The MacBookAir makes so little sense in Apple’s lineup. Is Apple giving up on the ultra portable new generation MacBook? The MacBookAir started off expensive like today’s MacBook and eventually lowered in price to somehow become the budget MacBook. So, then why isn’t the MacBook taking that place? Last year’s specs could become the entry level like Apple does with the iPhone. For schools, isn’t Apple pushing the iPad as the next generation ‘computer’? Why does the MacBookAir exist?
How can a phantom device that hasn’t been announced by Apple (and may not even exist) be delayed?
If you want a portable laptop, and I mean really portable (i.e. no dongles no adapters full day battery life) and don't care about screen res, it makes a LOT of sense. The MacBookAir makes so little sense in Apple’s lineup. I still don't get it – why is it so hard for Apple to just create a great laptop? MBA is timeless, just upgrade the specs, the screen and tweak the design a little bit. What we need is a reliable machine. Nothing less, nothing more. Same as with Mac Pro. Just use the old silver case, upgrade the specs, create new amazing display a you are done. Professionals will buy it as soon as it hits the stores.

Makes perfect sense since cannon lake got delayed the other day. The new MacBook is certainly to use dual-core CannonLake CPUs
Keyboard aside, the current MacBooks and MacBook Pros are pretty great.
A product release can be delayed without a public announcement. Or are you suggesting that Apple don't have any kind of planned project / release schedules? How can a phantom device that hasn’t been announced by Apple (and may not even exist) be delayed?

Intel Cannon Lake CPU. The MacBook delay announcement comes two days after Intel (once again) delayed Cannon Lake, as I wrote above. They have to be connected since Cannon Lake chips are the new-gen low-power CPUs perfectly suitable for the new entry-level MacBook.
My guess is Intel overpromised how quickly they could keep improving the Y-series of CPUs, and so Apple originally thought they could make the MacBook the new entry-level laptop. Instead, Y-series CPUs are still slow and pricey, so Apple has to keep the Air around longer than planned.
and nvidia graphicsI know this isn't necessarily a popular opinion around here (really not sure why but thats for another thread...), but this is exactly why Apple should be sourcing CPUs from AMD as well as Intel. AMD has been on point this last year delivering great performance with Ryzen and forcing Intel to finally increase core counts (which Apple has for some reason not bothered to start updating the mac lineup with... but again, story for another thread...)
It just doesn't make any sense to continue holding the mac lineup hostage to Intel's delays, Apple already has a good relationship with AMD, and AMD already has CPU's that would fit really well into the mac lineup (65W 2700 8C/16T for 27" iMac, 15W 4C/8T Ryzen/Vega APUs for MB/MBA/MBP 13" come to mind as especially good fits).
This would also be a better long term choice, IMHO, than trying to force arm down mac users throats. Let Intel and AMD compete for your business Apple, you'll have a faster/cheaper (for Apple)/more interesting lineup without forcing a rough and unnecessary transition on your user/developer base.
Best Buy has a massive sale on the latest 12” MacBook.
You make it sound as if a computer is made up of legos where you can just exchange any one component for another similar one, and then they magically fit.
Because their main component supplier keeps delaying their chips? Do you have an alternative to offer?
Maybe they feel releasing earlier will hurt sales of a potential new MBP.
The reason of the delay due to delay in Intel CPU sounds a bit strange. Why all major computer companies have already released new laptops with new Intel CPUs but Apple can’t?
Nvidia graphics would be nice for those with CUDA dependent workflows, but i suspect that CUDA, along with weak OpenCL performance and higher price is exactly why Apple's is unwilling to give users that choice. Apple doesn't want to help Nvidia lock the market into CUDA any more than it already has. Sucks for users caught in the middle.and nvidia graphics
These constant delays on the MBA updates has led me to buy a laptop elsewhere. I've now replaced my 2011 MBA with a Windows PC that was far more recently updated and better equiped, and with discount, less than similar MBA.
why have you ignored this so long Apple? All you needed to do is refresh the damn CPU/RAM/Storage options and upgrade the display to 1080p (minimum) and you'd have a killer Ultrabook
Ah okay, didn't see that in the article. Okay, well I suppose there isn't much they can do then. Kind of reaffirms why they want to move to their own chips though. I have made the move to iOS only partly for this reason.
