This one... https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MMX62ZM/A/lightning-to-35mm-headphone-jack-adapter?fnode=85

£9, with 104 reviews averaging 1 star out of 5. And in any case, as has been outlined, unless it’s able to work in conjunction with both lightning to vga and lightning to hdmi adapters, it’s no help to me.

I worry that Apple don’t really use the term ”pro” any more in the way they used to: now it simply means “with newer features we will eventually bring to the cheaper models”. Which could be something useful like the Apple Pencil, or less so like losing the headphone port.
104 pissed off people, with 150-200 million installed base. Hmmm.

I didn’t see anything in your post outlining requirements for VGA or HDMI.

The question might just be, should Apple retain 15mm bezels so they can keep the built in 3.5mm jack. I’m sure it would be ok with you, but few have your niche requirement.

I miss Steve. He was smart enough to see that people did not like the idea of them removing the 3.5mm jack from the phones. Tim appears to have the attitude of, "Hey if everyone hated it then we should do that on our products as well" None of this would be going on if Steve was still running Apple.
Speak for yourself

I honestly don’t understand why people are whining about headphone jacks. They are old school and outdated. Go wireless folks and you’ll never look back!

Lightning to 3,5mm dongle is the #2 best selling Apple product of all time. Maybe they want to push it to #1.

New technology can be worse or unnecessary.
Sure, but technology will march on regardless... hopefully with an upward trajectory.

If a new model is better for 90% of the users, is it a better model? Not for the 10%. And those 10% may rant and rave for the rest of their lives about how great things were in the good old days.

One can either deal with reality or not, but technology isn’t just going to freeze at the point someone thinks it’s perfect (for them).

It’s amazing to read so many posts on how Apple messed up the iPad Pro, and how crazy it is to get rid of the headphone jack and how much people is moving to Android.....guys it’s just a RUMOR, and a pretty nonsensical one too!
Functional illiteracy reigns in this forum....

That’s not true they removed it on the iphone 7 first

The way I see it, they removed the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 to give users a whole year to accept this change, so that the controversy would have largely died down by the time the iPhone X was removed.

If you ask me, everything has been building up to the reveal of the iPhone X. You don’t want a case where you have the headphone jack on the iPhone 8 but not the X.

I wonder if someone decides to compile a list with (say) the best 100 headphones of all time (in terms of sound quality, not just comfort) we will find that most of them are WIRELESS...

Instead of doing this sort of s.hit how about increasing the 10 hours all batteries last on a single charge?

Priorities, riiiiiight? :D

This comes a change from before it went all dongles.. When we still had physical ports/connectors, there was none of this needing a dongle.

I think the idea, is "optional" vs "required." we have a hard time adjusting to

Nah I think the problem is that people are upset at Apple as whole. Something like the Mac Mini situation. People who use that as an argument that Apple has “gone away from its core values” are likely people who wouldn’t even buy the Mac Mini.

People see all of these reports and posts about how Apple has changed and is so different under Tim Cook; which means that ANY little thing that you don’t agree with gets elevated times a million.

This is a SMALL adjustment. Trust me, it’s not that big of a deal. The problem is this reality distortion field.

Yeah, that might not be your intent but it's definitely coming off that way. I've got specific use cases where using the adapter won't work for me. Just because the adapter will solve the problem for you, doesn't necessarily mean it solves it for all use cases.

I’m not even talking about me specifically. Did you see the original post? Dude said that he doesn’t want to be forced to buy Bluetooth earphones/headphones and made NO mention of the adapter. Basically acting as if the adapter doesn’t exist.

The adapter, for that person WOULD solve the problem. Yet them and others act as if they’re being forced into doing things they don’t want to.

I'd be stunned if the smartkeyboardthingy only worked in Portrait mode.
How would one connect their lightning headphones? How would one charge it at the same time? Will the new keyboards have a lightning connector on it? Mmm... nah. it ain't happening. It will be portrait mode, as others have stated there are rumours that say Apple will get FaceID to work in both orientations.

I'm keen to see if the physical size reduction to these new iPads is true. That is some stellar work and will make a significant difference for a portable device if so.

Headphone jack=car wheels beautifully works, no issues! No headache! Simple life! It works!

First the headphone jack! Second the lighting connector, then the internal memory!= dumb iPad EVERTHING in the Rip off iCloud important to us then we will have to pay though the nose to pay for it! Otherwise you can go screw your self for your data = iPad a paperweight!

That’s Apples roadmap! Thin light dumb devices cheaper for Apple shaving off ports and aluminium for profit then charge us through iCloud to access it!

I like said headphone jack! Vinyl, memory, own storage ya know physical things!! not wireless cloud based guff!! Or iTunes in the cloud, headphone jack gone, non upgradable macs!

For me...again, FOR ME...the Apple AirPods have ended my need for the headphone jack. I use them with my iPhone, MacBook, and my current iPad Pro. I do have a set of earbuds with which I use the adapter at night. I have given away all my other headphones requiring a jack. I really appreciate the AirPods, and even though they are expensive, I've still saved money that I was spending purchasing headphones that usually die in a year or less. Again, just my opinion, which I'm sure will piss people off around here.

Sorry, 1.4 centuries then... happy now ? ;j

Much mo' bettah. And even though that connector is as old as the hills does not mean it's obsolete, or at least not everywhere. Not yet.

I've often been an early adopter of Apple's new stuff but have been balking lately over either having to buy a peripheral (say an external portable optical drive) or a dongle just to keep up the pace that Apple has decided to adopt for shoving us into the next great adventure we hadn't realized we need to go on.

Sure there's "a dongle for that" if I don't want AirPods (yet)... there's adapters for everything now, it's long since become a necessity. It's not like I don't know from gizmos to make new stuff work with old stuff, or vice versa... I just get tired of having to keep track of more and more of them.

I thought back in 2002 or so that all that sort of making-do would soon become a thing of the past and we'd settle into new standards for this, that and the other thing and be done with it. On re-thinking that I realize I was out of my mind to imagine there could or should be roadblocks on human inventiveness... :)

Still...

[pulls ancient and serviceable iPod 2nd gen nano out of little basket of five of them on top the microwave and ambles out to the ancient car, popping an FM transmitter into the bottom of the thing since the car only has a radio and a cassettte player  ]

Same here.. as a consumer in this instance, the AirPods have been absolutely fantastic and have fulfilled my needs for headphones.

I can see the other side of the coin though, because it's still a port that is used for more than just headphone usage. The headphone jack is far more important on Macs. On mobile devices the loss of the headphone jack isn't that big in my opinion, not many people are using that port for more than just headphones.

Vertical only FaceID isn’t ideal for a device that’s meant to be used either way.

Why didn’t they just add flood illuminator and IR blaster on the side to enable horizontal unlock.

2 sets of each and then one dot projector since it’s orientation agnostic.

When I use my iPad with smart keyboard, it’s always horizontal from the get-go.

It’s an annoyance for iPhone but a huge deal breaker for the iPad if rumors are true.

Granted, but they want people to start using their Airpods... This is probably why their not including the dingle in the box and removing it from iPad in addition.

Just as long they don't do this to the Mac as well, i'll be happy. And they could, because you only need Bluetooth for Airpods

The future is changing....perhaps for the worse.

To be honest, with Facebook coming out ages ago, destroying the real social life and privacy, with all the problems in the Middle East and USA trying make sure Russia will go to world war 3, I find the removal of headphone jack being a minor inconvenience.

But, as of heavy GarageBand user, I will, in a matter of time, need a dongle. Which I will attach to my Senheisser 1x and keep it there. The drama is over. GarageBand with AirPods just doesn’t work as the latency is too severe to even use an instrument.

I agree with you, they should keep the jack on computer, if there is no better alternative immediately to our disposition.

The whole camera based authentication thing is a stupid gimmick, both on Android and iOs. Fingerprint authentication was a step forward and made day to day use of these devices a breeze. At least in the Android ecosystem if you don't like something there are always alternatives, and despite all the nonsense we read on these forums, Androids are pretty nice to use - it doesn't take long to get used to them.
