.

I am STILL WAITING/wanting this device. I will likely NOW buy an iPad with LTE (e-sim). I'd like to ditch my iPhone+CELL, and use something like my previous Treo.. .but now, Adam Curry has me interested in Asha phones from 2013. Or something similar. The laser-focus of Palm Treos to make CALLS and do physical keyboard text/sms messages are/were great. The iPod Touch XL (or iPad MICRO) would be my ideal internet-enabled (via LTE) device. Phone plus app/web device COMBINED I've found really sucks/blows.

Apple is expected to announce a new iPod touch later this year, according to AppleInsider. The report, citing a source familiar with the plans, claims that the refreshed portable media player will likely have a similar design as the current model released over two-and-a-half years ago, and speculates that the next-generation device could have camera and processor improvements.

Apple has not refreshed the iPod touch since October 2012, when the portable media player was updated with an ultra-thin and colorful design, A5 processor and Lightning connector. iPod sales have been declining for several years, becoming a largely insignificant part of Apple's product lineup, anchored by the iPhone, iPad and Mac. The company no longer discloses iPod sales in its quarterly results after reporting 2.9 million units sold in Q4 2014.

The report is entirely speculative about possible new features the next-generation iPod touch could have, including a 64-bit A7 processor, increased storage space, and improved iSight and FaceTime cameras. Additionally, it would make sense for the new iPod touch to support Apple Pay, which would require locked down NFC capabilities and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner. Beats-related features could also be in store following Apple's $3 billion acquisition of the company in May 2014.

If the report proves accurate, Apple could announce its next-generation iPod touch during its iPhone event in September or iPad event in October that it typically holds each year. It is also possible that Apple may quietly update the iPod touch through a press release or website update, given that iPods are no longer as significant for Apple.

Unless as in my case my iPhone 6 Plus is 4 years old. Battery health is 87% and it’s getting pretty slow.
My next phone will only get 1 os upgrade instead of 4. I don’t live close to an Apple store to easily get my battery replaced.
