The Surface 2 pro is amazing. I've used it next to an iPad and it is a much better tool for working. It's ugly, but it is probably the best tablet I've used for creating anything instead if consuming info.

I had a surface pro but returned it after 10 days. It's too heavy to be a tablet and too small to be a laptop imo.

Who knows what Ive is going to do to OSX this year.

apple has been pretty clear that they don't think much of microsoft's strategy of using the same OS on both touch and non-touch devices. besides, it would require an absolutely MAJOR rewrite (and rethink) of the whole OS X and all its first party apps. there are exactly two chances of any that - slim and none.

Apple might expand some ios capabilities (particularly regarding multitasking) to make it more "pro" but that's about it. anybody expecting some sort of hybrid such as this "analyst" is talking about is consuming large quantities of some stuff recently made legal in Colorado.

Fall? I'm gonna let you all in on a secret. Everything apple will release this year which isn't just speed bumps will come out at the very end of the year but actually catch up with demand early 2015. It happens every year because apple always want to push the boundaries further and further... Eventually they have to postpone till the very end of the year, just to pretend it's actually released this year.

What sounds more plausible is a notebook running on Arm for the cost savings, rather a 12" convertible iPad. They made a big point to say that the new 64 bit A7 was desktop class. So I would imagine the A8 to be even more so.

Yep. He most definitely did.
I love the idea of a larger iPad! Being a designer, but a "hybrid" is not the answer and sounds like this analyst is begging for attention.
Better functionality to use the iPad as an external display, and iOS 8 sound perfect to me.

I can imagine your particular use case scenario, for sure. I also would like to see Apple add support for BT mice on the iPad, even if they somehow made it proprietary with the Magic Mouse. I desire this feature in a "use case scenario" way, and I don't see what possible harm there could be in adding it.

Apple doesn't make products that focus on the Enterprise. They target consumers. They target the end user. While this may be a product that's Enterprise-friendly, it will not be marketed as such.

(Okay. there was the xServe. But that was taken out behind the barn and mercifully put out of its misery.)

IF this becomes a thing, here's what I predict:

At your desk, you have a docking station. It has a couple of USB ports and an audio jack on the back. You can either have a Bluetooth keyboard/trackpad or a wired one. (A mouse might be problematic). You could hook a printer or scanner or whatever up to one of the USB ports, or print wirelessly.

The large iPad would have a lightning port on both the bottom and side.

When placed in the dock, you can control the iPad with the keyboard and trackpad. Or at least just the keyboard (via arrow keys).

I don't forsee a iOS/OS X hybrid device. Too many problems with apps not being compatible between the two.

I don't forsee a device that only allows touch input. Too problematic - especially when sitting at a desk.

Of course, one could ask why this setup isn't already available for existing iPads...

------------------------

One more thing. Office for the iPad is going to be a subscription service. That's going to displease a lot of people.

And the first generation will only do one or two of these things so they can add one feature each year so you have to keep upgrading. :D That would be normal Apple strategy.

OS X Optimized for Touch

"2-1 hybrid"?! seriously? another analyst blowing smoke and reading tea leaves. what OS is this supposed to run? OS X? ZERO chance of that as OS X is absolutely not optimized for touch. ios? we already have that. so what's with this 2-1 crap?

I'm still thinking how Apple pulled that 64 bit processor out of their ass with ZERO leaks. The industry was shocked.

How much you wanna bet that there are teams working on optimizing OS X for touch and that it will be released upon a shocked industry? That would beat Microsoft and Android into submission.

That's just what I would do, and what do I know?

:)

How would it beat Microsoft into submission, Windows is already touch optimized and so is Android? iOS competes with Android, OSX with Windows.

Conquering the Enterprise

This analyst is so clueless if he really thinks Office is all it takes to conquer the enterprise IT market. There is so much more to it. Central administration, integration into the Microsoft server landscape, software distribution, enterprise-friendly license models, hardware distribution channels, enterprise-level support etc.

Apple isn't after enterprise, they know it's not their expertise.

It's simply never gonna happen. Unfortunately the guys at the top, the ones who write the checks, are advised by the very technical people who's primary job is to protect their own income. Microsoft is just too supported by dinosaurs who are unable to evolve.

A tablet running Mac OS with support of stylus like the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 would be good. It would be perfect if it has a separate GPU for 3D CAD applications. Otherwise, I go for the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2.

I dont get it

I just don’t get the larger size? ipads are ultra-portable and a very intimate device one interacts with by holding it, and in nontraditional stationary manner of consumption. A larger one seems to do nothing other than impress by its size. That’s it. They must be following in the PC footsteps of making it more of a convertible laptop to tablet with a removable cover that also double as a detachable keyboard. And what is that going to do for the unseen youtube authority that decides some videos are absolutely not playable on mobile devices and demand you watch it on a desktop. They are going to get so confused!

Pfft - another rubbish product incomming

What a waste of time and money owning one of these things.

All it is doing is further fractionating an already crowded segment of technology.

Thing is, Apple will have some excellent sales and marketing and make many people really believe they need a device like this.

I actually think that Apple need to put a touch screen on a macbook air and give it a convertible keyboard like a thinkpad or a dell xps flip monitor or something. That would require a re work of OSX or a new version OSXI for that - something Apple should focus on.....

If this doesn't run full Mac OS, it's useless as every other iPad.

There used to be speculation about plans to one day merge OS X and iOS. Or expanding iOS and migrating Macs to them. Or something like that. Wonder what the status of those rumored plans is?

It'll be very interesting if a directly enterprise focused iPad release by Apple gives Microsoft pause in releasing Office for iOS. On one hand, it could be taking advantage of the inevitable. On the other, it could be handing Apple the keys to Microsoft's enterprise kingdom.

Tim Cook: Hey Microsoft! Hurry with that version of Office for our device that we hope will kill yours and every other windows tablet out there.

Yeah right, that'll happen now. Geezus, Analysts are really stoopid.

Apple better polish up their PlaySkool version of iWork.

To be fair, it wasn't the analyst who promoted the idea that Microsoft is soon to release a version of Office for the iPad, it was MR that made the connection. One thing we can be certain about is that job one at Microsoft is protecting their crown jewels, and releasing an iPad version of Office is not only not needed to do this, it could easily become counterproductive.

I sense a case of fanboism here... fair enough we are on an Apple forum BUT...

And how has the 64 bit processor significantly changed the tablet market as a whole? For example, have a look at the top 100 Apps on the app store. Fair enough, some of the blockbuster games are there but many others like facebook, pinterest, skype etc are there as well. Those apps don't need 64 bit processors to run any better than they do now.

It is a logical step in the Apple " A" chips - mainly I think to address more than 4Gb of memory but it could have been released and nobody would have noticed.

Microsoft will never be beaten into submission. It is the reason there is money flowing through your bank account to buy your Apple stuff. As for android - it will never die also - It has a predominant market share of the phone and tablet market worldwide.

And who would want them to die anyway - we need competition in the technology segment so there is innovation...

I sense a lawsuit coming. Story from 2 days ago:

http://www.sammobile.com/2014/01/01/exclusive-samsung-galaxy-note-pro-12-2-sm-p905-antutu-benchmark-and-specs-confirmation/

I mean Apple suing Samsung obviously, for copying Apple in advance of their product.

To be fair, MS could make more money selling Office on iPads than they can make selling their own tablets.

I want to draw on a iPad just like a wacom Cintiq. Come on Apple, give it to me!!!

There is a recently updated apple patent for a laptop with detachable touch screen. The screen/tablet would have retractable magnetic hinges and wireless charging from the keyboard portion. I hope it's really coming.

Apple is looking to launch a 12-inch iPad in the fall of this year, targeting enterprise with a new "hybrid" device intended to bridge the gap between tablets and notebooks.

Tim Cook:
"Anything can be forced to converge, but the problem is that products are about tradeoffs and you begin to make tradeoffs to the point where what you have left at the end of the day does not please the user"

"You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not going to be pleasing to the user."

And I suppose we'll still be stuck with that iconic and versatile 3-row keyboard that iOS seems enamored with. As long as the iOS sticks with 3 rows (no matter what the orientation or size of the device), the MBA will still rule and probably weigh less in the long run (once you add a plastic cover wrap to the Maxi Pad).
