Apple won't give control up and allow Vulkan support, so they really need to bridge the gap here by creating a solid player base to incentivize developers to natively support.

The first step to that is to take their gaming division seriously, something they've yet to do lol. These half-steps really don't move the needle.

It has nothing to do with control. Metal was first and Apple needed something more performant than OpenGL, Khronos Group dragged it’s feet, so Apple made what they needed. You can build Vulkan to iOS a number of ways.

Also, the zombie of Game Center makes an appearance. Like, really?! Is it April 1st?

Game Center ... ahh yes..
My favorite thing to have keep "logging out of" when it decides to "log me back in" after software updates

Have never used it for anything and don't even know what it's supposed to be for.

It feels like we are a few more plot twists away from Apple offering their own sports betting App

The "make number go up" train keeps chimmin' down the tracks

LOL so true! I always appreciate your posts :) In the before times on my iPad 2, I seem to remember a word game that would send notifications when it was your turn. I think that was peak Game Center. I wish I could remember what that game was, sort of a asymmetric, 2-player proto-wordle (goodness excuse me)

Valve should convert L4D 2 to 64-bit and native ARM using Metal. If they are never going to make L4D 3, they should just make L4D 2 work on current Macs.
This would build unbelievable amounts of good will. And make Alex playable on AVP with PS VR2 controllers. Do it.

Compete how? Much as I despise the Epic store you can play good games on it and it offers value from a company that GETS games. Apple has none of this
Epic is only good for the free games they keep giving out hoping you switch from Steam. But no one wants to switch to buying games on Epic when Steam is so much better.

Wouldn't it open the door for more support by using Vulkan now though? The Asahi Linux team created their own Vulkan driver for M1 for this reason

Isn't MoltenVK built specifically to bridge this gap? Granted it probably has some overhead compared to running on bare metal

It would be too massive of an undertaking for Apple at this point, they started building their core technologies on Metal years before Vulkan was even released. Lots of their applications use Metal backends. Bridging is really the only way to go at this point.

Have never used it for anything and don't even know what it's supposed to be for.

Cloud game saves across your multiple devices.
Game achievements and leaderboards.
Friend support to see what they’re playing.
Multiplayer support.

Some smart people here, who surprisingly miss the obvious sometimes.

I don't play Apple Arcade games. They don't interest me. I'm more into sim racing on my PC.

But then Apple Arcade is not for me. It's not for any of us who would post in this niche community.

Apple Arcade is for kids, families and casual gamers who don't want to expose themselves to ads and crap you get via the App Store.

People saying Apple needs to buy a AAA studio or compete with Steam at their game really don't get it.

There is such a huge gulf between what people in this thread mean when they say "game" and what Apple means when they say "game". This crowd is thinking "AAA games", however that's defined. Apple is thinking Solitaire and Candy Crush.

Apple's idea of games makes way more money. As much as I love a good immersive game experience, most people are just looking for something to play on the subway or while waiting for a friend to arrive.

Looks like someone else noticed the same thing:

Apple please just let xbox or steam make their own gaming apps. Even epic would be better at this (though we both know apple would never allow that)
Xbox is allowed to make its own gaming app. Cloud gaming apps are fully allowed, and I know of one that exists. Microsoft said they won’t make an app because of Apple’s fees, which is funny in a way because Microsoft also charges 30% for games sold on its platform.

Apple doesn’t understand gaming from day one … Arcade was a nice idea and pleasant to use initially … now it’s aiming mainly to small children who borrow their dad or mums phone while they have their coffee with friends and don’t want to buy a Gameboy as it’s too early … saying that I don’t know what would be the way to go for Apple in that field …

Offering an app like this without a significant improvement in both quantity and quality of the available games on Apple platforms would be pointless. This had better come with an announcement of buying Ubisoft and EA or something of that scale.
