If I am being honest, I'd still love a new laptop with the Ethernet jack, HDMI, a 4kBlu-Ray drive, Magsafe, user upgradable RAM and storage, and some USB A and C connectors. If Apple announced a laptop with those features, I don't think I could hit the order button fast enough.

I could even skip Ethernet jack and the Blu-Ray drive from that list, but the rest of that in a case that holds a decent keyboard -> Shut up and take my money.

I could be ok without those two either, and would still order it immediately. But I do occasionally use the ethernet port and still prefer to buy my music on CD's so it would be a plus to at least be able to rip those directly to my laptop. Hell I'd like it if the firewire 400 port would come back. Then I could plug my old ProTools rack in without an adapter too, but I do understand why some ports that are actually legacy are dropped. I think USB C will be great when it actually is everywhere, but until then having it be the only option is just a pain in the ass.

Yeah well I also rip an occasional CD or a DVD for my Plex installation, but for that I have an external Samsung DVD drive which seems to work just fine provided that you have USB-A ports, preferably without dongles.

I miss Steve. He was smart enough to see that people did not like the idea of them removing the 3.5mm jack from the phones. Tim appears to have the attitude of, "Hey if everyone hated it then we should do that on our products as well" None of this would be going on if Steve was still running Apple.

I miss him too. :(

Here you go:

Belkin 3.5mm Audio + Charge Rockstar

https://store.apple.com/uk/xc/product/HLJV2ZM/A

Gee I wonder why the Apple Store app the link originally redirected me to doesn't show the reviews section. Checked the web version and it's one star only for this and the dual-Lightning version I have. I would actually be kind enough to award it maybe 2,5 stars as I've had for maybe a year now and it hasn't broken yet, but issues are too frequent to warrant a better grade at that price.

This sort of logic is just stupid. The QWERTY keyboard is old, so we should get rid of it, after all we can use Siri instead.

I am thinking more a glass surface which morphs depending on the nature of the workflow, replete with haptic feedback.

In short, the iPad virtual keyboard.

In the iPad I do not see the valid reasons. My understanding from seeing the inside of the iPad promos that there is hollow space, and that the design of the speakers prevents the space where the headphone port from being utilised anyway.

You assume the headphone jack would be removed solely to free up space.

I suspect it will be done to enable the bezelless, notched design of the iPhone X.

Apple moving the industry towards stupid to save a few bucks... If I remember correctly, they first removed replaceable batteries, everyone followed, then sd card slots, and everyone followed, then with the MacBook, did the same with soldering everything, removing the possibility of upgrading, many had followed, and on and on... I am happy to have left the mac land (after many many years) since PC's are fairly good these days, but I do miss the OS... But these guys at the top had forgotten about the users and care too much about shareholders... I do still have some hope that they can still save apple...

Just thinking out loud...

I wonder how many here who are complaining about the loss of the iPad headphone jack, should the story's rumor be true, open their wallets and reward a competing tablet manufacturer with their currency in order keep their coveted 100+ year old headphone jack?

That would require a boatload of courage. Just don't see that happening.

That would assume that the competition, even with the headphone jack, is actually a viable alternative to the iPad.

The iPad has won the tablet wars. You know this, I know this, Apple knows this.

Courage has nothing to do with this.

Then Apple can kiss goodbye to anyone who does a significant amount of typing for work.

The rumour is that the iPad won’t shrink in size, rather the similar dimensions but with a larger screen.

I sincerely hope they don’t put a notch on the iPad Pro. And a compelely bezel-less design would be hopeless to use.

First off, the quality of wireless depends on the quality of the speaker.

Speaker quality is just one block in the chain of items that affects overall sound. You can have the best speakers in the world, but if you're playing with compressed audio, wireless interference, etc. it's not going to sound that great. You should probably go read up bluetooth compression technologies. The bottom line is that right now the bandwidth is more limited over bluetooth when compared to what you can deliver over an analog channel and this means the sound cannot approach the same level of fidelity. Even Steve Wozniak was ripping on Apple for removing the headphone jack. Do a google search for Wozniak and bluetooth and you'll see how he describes how bluetooth tech just isn't there yet.

Second, wireless are now well over half of the revenue in headphone sales, but wireless is also available at all price points.

People are buying wireless headphones because certain manufacturers have removed the headphone jack, so of course there's going to be an influx. It still doesn't fix that consumers are paying more for poorer quality. You mention "all price points"... you can buy Apple official wired headphones on amazon for $5.24, can you show me where I can buy wireless headphones for this price and with the same or better audio quality? No you can't.

Third, you don't have to switch to wireless! As now hundreds of millions of people are doing, you can simply use either a lightning equipped headphone (Apple gives them to you with your purchase) or you can use any legacy WIRED headphone you want simply by taking two seconds to attach the free adapter they send you and never think about it again your entire life.

Only certain apple products use the lightning connector, some have the 3.5 mm jack, and most other products out there have the jack as well or some other connector like USB-C. You have to take the adapter off and put it on depending on what you're connected to, and it's easy to lose. You can't even charge the phone without another dongle/adapter and listen to music through the wired headphones at the same time. Congrats to apple for shaving off a fraction of a millimeter by removing the port and then charging money for extra dongles/adapters.

This is the thing. Nothing comes close to the iPad. I woildn’t Want to try replacing my iPad with another ecosystem, however it makes every upgrade full of more and more compromises.

Here’s a thread here from the introduction of the iPod. All the same tropes as now. You could play an MR drinking game. Drink if someone says “toys”. Drink if someone adds up cost of individual parts (that are never equivalent) and declares the Apple product too expensive. Drink if someone complains about the connector. Never changes

Incredible post. At least now I know this negativity is nothing new. I guess this Apple company has been ignoring the wishes of their customers and selling junk for almost two decades - and yet, somehow they are still here. But just you wait, any time now, they are going to fail due to the choices they made. Because obviously they don’t know what people want, they are relying on brand alone - so, anytime now, no really!

I love how some of the first comments in that thread are about the Newton. Because that’s what Apple needed to make - and listen to the people who know this to be true. Also, just replace every “Steve” in that thread with “Tim” and it will feel like 2018.

On the upside, if you play the drinking game, you will be very drunk. Maybe that’s just the Scot coming out in me ;)

Haha, true.

This is one of the best comments, from the very first page:

Sounds very revolutionary to me.

hey - heres an idea Apple - rather than enter the world of gimmicks and toys, why dont you spend a little more time sorting out your pathetically expensive and crap server line up?
or are you really aiming to become a glorified consumer gimmicks firm?

Incredible. And this was 17 years ago.

this is such rubbish no way apple would make keyboard only for portrait, this is why I hate rumours

In a typing competition with this keyboard you'd take an honorable last place. Maybe that's why everyone who types/codes for living still uses regular keyboard. Even Apple is not stupid enough to abandon this one yet (although touch bar is encroaching dangerously close).
