Or just buy the phone without a monthly plan - that's what most people in the world do.

if most people in the world buy an iphone and don't use it on cellular, i'm certainly out of touch

who does this? what countries are you talking about where most people do this?

I'm so happy to hear this news. I have a Moto G 4G and a 5th Gen iPod touch as my daily drivers, I'm a podcast Junkie so iTunes is essential and I can tether from the Moto G so I get the best of both worlds. I have an iPad, an iMac and an iPod touch, but prefer having an Android phone.

I hope they make it compatible with the Apple Watch, I feel having to own an iPhone is a barrier to anyone interested in it.

But then the phone costs a lot more, and its way more expensive than an iPod touch.

See, the reason there's a group of hardcore iPod touch fans is because it was the *first iOS based tablet you could put in your pocket*... Some of us like having a **tablet** that's small enough to put in your pocket.

They can rebrand it "iPad Pocket" or "iPad Nano" for all we care. We just want a tablet that you can pocket (which is what the iPod touch was all this time, until they stopped updating it).

This is great news. I really want an updated Nano with 128G, wifi, bluetooth, and radio apps. A 16G Nano is a joke.

Oh lordy. Why can't those who don't see the point of an iPod Touch just be happy that those that do are could be getting a new product! Its not going to affect you in any way, shape or form.

I have the exact same setup as you, Moto X and iPod Touch 5! I like to iPod Touch for iTunes music synching and a few apps that are better than the Android version. Although I'll probably move back to iPhone this fall when the 6S comes out. What I really want is an updated Nano with 128G, wifi, bluetooth, and internet music apps. I need something really portable for exercise and outdoor work.

Agreed. Variety is the spice of life!

Certainly smartwatches do what the Shuffle does, and more. Afterall, the Shuffle is a specialized single-purpose device and smartwatches are a convergence of many functions. However, I don't think you appreciate just how much price factors into the decision to buy a Shuffle. At $50, it's a no-brainer for many applications. There are lots of casual sports that are fun to do with music, but where fitness tracking is useless or unnecessary, and most participants wouldn't be willing to spend more than $50 on a gadget for it.

I appreciate your point... I really do (I own a Shuffle). But ask yourself this... Is Apple really a brand that's interested in $50,- customers at the end of the day?....

I'm not saying they're not... but... Apple's always had an eye for a great profit percentage on it's products... And they've been criticized for the moments and products in which they lost that.... And they don't sell that much below $100,-

I don't share your view. In my opinion, Apple will move a bit more quickly than usual to obsolete iOS devices which do not support Apple Pay. Encouraging the adoption of Apple Pay has to be among Apple's highest priorities, if not the highest priority, with regard to iOS devices.

I believe Apple Pay is the number one motivation for Apple to release a new iPod Touch.

This doesn't apply to the 5 or 5c as they both support Apple Pay through the Apple Watch. Not to mention the 5s.

I think Apple is interested profit. The Shuffle is likely a high-margin product - meaning they make a great profit percentage as you put it. Afterall, it's component is likely low, they're simple and mass produced, and they're light, so likely assembly and deliver costs are low too.

Additionally, low cost products are often critical to get customers in and to have an opportunity to upsell them. While I doubt anyone has ever upsold an iPad from a Shuffle - an upsell to an iPod Nano is possible, and it gets customers in the door and walking past the iPhones.

I want one with a GPS radio that can be used as a bicycle computer for long rides. Don't want to have to drain my iPhone battery and it would be a helluva sight better than the Garmin.

Why in all threads about the future of iPod touch, there's always a sheep who suggests an iPhone?

Guys, please! Wanting a Touch doesn't mean that we're poor. We don't need an iPhone!!!!!

I would not be surprised the new iPod touch looks like a reduced-size iPhone 6 (designed around a 4" display), but with the A7 system on a chip (SoC) and up to 128 GB of local storage. This essentially becomes the true successor to the iPod classic. I'd buy a 128 GB model so I could put most of my music collection on the player.

You can call them "sheep" but that is what Apple would prefer you do.

Yet a lot of people who were iPod Touch customers are either buying second hand iPhones or other devices thus = lost profit for Apple.

Shoving an A8 processor in the current Touch 5 case would not cost much.

I assume the forthcoming Beats service was the reason for the ipod touch 6 last year delay....makes sense.

It would be interesting if Apple put a superior audio chip in the iPod line. Meaning *some* iPhone users could potentially be persuaded that it might be good to own and carry both an iPhone and iPod again.

I've yet to meet a child with an iPod Touch, and I work in a school.

Agreed that I don't see a lot of kids with an iPod touch... but I'm not sure what that indicates. I typically see them with iPads or mom/dad's iPhone. But, it does make sense that IF you were going to get your kids their own device, it would most likely be an iPad or an iPod touch. No one in their right mind is going to get their younger kids an iPhone either.

And, I'd have to say that while I don't routinely ask people if their iPhones are on plans, I've never actually met or heard of anyone with an iPhone not on a plan. Where is this common?

Well, that and even if we are poor, does that mean we shouldn't have an Apple product? Such an attitude seems to be trading on the myth that Apple is about fashion rather than just plain smart use of your hard earned money.

Or, maybe we're making good money and just have better things to fund or spend it on than making the already bloated telcos richer. (i.e.: I don't mind paying Apple because they've always done a great job for me... but I do mind sending any more money to the telcos than I have to, as they've just screwed me over again and again.)

How does this thing do it?

"Accurate to 2.5m (9 ft) up to 60,000 ft and 1000 mph... Quickly acquires satellite lock without cell tower assistance. Hot start time as quick as 2 seconds."

Pulls the almanac down every four hours at 12 minutes a time.
They don't give you the cold start time.

There are more responses to this iPod touch post then there are for many of the Apple watch posts. Proof positive that there IS indeed an interest for the iPod touch. It hasn't been updated in like 3 years. Of course sales are down.

People are waiting.

I hope the iPod touch 6 comes in a 4.7" & 5.5" sizes as rumored. That'd be cool. They could market the 4.7" as the new iPod touch and the 5.5" as an iPad nano.

Some people here can't understand why anyone would want one when there is the iPhone. But I would argue that there are many people who don't want the price or the contract prisons of a smartphone.

I send & receive calls on my iPod touch 5 all the time. I also have an iPad mini with a grandfathered unlimited data plan from att.

I would love if apple would give the 5.5" iPod touch 6 a cellular card slot like the iPads. Probably won't happen, but that'd be awesome.

Other than that, I'm hoping for a much improved camera on the iPod touch. I use my current touch as my main camera when traveling.

I'm more excited about this than the Apple watch.

Hoping for Sanity

A release with only 128GB of storage would be a major disappointment.

I know Apple wants everyone to buy into their $treaming vision of the future, but plenty of us (a) travel, (b) use our devices in non-wifi areas, and (c) listen/watch media that is not offered via streaming, and (d) don't feel like paying for content we already own. Apple killed the Classic...its replacement should at least live up to the same specs (160GB and that was years ago, so 256GB for $300ish would be an acceptable target).

Oh, and it'd be nice if iOS finally caught up to all the features the Classic has that the Touch still is missing. For example, video playlists.

The main trend in audio players now is that since music can be listened from smartphones now, is the shift to the high res music aka audio HD.

Audio HD - t it is generally used to describe audio signals with bandwidth and/or dynamic range greater than that of Compact Disc Digital Audio (CD-DA).[2] This includes pulse-code modulation (PCM) encoded audio with sampling rates greater than 44100 Hz and with bit-depths greater than 16,[2] or their equivalents using other encoding techniques such as pulse-density modulation (PDM).[3]

High-resolution audio file formats include FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF and DSD, the format used by Super Audio Compact Discs (SACD). (wikipedia).

One will need a dedicated player for that.
pSNYNA-HAPS1~B_main_v500.png

which costs 999 dollars and its portable players are expensive.

This players costs 349 dollars

So maybe iPod is being evaluated as
two possible choices:

1. cheaper normal iPod
2. higher priced HD audio iPod specializing in Apple Lossless (HD audio).

They don't give you the cold start time.

So, does that mean the iPhone without cellular would give similar accuracy and speed? (like, say you had the map localized on the phone... would the iPhone do fine for hiking or driving directions without cellular?)

Exactly! If there were new models available, I don't know what the sales figures would be, but they'd be a LOT more.

I'm kind of thinking (based on one of the comments about Beats streaming) that maybe Apple doesn't even quite get it with the iPod touch anymore. I think maybe because it's called an 'iPod' their focus is on the traditional market for the iPod series. While I'm sure people do use it that way, I bet a lot more use it as a smartphone without the cellular/contract. For example, the primary purposes for mine are podcasts and Kindle book reading.

re: Watch - same here. I'm still trying to figure out what the excitement is all about. I suppose if someone gave me one, I'd enjoy playing with it for a bit... but I can't really think of much use for one, especially not enough to get me to pay for it.
