This iWatch has been a topic of conversation so long that it has inspired imaginations, swelled aspirations, and become passé. It has gone through an entire product cycle without ever being released.

Text book definition of vaporware.

None of the people, or organizations, I've worked for cared more about where you bought your clothes, or what type of watch you had on your wrist, than they cared about the quality of your work.

This is so correct. I drive a beater to work because I don't like putting miles or gas in my newer truck. My coworker was shocked that I had such a vehicle when she came over to my house. I don't like bragging or showing off and if you don't like me for me you can go pound sand. I only buy stuff because I want it; not to show off to my friends or coworkers. And like you I let the quality of my work speak for me.
I care more about the functionality and price than the bling factor of this watch.

I think it's clear that nobody knows what the 'iWatch' is actually going to be.

The only thing to deduce from all the activity is that:
- Apple is working on some sort of wrist-worn accessory or device.
- It's going to have sensors that link to the Health app.
- It's going to be announced near the end of the year or the start of next year.

We don't actually know if it will have multiple screen sizes, it may not have a screen at all.

Personally, I think this is going to be a fashion accessory first, and a device second. It's going to be something people want to wear because it will look cool, and it will have some added functionality.

It will spark of new class of device, a 'light touch' product that doesn't require the user's undivided attention.

I would not be surprised if it doesn't actually have a screen. Do we really need yet another screen that we carry with us? What use is it to show a few words of a text message on a postage stamp sized screen?

A band that glowed different colours based on different notification types would be cool. Just a hint that there's something that may require our attention and what that may be.

Something that is always on, doesn't require charging much, and is working together with my iPhone to show me pertinent information about my health and activities.

A Siri remote for my Apple TV and other apple devices.

This is what I want, and what I suspect, that Apple is working on.

Not a miniature version of the iPhone strapped to my wrist.

Not sure why you feel the need to let everyone know about your low social status?

Most everybody thinks this is true about themselves and their organizations. But random testing shows that job candidates who are randomly selected to dress better (as in a bit closer to what the board and CxOs wear on better dressed work days) in job interviews statistically get more job offers and average higher salary offers. You might well be fooling yourself unless you or your organization has been tested in a controlled blind study.

Glad to see you base relatively expensive purchases on previous, relatively expensive purchases that were pretty pointless >_>

Neat! Tell us more about how much you spend on watches! We're fascinated.

There's really no excuse for wearing an expensive watch anymore (everything tells time these days) except for overcompensating.

Only if You purely see the watch as a device that tells time. Obviously some people see it more as jewelry and to me more or less the only men can wear.

With your logic it wouldn't make sense for anyone to wear a ring a bracelet or else because hey - they must be overcompensating.

And looking at recent hires from apple it looks to me they want to become more a fashion brand

The equivalent for women is jewelry (sparkly slave rocks), shoes (Manolo Blahnik, et.al.), handbags (Versace, et.al.), etc. That's a huge percentage of the population "overcompensating" for something.

But also a mega-billion dollar highly profitable business. Sorry that you're not interested even a small a cut.

Personally I think 1.8" is a little too big for a watch. If you make it round, this equals to about 46mm diameter. That is already a very big watch, as sizes go.

Myself, I prefer something like 41-43mm, which would make it around 1.6", anything larger looks really clunky...

Do you prefer metric or imperial or on the fence ;-)

Well it doesn't make sense to have a smart watch when you will still need a phone in your pocket for functionality . What a waste of money if you asked me except for the loyalists . :)

I'm hoping for the day when people say:

Bring on the watch phone that can link to any dumb screen...

Apple is planning to launch three versions of the iWatch in the third quarter of this year. The lineup is said to include a model with a 1.6-inch display and two models with 1.8-inch displays, with the high-end version of the larger size coming with a sapphire display cover for durability.

Again ? So let me get this, all the poor people are thin and or small and the rich ones are all big or fat ? Otherwise what's the logic here ?

the iWatch will be nothing like an iPhone or iPod.

i mean who want's to keep his wrist near his ear and then near your mouth to talk? nonsense! also using earplugs coming from your wrist? very annoying!

the iWatch will add other functionality for sports, health and movement. and maybe something for games.

an iWatch should not inform me when I receive mail or messages. I keep my iPhone constantly with me for when I receive a message. my wrist buzzing is NOT gonna help.

I wonder if it will have a gps and siri.

I still don't think it will have the word Watch in it's name.

I think it will be a band, not too dissimilar to the Nike Fuelband, FitBit etc

Also, IMO it's no coincidence that Nike no longer manufacture the FuelBand and let most of it's staff go (and they're probably working for Apple on the iBand).

Anyone out there have any ideas? Is this something that Apple could actually achieve? A hologram like projector that would enlarge the image coming from the wearable device? That's Star Trek stuff too me, but would be AWESOME if they indeed were able to deliver something like that.

Ever seen a Mirascope "hologram" toy made of two parabolic mirrors?

Same principle. But not something that'll likely fit in a watch :)

Edit: Ah. I see that sulpfiction already posted this toy up in post #92! Durned long threads.

Samsung's Gear Live is already 1.63"x1.63", but by all means keep perpetuating the myth that Samsung just builds bigger sizes to only be larger than Apple devices

I was taking the p*ss out of the people on here moaning about being "behind" because other brands make bigger devices and suddenly the screen is "too small to be able to do stuff" genuine quote I've read from someone on here.

But by all means continue to completely miss my point

This wont sell unless it looks like an acutal watch IMO. Most of us don't want to walk around with a baby smartphone screen on our wrists.

People used to say similar things about carrying cell phones and then smart phones.

Never underestimate the ability of fashion to change to meet desirable technology.

NERRRRRRD ALERT.

The nerds won long ago, when everyone started buying home computers and carrying little internet terminals :)

I personally think they'll be a range of health products and I wouldn't rule out a watch and band launching at the same time with some related first party apps.

And yet iPhone 5s is the best selling smartphone in May in 35 countries

And? Your point is...?

No one is disputing the fact, that the iPhone is selling well. But the point is, that Apple could have sold much much more iPhones keeping the competition in check. Why do you think a manufacturer like Samsung sold millions of their Galaxy S and Note series? Because of superior hardware and software? No, because mostly they are offering a screen size which doesn't exits in the iOS ecosystem.

If :apple: had offered various screen sizes early on, Samsung would have never gained the present popularity IMHO.

Mind blowing: Apple has various screen sizes for iMacs, 11", 13", 15" and early even 17" laptops, iPads in 2 sizes, iPods in different sizes, but the iPhone just one single size. And this in a time (passed PC, according to Jobs) where people compose emails on the fly, browse web in the bus, watch youtube videos in restaurants, etc.

Me thinks, that has been the biggest strategic failure of Apple in the past. They could have done better and Android would have it had much much harder to gain popularity.

My guess...

One thats just a band and one with band and screen. The sapphire choice is confused with the iphone 6. It will be a premium add-on for the phone.

+1. Apple might also debut third party medical sensors that connect to their watch/band. That way, Apple doesn't have to get FDA approval for anything they make themselves.

If :apple: had offered various screen sizes early on, Samsung would have never gained the present popularity IMHO.

Yep, at least, not in the subsidized phone countries. Outside of those, price is more of a factor.

The other big mistake was being exclusive to AT&T in the US for too long, which gave Android an almost free playing field for years on the other carriers.

I know lots of extremely-non-nerdly women who walk around wearing baby mobile display screens...

...even on their underwear. See plenty at the gym. They are addicted to their fitbits.

If someone made a device like a fitbit, but much more fashionable looking, more women might start wearing them more visibly. Say add a display screen on this. And if male sports mega-stars and CEOs on golf courses start wearing a more muscular version...

Whats everyone's opinion on what they could release for the iwatch? Will it make calls and text with out a blue tooth connection to the iphone?

I'm hoping the iWatch will be an independent device. I haven't heard or read one way or the other.

Thoughts?

I'm hoping the iWatch will be an independent device.

Current cellular mobile and wifi radio communications burn too much power for a battery small enough to fit inside a watch (unless you want to recharge it multiple times per day). So no completely independent watch-sized devices (useful ones) for this technology generation or likely the next few.
