This would be complete nonsense if Apple neutered the iPad like this. What's a computer? - Well I'm pretty sure it has a headphone jack on it!! I haven't upgraded my iPhone past the 6S solely because the headphone jack is far more useful to me than a bunch of stupid Animoji and camera improvements. I was considering having to go the iPad Pro route once my iPhone gets so long in the tooth that I need to upgrade. But this decision would make me re consider.

I'm in the same boat. If Apple decides to remove the headphone jack from the next iPhone SE I will be looking elsewhere. I have high end headphones that require a 3.5mm jack and I would rather keep those then stay in a failing eco system...

Removing the headphone jack makes no sense, since I have top notch wired headphones, which I use with my iMac, my current iPad Pro, and my iPhone 6s+ that still has a headphone jack. You are welcome to use your bluetooth headphones with any Apple products that also sport the headphone jack. Removing the jack does not inconvenience you; it does for many people. After dropping the jack from the phones, I sort of guessed the iPad was the next to be neutered, so bought the current iPad Pro. Likely won't buy another. BTW, I never use bluetooth, and if they ever removed bluetooth I wouldn't be affected; however, I don't begrudge those who do use it, and wouldn't cheer the company if they removed bluetooth. Apple is basically pushing quite a few long time customers away through bogus premature removal of jacks and ports, by neutering the MBP line, by failing to update the Mac Pro, and by lowering the quality of customer support. It's what they apparently want; it's working.

It’s called moving forward. Yes there are people who still use it but there were still people who used the floppy drive when Steve Jobs removed that, or the DVD drive on Mac’s when that was removed. Apple aims for the masses, like I’ve said in another post you can’t please everyone.

By the way Apple are updating the Mac Pro, it’s a completely new design for and a 2019 thing. As for customer support I don’t know what company you’re talking about because I’ve always had excellent customer service with Apple. As for the MacBook Pro’s they just got a big update.

Good luck with that other companies are following suit and also removing the headphone jack.

Where your argument fails is that there was a clear superior technology replacement. CDs are much better than floppy disks, streaming is much better than optical. BUT, Bluetooth is not better than the headphone jack at the moment. The audio quality is worse, wireless headphone tech is more expensive, it drains the battery, and Bluetooth is a changing standard with all kinds of quirks between different hardware manufacturers. Give me Bluetooth tech that has the same quality of audio and at the same price as the standard headphones that Apple used to hand out. Then we’ll talk.

You're a bit confused about some of the technology it seems. First off, the quality of wireless depends on the quality of the speaker. My B and H wireless have beautiful sound. Second, wireless are now well over half of the revenue in headphone sales, but wireless is also available at all price points. Third, you don't have to switch to wireless! As now hundreds of millions of people are doing, you can simply use either a lightning equipped headphone (Apple gives them to you with your purchase) or you can use any legacy WIRED headphone you want simply by taking two seconds to attach the free adapter they send you and never think about it again your entire life.

Here's how I see it.

The new UI in iOS 12 hints at the notch coming to the iPad (since it moves the time from the middle to the left. A notch on the screen really only makes sense if there is no bezel (or very thin bezels). Thin bezels necessitate the removal of the headphone jack.

I still think Face ID working only in vertical is wrong though. It will definitely have to support both orientations if it is going to work properly on the iPad, which can be used in either setting.

That said, I find it funny that in the Mac thread, virtually everyone and their mother was claiming that the iPad was a toy incapable of serious work. Then here, everyone is claiming that the removal of the headphone jack will ruin their workflows.

So which is which now? Is the iPad capable of legitimate serious productivity or not? Or is this just another case of moving the goalposts to whichever best suits your argument at any one point?

I think few of these predictions will come true. If there is Face ID, it will work regardless of orientation. A narrower keyboard to accomo
I miss Steve. He was smart enough to see that people did not like the idea of them removing the 3.5mm jack from the phones. Tim appears to have the attitude of, "Hey if everyone hated it then we should do that on our products as well" None of this would be going on if Steve was still running Apple.
Right. There wouldn’t even be iPad Pros for you to complain about either as he favoured a specific screen size.

Surely you must be kidding. I can think of nothing more Steve Jobs-like than Apple pushing ports and interfaces off of a cliff to their early demise. That is totally a Steve Jobs thing to do. If Steve had never returned to Apple and someone else led Apple to their current position, we would still have 3.5mm jacks on everything and USB-A ports on all laptops. We might even still have DVD drives in some models of Apple laptops.
[doublepost=1532827670][/doublepost]

Tell that to an interface designer. It's all relative.
If Steve had never returned to Apple, Apple wouldn’t exist. But I agree with you otherwise. Steve was great, but I can hardly believe that 7 years after his death people are still not moving on. Apple is the new Disney. Wildly successful, but everything is still “what would Steve do?” As if anyone could know. This is also the same guy that brought us the hockey puck mouse and MobileMe. Not infallible. But now all we remember is the highlight reel.

Don’t kid yourself. Steve was all for adopting new standards and removing ports for the sake of aesthetics and form.

It’s possible the 3.5mm jack would have been removed SOONER under Jobs. The difference is the fanboys would have accepted this change because Steve would have sold them on it.

But why?

Seriously. I can at least pretend that the removal of the 3.5 jack from the iPhone was because "space constraints" and "water resistance", but on a 10" tablet? Come on now.

Despite what some would have you believe, 3.5mm is not "outdated" or "legacy". Its an old standard yes, but one thats endured the test of time because, to use Apples own slogan, "It just works". No worrying about how much charge your BT headphones have, no need to pair or sync your headphones, no need for a dongle to use your existing headphones, no potential worry about compatibility. You plug the wire into the jack, and hey you got audio going to your ears. Simplicity wins.
3.5mm is outdated. Sorry but it is. It is analogue and digital standards have been around since the 80s. The lighting port offers a purely digital signal which suffers none of the potential signal loss in analogue. Anyone concerned about sound quality would never advocate for analogue. The nature of the technology is inferior.

Vertical only FaceID isn’t ideal for a device that’s meant to be used either way.

Why didn’t they just add flood illuminator and IR blaster on the side to enable horizontal unlock.

2 sets of each and then one dot projector since it’s orientation agnostic.

When I use my iPad with smart keyboard, it’s always horizontal from the get-go.

It’s an annoyance for iPhone but a huge deal breaker for the iPad if rumors are true.
It’s a RUMOUR not FACT. Come on. Remember the “home button under the glass” bs at this time last year? There is no chance the iPad will have an unlock system that doesn’t accommodate different orientations. Zero chance.

This would be a terrible decision on Apple’s part.

I have heard that before it was removed from the iPhone.
That's exactly what it was said (some people have a short memory to remember it)
Would not give a flying monkey myslelf.
Have not used wired one for a year and a half and there is no way I will go back to wires.
But I feel for the audiophiles :)

Removing the headphone jack makes sense. But moving the smart connector to the bottom would incredibly dumb. Portrait displays are pretty much only useful on phones.

Seriously? Steve removed the floppy drive and all legacy ports on the first iMac - all it had was a CD/DVD drive and a couple of USB ports. People were furious at first...and then low and behold the entire industry moved in the same direction. The MacBook Air removes the optical drive, and again many were screaming - in particular that Apple was chasing thinness over usability (sound familiar?)...and just as before, the industry has largely moved to removing the optical drive from laptops.

Take off your rose colored glasses. Tim Cook is far from perfect, but neither was Jobs. Apparently the reality distortion field he created lives on even after his death.

But the thing is floppy disk were dying when apple removed it. And the same when they decided to remove the CD rom drive.

Wired headphones are still widely used.

Good, there’s no need for it. Wireless has been the norm for a while now. Besides charging, the last time I plugged anything into my phone (never in an iPad) was the iPhone 5. Time to move on everyone.

Edit: I don’t buy the second part though. Face ID will have to work in landscape.
You do realize that it’s not just about headphones, right? Square payment system, audio out for soundboard use and many other uses that Bluetooth just does not work for.

There you have it.
It fascinates me how short some peoples memory is.
This is exactly why I love Apple. They see potential and they are not afraid to make a change. They move on to the next stage, regardless of what customers think. Obviously people do hate changes, If it was for people we would still be using floppy, cd drive and what not, Every time these old tech were removed customers got outraged. Nothing different here with the 3.5mm jack. I say, go for it Apple, just do it.
That being said, FaceId not working on landscape orientation and now the vertical smart keyboard to me make absolutely no sense and I am not sure what Apple is thinking. It does seem like a terrible move but I would be glad to be proven wrong and there could be something we don't know. I rarely use my iPad on vertical mode, unless I am browsing something on the internet.

On the side note, amazes me how many people have been adapted to using the AirPods. I don't know a single person or I have not see/read a single review of a person who is not happy with them.

Bring it on, the only time I use headphones with my iPad Pro is watching videos in bed and I use my AirPods, I think my headphone port only serves as a dust collector!

Analogue audio ports are not outdated. Audiophile headphones are wired because of zero latency. The only way to out-date 3.5mm is through powered, wired digital headsets through, for example, the USB port. Once you see those in the supermarket and corner store, then we can discuss how 3.5mm is outdated.

Apple's upcoming iPad Pro models will feature slightly smaller bodies, a relocated Smart Connector, and no headphone jack, according to information shared by Japanese site Mac Otakara.

Citing supply chain sources, Mac Otakara says the new 10.5-inch iPad Pro will measure in at 247.5mm tall, 178.7mm wide, and 6mm, compared to the current size of 250.6mm x 174.1mm x 6.1mm. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is said to measure 280mm tall, 215mm wide, and 6.4mm thick, compared to the current measurements of 305.7mm x 220.6mm x 6.9mm.

These dimensions line up with rumors suggesting Apple plans to introduce a full redesign with the 2018 iPad Pro models, slimming down the bezels much like it did with the iPhone X. Though smaller in size, the new iPads will feature larger displays thanks to the bezel reduction. The new iPad Pros are not expected to feature a Home button, and according to previous rumors, will include a TrueDepth camera system for Face ID.

Mac Otakara also suggests that the 2018 iPad Pro models will not feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, with Apple opting to eliminate it.

iPhones have not had a headphone jack since it was removed in the iPhone 7, and Apple has instead relied on Bluetooth devices like the AirPods along with Lightning-based headphones. Apple is not expected to ship the new iPad Pro models with a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter, which would be in line with analyst predictions suggesting that adapter will not come with the 2018 iPhones either.

In the iPhone lineup, the headphone jack was removed for improved water resistance and to make space for internal components like a bigger battery, the Taptic Engine, and the rear camera system. It is not clear if Apple is facing the same space constraints in the iPad Pro with the introduction of the TrueDepth camera system or if this is a move to align iPad and iPhone features.

A portion of Mac Otakara's report says that Apple will use a "diamond cut" for both the front and the back of the new iPad Pro models, which seems to mean that the tablets could have a design that's similar the iPhone SE with beveled edges.

The Smart Connector on the iPads has reportedly been relocated from the side to the bottom near the Lightning port, which may require a new vertically oriented Smart Keyboard. It's not clear how a vertical Smart Keyboard would work, as it would likely be unstable in that orientation, especially for the larger iPad Pro.

Apple is said to be making this change because Face ID will work only when the iPad Pro is in a vertical orientation, with Mac Otakara saying that it is "impossible to release the lock with the main unit turned sideways." Previous information from Mac Otakara suggested Apple was working on horizontal Face ID for the iPad Pro, and hints of such a feature were discovered in iOS 12.

In addition to these changes to the iPad Pro, Mac Otakara also shared a bit of information on the rumored 6.1-inch low-cost iPhone. Confirming previous rumors, the site says the device will use a "Full Active" LCD display sourced from Japan Display. Full Active panels allow Apple to slim down the bezels of the LCD iPhone, bringing it in line with the two OLED devices.

6-1-inch-iphone-glass-800x450.jpg

Possible front glass panels for the 2018 iPhones, with 6.1-inch model in middle
Mac Otakara's sources have also echoed previous reports pointing towards production difficulties for the 6.1-inch iPhone. When production on the phone started this month, Apple was reportedly seeing a 1 percent completion rate, suggesting a delayed November launch for the device.

Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty made a similar prediction earlier this week, suggesting issues with "LED backlight leakage" could lead to a one month delay in production. Huberty's information indicated the delay had originally been six weeks, so it's possible Mac Otakara is working with older data. Other sources, such as Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, are not expecting launch delays, so it's unclear what's going on with the 6.1-inch iPhone at this time.

Mac Otakara has a somewhat mixed track record when it comes to rumors, sometimes sharing information that's spot on and sometimes missing the mark. For that reason, though this information is quite specific, these new details should be viewed with some skepticism until confirmed by secondary sources.

I sold my iPP 10.5” and am ready for the new iPad. I truly hope Apple releases this rumored iPad this September... unrealistic hop is: they keep the bezel design and smart connector on the side so maybe I can still use the expensive smart covers I bought for the 10.5”, lol.

Kallum.

For me...again, FOR ME...the Apple AirPods have ended my need for the headphone jack. I use them with my iPhone, MacBook, and my current iPad Pro. I do have a set of earbuds with which I use the adapter at night. I have given away all my other headphones requiring a jack. I really appreciate the AirPods, and even though they are expensive, I've still saved money that I was spending purchasing headphones that usually die in a year or less. Again, just my opinion, which I'm sure will piss people off around here.
Yeah but not everyone wants to buy AirPods, my girlfriend and I both have them. But that doesn’t mean everyone else wants to drop $170 on them. Especially after giving $1000+ for an iPhone. They should come in the box for that price.

So which is which now? Is the iPad capable of legitimate serious productivity or not? Or is this just another case of moving the goalposts to whichever best suits your argument at any one point?

This, I remember when the iPad Pro first came out with the pencil and it’s Smart Keyboard, people were saying how it wouldn’t be any good for productivity, some people are still saying that yet in another thread they want to mention how removing the headphone jack will disturb people’s video editing, photoshop work and so on. So are we finally at a stage where people are saying the iPad Pro CAN be used for productivity?

Personally I love the iPad Pro, I use it for drawing, note taking and so on, I do still love to use a Mac tho because I enjoy MacOS and I find typing on the Mac keyboard is just great.

Not sure I agree. He removed the floppy drive. RS-232 serial ports; both well before the PC industry moved on. With Bluetooth and Lightning, I haven't used a corded headphone in three years. Its time to go.

The most important thing using the wired audiophile headphones is that you can use any DAC/amp you want to. And usually you want to use hifi one with enough power to drive the headphones. With wireless headphones you are always stuck with the integrated amp of the headphones.
