I Love Lucy? Andy Griffith? The Honeymooners?

Why the heck would Apple tout this device for video, when it does not have the proper aspect ratio for normal video?

Hey - if black and white sitcoms were standard fodder, the old-school aspect ratio would be good enough. But trying to shoot/edit/view normal video on a device which uses an obsolete 20th-century aspect ratio is questionable at best.

Fail.

Exactly. It was perfect for the Lights, Camera, Action theme of the show.

Best Oscars in a long, long, time IMO. Seth simply makes fun at what we say in our little "Circles of People".

Boobs Baby, Boobs!!!!

Going by that logic - perhaps the ad would have been better if it was a single voice and not a group.

Further - since Apple has used celebs in the past - why not use one here. Why not Scorsese or Spielberg or whoever.

The ad itself isn't bad. I find it hard to believe that anyone actually thinks the actual audio of the shouting of lights, camera, action is "good" though.

I wonder if all the people who hate these new Apple commercials would rather watch another Big Pharma ad for the latest, greatest miracle drug and its laundry list of side effects.

So long as Apple does not stoop to the level of Big Pharma, nobody has any right to complain about anything.

Sinking to the level of Monsanto is perfectly OK, so long as Apple says a half-step above Big Pharma.

The second it came on I immediately thought of Sesame Street. Not sure if that's where they were going, but I think that's where it went.

Hey Apple! Hey! Hey Apple! Apple, Apple, hey! Hey Apple!
People make movies on Mac Pros, not iPads! ;)

Fewer and fewer use the Mac Pro for anything. Already, the people using Mac Pros are using outdated computers. Soon, people using Mac Pros will be using antiques.

That's precisely why these ads are good other than the sound. The problem is that the sound design is jarring enough for enough people that it cancels out the good of the visual design.

See I disagree. I think the sounds are fun, and liven up the ad.

Who cares whether the ipad can do these things out of the box or not? Can a Windows PC run Photoshop out of the box? And not everything they show in these ads are apps you have to pay for.

Who cares? What a dumb question. Potential buyers care and those are the ones who still don't know an iPad exists.

And no a Windows PC isn't packed with Photoshop. But here's the point you are missing - it's not shown in advertisements doing that is it?

Neither for that matter are iMacs or Macbooks.

-What!

bbubububububububububububububum

-The!

bbubububububububububububububum

-Hell?!

HAHAH. I came here post this exact thing with "Shout, Scream, Annoyed." :D

Apple, please make these stop.

Fail...

The words are "Lights," "Camera," "Action."

Yes I know you were trying to make a point, but it didn't work.

I seriously laugh at those who say these ads are annoying and loud. Get a grip people, it's a 30 second ad and they 'yell' every 10 seconds for .5 second. Not that bad people. Maybe some are on their computers too much and the slightest noise hurts their ear drums. :( Hope none you live the big city, you might hear a car honk or someone sneeze in your home. :p

His 38 upboats disagree with you. ;)

To anyone who says these new ads are any good:

Watch this, then watch the new Apple ads.

Watch this, and again watch the new Apple ads.

The new Apple ads are incredibly stale. It used to be about being a better and cooler product then the competition. So I can watch videos on iPad, view pictures and take pictures? Same as everyone else? Ok, I guess that's cool still, right?

To anyone who says that the old Mac ads were any good:

Why do they have to yell out the words?? It would be so much better if it was just the text and background music...

Because folks tend to get up during commercials to grab a beer etc and the 'annoying' words might get them to look

----------

Maybe so, but for a company that has one of the best advertising teams in the world, Apple shouldn't be airing any ads that are even remotely annoying. And these are certainly more than just remotely...

Based on your opinion of what is annoying of course. And they must consult you about everything they design to make sure it is how you would do it.

Eventually people will get sick of seeing Samsung commercials every 5 seconds.

I have heard the opinion that ads do not have much effect upon buying decisions unless and until that happens. That is why companies have a blitz of advertising for many weeks, rather than doing a lower-frequency campaign spread out across a period of many months.

Who cares whether the ipad can do these things out of the box or not?

The people who buy an iPad in order to do those things care very much.

Yes indeed. The people who are the targets of the ad care very, very much.

I agree. Product placements are stupid and base, only perpetrated by the desperate and needy. ...

There's product placement and then there's product call outs. Having the camera pulled back to show they were video chatting on a Samsung (placement) bad enough. Flat saying the kids were getting galaxy tabs (callout) too much.

On most shows they just show it without fuss or crazy moves to show screens, logos etc. that's not annoying generally. It's the name dropping call out that is annoying.

Apple products appeared in 891 TV shows in 2011 alone. According to Brandchannel, iDevices were in 40 percent of movie box office hits.

...and so on. SHAMELESS I tell ya!

Ah, gotta love this place. MR is SUPPOSE TO BE a place for Apple enthusiasts. The moment I rant about another company the two of you have to throw your usual fire at Apple. Give it rest. There are "I hate Apple forums" I'm sure. You two should join them.

Neither of you are even in the ballpark of what I was talking about. Many companies do product placement. That's typical. On the red carpet Samsung paid the academy to force the interviewers to hold the Samsung Galaxy Note and Tablets in their hands and recite brand name, model and how they were using it, OVER AND OVER for several hours on a live show. Pathetic.

The real irony with these ads is that the iPad can't do many of the things shown out of the box. You have to pay extra for third party software.

It's like advertising an iMac running Photoshop.

Of course these ads are typical for a product in the stale part of it's lifespan. When the hardware cannot sell itself then marketing has to create ways to make it look an attractive proposition. And that usually means software.

The idea is to show the iOS ecosystem, and how well it pairs with the hardware. Regardless of how the ads work from an artistic standpoint, I think that's the point we're supposed to come away with. It's showing off the limitless potential of Apple's devices.

It's called sponsorship. Happens all the time. I'm pretty sure you just noticed this more because it was a high profile event and it was Samsung.

Exactly my point! At least somebody gets it..the resident Apple haters here are conveniently ignoring it. ;)

These minimalist 'white background' ads are looking so old now. When they tried to break away from it, with the dire Genius ads, it all went horribly wrong.

That's the trouble with minimalism - once you've decided 'full minimal' is way to go it's hard to think your way out of that Cul-de-sac. It's like modernist architecture, which spawned thousands of bland boxy buildings.

I work in the industry and I'll call out any director I work with that gets too over the top with the product schtick. As I told one of them, if it makes an industry worker nauseous it will do the same or worse to the viewers.

It wasn't that it was Samsung, or Honda or whomever.

It is a high profile event and supposed to be a classy one and any product callouts, even if it had been for Apple stuff, was tacky and jarring. The google one was the worst in my opinion.

These ads are meant to show Apple's app advantage except I don't think they're very effective; showing apps that aren't available for Android for a split second doesn't truly communicate their huge apps advantage.

Amazon did a great job of illustrating how the Kindle Fire HD is just as good as an iPad but at a fraction of the cost. Even though that's not true, it's hard hitting and effective, and I'm sure a lot of consumers will bite.

I know it's off topic but was that the most boring Oscars ever or what. Seth McFarlane wasn't remotely funny and the results were all totally predicable. The best bit was when Capt Kirk from Star Trek came on.

I even had to keep changing the channel when the acceptance speeches were on because they were so dull - thanks to all the people who might give me another job in the future and thanks to my mom, dad, kids, aunties and uncles, etc, etc. Can't any of them say something original, amusing or thoughtful.

That's the last time I watch that crap.
