Oh please. Courage? He’s not kicking in doors in Afghanistan. Jeez he’s changing hardware. Maybe it would be just as much “courage” to plug a freaking 2 inch lighting adaptor to his headphone. If he wants to change Operating systems for a headphone jack that’s fine. But that’s not courage. Man, the hyperbole in this thread is out of control. If you don’t want a device for lack of headphone jack, fine. But Apple will sell their countless millions of devices to those like myself that left wired headphones about 5 years ago. It was really a courageous move back then.
That door kicking in Afghanistan line actually made me laugh out loud.

Another redesign to make previous accessories useless?? I mean, I get the headphone jack part. And I would like the iPad to be ligher since I carry it around everywhere. But there must be a way to make their own accessories to work with newer versions. Like at least leave them at the same spot so we can connect the damn $200 keyboard that we only got to use for 1-2 years.

Hold it at the notch

How much do you think a headphone jack weighs? Too much to carry?

What I don’t get is So how would the smart keyboard work? Surely they won’t make you use the keyboard in portrait due to face ID?
It doesn't make sense, especially when there were rumours a little while ago of there being some coding in iOS 12 that pointed towards face ID working in both landscape and portrait. I don't think Apple would put Face ID on the iPad if it didn't work well. The keyboard only being used in portrait doesn't make sense either.

The only part I believe is that the headphone jack is going away.

Just thinking out loud...

I wonder how many here who are complaining about the loss of the iPad headphone jack, should the story's rumor be true, open their wallets and reward a competing tablet manufacturer with their currency in order keep their coveted 100+ year old headphone jack?

That would require a boatload of courage. Just don't see that happening.
I for one have stopped rewarding Apple with my money. I have the 6s and haven't upgraded because of the loss of that ubiquitous jack. I will continue to use it as long as possible. I normally would have already upgraded but not now. If the SE is updated and it has the jack I will buy it. If not I will wait until the 6s no longer functions and then I will move on. After going through two graphics cards in my iMac I won't buy those again. I continue to use my 2012 MacBook Pro. It has the I/Os I like and with the SSD drive the speed is fine for me. I won't buy a "pro" line computer that doesn't provide the versatility I want in a machine. I don't want to leave the Apple ecosystem, it is just that Apple is pushing me out.
Life is about choices. If people aren't hampered by Apple's product line developments then good for them. As for me, I can only take so much of Apple's design philosophy. When the drive for thinness over takes usability, that is where I draw the line.

If this rumour turns out to be true, then there's no doubt that Macs will be next. I've not bought a new Mac because my 2013 MacBook Pro offers me more than the current ones (nicer keyboard, Magsafe, SD card slot, HDMI out). Removing the headphone jack would be a step too far and I think I'd have no choice but to ditch Apple altogether.

Are they high? Music production is impossible with wireless headphones quality and latency. The iPad has enough space and no water resistance so what’s their ****** excuse?
Confused. Can’t people in music production just use the adapter?
[doublepost=1532931557][/doublepost]
Can't wait for Apple to abandon something you feel is a required element to a device.

In something as BIG as an iPad, you can't claim it's because of 'space' or 'waterproofing'. This is only to sell more airpods, PERIOD. Look at other posts of people giving use cases on why a 3.5mm is needed in general and more so on "laptop" type devices.

But they didn't, because the Airpods would not have sold as well if they had.

QED
Or maybe it’s because they want to move on from the headphone jack and go completely wireless. They’ve said from the beginning that was their vision.

But hey. Ignore that and go for “they just wanna sell headphones”!

I highly HIGHLY doubt it’s leaving macs anytime soon. iOS devices makes sense because they’re more casual devices that they can take risks like that with. But the MacBook Pro? Nah. It’ll stay on for at least 5 more years I’d guess. To the point where we see keynote after keynote and all say “really? It’s still there??”

I don't really have a choice on the computer side as I don't want to use another windows machine ever. Chrome OS is too limited to have as primary computer. I can use it but I need another computer with a full OS too. The iPad is much better than any other tablet.

I would hope it doesn't leave the mac. For me personally I don't care about because I use AirPods, but a lot of the music industry uses Macs and need wired headphones. So this would be a very bad move IMO.

Give it two or three years there'll be a viable new option that blows past what we have today

About this 50% in revenues:
* earbuds come free with most phones (so no separate sells needed)
* quality wired headphones last decades, wireless headphones don't (especially earbuds)

And while the quality does depend on the speakers, that's not all it depends on. Bandwidth and codec contribute too. And Apple, being cheap, does not even use the best available technology (aptX).

True. Not even aptx or aptxHD. Samsung also has a proprietary system over wireless bluetooth called UHQ audio on their level headphone range which is 24bit 96khz over Bluetooth. I use them for running. Battery lasts ages.

Newest Galaxy and Note phones play DSD and 192khz flac files out of the box also:

SAMSUNG Galaxy S9
Audio
Stereo speakers tuned by AKG
Surround sound with Dolby Atmos technology (Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus included)

Ultra High Quality Audio Playback

UHQ 32-bit & DSD support PCM: Up to 32 bits

DSD: DSD64/128

Audio playback format
MP3, M4A, 3GA, AAC, OGG, OGA, WAV, WMA, AMR, AWB, FLAC, MID, MIDI, XMF, MXMF, IMY, RTTTL, RTX, OTA, APE, DSF, DFF

Removing the headphone jack is unwise in general, and on something with a ”Pro” moniker, it is downright stupid. Quality headphones have been around for decades, and are used by professionals for reference and consumers for enjoyment for very long times. Both my two reference phones are over a decade old.
(Wireless standards however have changed almost yearly, which is a good reason to avoid exclusively wireless devices for anything where you would like or expect some longevity.) Being able to interface with decades worth of audio hardware by simply plugging it in is a real value.

I've been using my ipad pro with wired headphone via lightning connector since getting my iphone X. Because I have the lightning dongle attached for my iphone X, I don't bother removing it when using the same headphones on my ipad.

So maybe apple have some research that shows more people are using lightning headphones?

Until someone removes the headphones Jacks, wireless headphones will not progress. This is the only way for wireless headphones to progress. They are now progressing! :) finally.

Except Steve removed the additional mouse buttons, floppy drive, optical drive....etc. This is Apple's DNA - from the beginning. They are ahead of the curve which can be annoying waiting for everyone to catch up. I remember being a Mac guy in the early 90's (before the iMac) where you could buy software for Windows machines at the gas station but hardly anything for the mac. I do miss the headphone jack at times.

It's funny isn't it.

Apple are, as you say ahead of the curve, and lead the way with so many aspects of their machines.

Yet the one area their trailed all others in, going back a decade or more, way way back, is in Graphics Cards.
Back with the Apple II they were going good. the 1st MAC had monochrome Hi-Rez, and I believe others were soon there, with color, and pretty much every since Apple have been so far behind that entertainment software simply got forgotten about on them.

I'd love to have bought a mac years ago, but refused to may so much for someone on my desk with low power laptop graphics fitted.

Even now, they still can't make a machine with a current high end graphics card millions of PC users are using.

I do pray, one day, when Tim and Jony are dead and buried, someone else, who actually cares about graphics can fix this.

It's really all the fault of Steve Jobs.
If Steve Jobs loved entertainment software, he COULD have made, world leading graphics a thing, the whole world knew Apple machines for today.

Funny how one man's dislike of "entertainment software" could ruin decades of future products.

Personally I think they should have kept a 15'' and 17'' inch think ''Classic'' Macbook Pro around and gone with Nvidia dgpu just for that product - but that is just a dream!!

Apple have done it in their own way - external GPU support. You get the benefits of a thin and light device, it is also capable of hooking up to a high end external GPU and multiple external monitors. Apple do things in the way they think is best, can't argue they won't dilute the brand to give segments what they want, the masses get forced to comply.

Sure it does. Some people feel so strongly about the headphone jack it propels them to whine on a public forum. I’m just wondering if they have the courage to actually switch. Whines are easy.

No courage would have been removing the headphone port and pushing USB-C instead of a
dumb proprietary solution. Ditching lightning would have been courage.

As someone who has spent a fair bit on headphones that work well with the headphone/mic port on iOS devices, I hope I won’t lose functionality if I have to use yet another adapter just to be able to use my headphones.

Isn’t the drawback of powerful graphics cards that they require a lot of power, needs lots of space for cooling and run hot? These properties are anathema to a Mac which tend to be thin and prioritise battery life and silent workflows.

Instead, Apple makes up for this with optimised software like Final Cut Pro which give you superior performance despite running on hardware with supposedly gimped specs.

I don’t see this changing anytime soon.

Apple is using AMD Vega graphic cards in their Macs which are notorious for consuming more power and produce more heat than Nvidia Pascal.
