A publicity stunt? So they hacked themselves, ruined their reputation, released their private emails, released their employees personal info... For publicity on a movie they can't release.

People love conspiracy theories.

lol "ruined their reputation"?

This *IS* their reputation!

Am I the only one old 'nuf to remember Sony distributing malware? I'm sorry, "DRM"? lol

And, you're yet another person forgetting the movie Annie...

I mean, seriously, if not for the publicity from this scandal, who'd ever watch such a crap remake or a crap movie? Already made $24mil+ domestic...

Explain *THAT*

----------

Sure, they leak all the employees SS numbers, all that personal information just to hype a movie. I don't think so. Anyone who thinks Sony did this is not very smart.

And you're assuming that Sony is smart?

Have you seen ANY of the Spiderman movies?

----------

The line below their names mocks the actors, saying something like "Don't take these American idiots seriously".

The ultimate truth in advertising...

One movie?

Someone's forgetting Annie!

Who the Hell would bother watching such a crap remake or such a crap movie, if not for people hearing about it from this story?

The money made on Annie, that it otherwise wouldn't have, due to the publicity, surely makes up for any losses...

My point was... I seriously doubt Sony was behind the hacking scandal and released 47,000 social security numbers and private emails to promote any movie.

You can hate Annie all you want. It's not my kind of movie either. But Sony didn't start all this trouble just to create buzz for a movie.

The movie had some funny moments but it got tired fast and I rode it out until the end without many laughs.

I think the comedy would have been better served if a fictitious country and leader were used that were obviously meant to represent NK and Un. It's easy enough to do and can push the absurd humor further.

NK and Un showed the world, with the hack of Sony, the degree to which they are irrationally sensitive as to how the world views them, and as such are volatile and dangerous as a militarized nation. That they thought this hack/leak would empower them in the eyes of the world demonstrates their disconnect from reality, as the exact opposite happened.

A must see? Really?

I meant must see as in need to be in the loop not that it's a very good movie or likely to win any awards.

That said I loved some of the jokes but I do agree they could have just used a fictional country instead of NK and still had the same impact.

Both the Playstation Network and Xbox Live has been hacked as well today. All services are off line, and thus can't download The Interview.

Maybe Apple SHOULD have made it available...

Why would they need to? Let MS and Sony deal with the hacker traffic.

Around the world

Let's not forget that Apple has a physical presence through its retail stores around the world, not just the United States. If theater chains are squeamish about screening this film and thereby becoming objects for terrorist attacks here in the United States, imagine how concerned Apple would be for its retail stores in countries where it cannot control the security of its customers or its employees.

Today I bought "The Interview" on Youtube (Google Video store) and I think that for less than $15.00 it was a steal. I loved it. Laugh at it. and enjoy it. I ended up thinking that all of this was a great promotional stunt for this movie.

Thumbs down !

The funniest part of this movie was the "Interview" with Eminem.
ISHTAR WAS MORE ENTERTAINING !

Remember people, Sony censored themselves! Then they decided to show it anyway. The act of canceling the movie and then changing their mind it was a cynical calculated marketing ploy to drum up ticket sales. The movie sucks anyway. Don't kid yourself into watching the film "out of principle" or "in the name of free speech."

Maybe it's just me, but reading this thread, it’s hard not to compare these supposedly North Koreans (HenryDJP and Capt. Gilgamesh) trying hard to protect and defend their venerable leader, Kim Jong-un (Apple). Lol.

PS.
Its a joke.
Please don’t hack me.

Keep my name out of your silly posts. If you have a point to make about me say it to me.

Excellent post, but many of the Apple haters here will get upset at you for posting so much logic and fact. It destroys their argument against Apple. :D
I agree with you, the movie does suck. For a comedy it's just wrong on so many counts.

Smart move if true

While this plays well in the US, I really don't think this movie represents some cornerstone of freedom. The last thing they should do is get involved in some sort of international spat over a comedy that nobody will remember next year. Release it today and you're a political lightning rod, release it next month and you avoid the backlash.

Was reading on MSN that this is a big hit on the bit torrent sites.

I wouldn't pay to see this myself after reading what people have to say about it here.

A movie that most everyone (except for those die hard Rogan and Franco fans - if there is such a thing) would have simply passed by,now gets seen by millions and torrented like crazy.
The hack may not have been a Sony publicity stunt, but I can guarantee you that the choice to not show it and then actually release it was. Sony will probably now queue up the sequel. Maybe they'll go after the pope in the next one? How's that for controversy?

Apple might have been scared to earn the wrath of the hackers who might have exposed Apple's security flaws.

Yes and where are all these attacks that were supposed to happen if the movie was shown on Christmas Day? Nothing happened. It was basically a nonevent except for those people standing outside movie theaters hoping to get their face on TV.

The pope would probably take the movie with more grace than the Kim Jong-un.... And I don't see the Catholics of world trying to hack and bring down Sony...

Maybe because as a company they are becoming more and more of what consumers despise.

Google Play, You Tube, Xbox, Theaters, etc, all offered it .... but no iTunes.

Lame ass'd Apple .... again. :(

Apple decided to pass on a movie that only had controversy going for it. From the reviews I've seen, it was a poorly rated movie.
Plus, I think more people torrented it than actually paid for it. Apple missed out on nothing.
