I can see the desire for a 7" iPad; it'd be a lot easier to hold in one hand.

Ever watch Star Trek: TNG or DS9? The PADD devices look identical to how I would expect a 7" iPad to, and it seems like it might be a bit more comfortable to toss around in one hand.

7" and smaller, lower resolution screens, don't interest me, but after seeing the new iPhone screen, it seems to me that this would fit nicely in a line-up.

if they have to lower the resolution, why bother.

The only question is: WHY the heck would someone want to buy a 7-inch iPad when there are already 2 Apple-produced multitouch devices with 3.5 and 9 inches? To fit it in cargo pockets?

This rumor makes absolutely no sense in terms of market segmentation; I call it pure BS.

I don't know. Why would someone buy a 47" TV over a 50"? Why would someone buy an Interchangeable Lens Camera instead of a DSLR? How many football games have been lost because the final field goal went inches left of the goal post. We live in a niche world where it either fits a consumer's need or it does not. If it does not there is no compromise. The credit card does no come out.

7 inches are enough

Can't wait for the 7 incher. The cramps from lugging around the current model are killing me. And me thumbs ain't long enough either. Should have come out day 1 in my opinion...

White means pure, Is Apple pure? If so, pure what?

Yeah sure, a 7" iPad is just "waiting in the wings" but an announced product like the iPhone 4 White still hasn't been released.

But white is much difficult to build with. Making a totally different model is easier. That is why when Apple makes a CDMA iPhone it will be a totally different model Say a 4.3" screen or bigger so that those that have a little trouble seeing so not have to go to the Android route.

But Apple only likes to make one model of everything that it makes. Oh, that's right they only design they do not make any more.

I'd still love a bigger iphone. I keep thinking the only way that happens is if they start making alternate sized ipads. Time will tell I guess.

Obvious, they had to get their ass in gear if RIM is coming out with a small tablet computer (that in terms of specs, also kicks their ass).

I just hope they make this iPad a little more powerful and not overprice it like the old one.

What about an 11 inch? I would like it to be bigger, not smaller. Textbooks and Magazines are eventually going this direction and 7 inches would hinder that process. 9 inches is just barely passable (unless of course we are talking a retina display, then that changes the conversation).

I love how apple has practically branded an entire electronics segment.
The ipad is the new kleenex. It doesent matter that the box says puffs plus.
Its "pass me a kleenex".
"Do you sell the blackberry ipad?" - no its called a playbook. "Oh nvm. I want one
Of those ipad things."
Lol. Awesome.

I think the key is the ability to have a 'Retina' display on a device that size. Can't do it on the larger model.

I'd buy one, if that means anything. Newton replacement.

The 9.7" device is way too big for a go everywhere device. If I have to carry it under my arm or bring along a bag to carry it in, it'll stay home 99% of the time. Knowing that I didn't bother buying one.

I'm waiting for something small enough to fit in my coat pocket that offers a more rich user experience than the iPhone and the kind of low cost data plans available for the iPad.
I agree that 9.7" is indeed way too big for many of us.

In my case I travel frequently for business and pleasure. I'm already carrying a 15" MacBook Pro, because the type of work I do requires the resources and nothing else will do. Ad in my iPhone 4 which for obvious reasons is also a must have. For "casual use" of net browsing, grabbing the news, etc I want a 7" iPad. I have zero interest in one from another company, yet Apple will force my hand if they maintain their usual greedy position of selling the current model only, because they make more money.

Why wait? Why not lead?

A 7" iPad would fit perfectly in my already heavy laptop bag, and it's been carefully packed with only the bare essentials and NO heavy paper files, I do everything digitally. So bring out the 7" as an additional model and income stream for Apple. Everybody wins.

The 7 inch iPad is the final punch Apple has for this market.

No one is really making a true iPad competition device at 9-10 inches. Lots of potential ones coming out are in the 7 inch range. Apple can dump a 7 inch out there, have a 3.5 with the ipod touch, a 7 inch and a 9.5 inch model and suck all the air and money out of the room.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; sv-se) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

To me, I want an iPad that's between the iPhone and my notebook so I prefer the current size or even bigger. But everyone is different.

Apple has been working 3-5 years ahead of everyone else for quite some time now.... I almost feel sorry for the competition.

I think they didn't launch the 7" straight from the beginning because they already had problems with the delivery of only one model.

Yes, I agree. Apple's positioning itself for the competition that is sure to come. Seems Apple does it first, then all others follow. Just look at the smartphone explosion and variety not to mention forcing MS finally getting off it's duff and at least come up with W7.

The 3.5" screen is too small for my middle aged eyes.
The 9.7" device is way too big for a go everywhere device. ...
The thing that this rumor misses is that the size is the device. The 3.5" touch-based Apple device that can't make phone calls is an iPod touch. The 9.7" touch-based Apple device that can't make phone calls is an iPad. The two devices share much of the same functionality and can even run much the same software. However, they are different devices aimed at different markets and have little impact on each other. A 7" touch-based Apple device would be yet another device. It would no more be a 7" iPad than the iPod touch is a 3.5" iPad.

If you are already carrying around a laptop bag I don't see why you would have a problem with the current iPad size. It is about the same length and width as a piece of paper.

I think the quote itself is wrong independent of any other claims.

quote said:
To be clearer, the two devices were developed at the same time. They have pretty much the same specs, except, of course, the 9.7-inch model has a higher density screen than its smaller counterpart.

The 9.7" is LOWER density and notably one of the most widely produced sizes and resolutions out there, yet Apple still maxed out several screen vendors. :D

A 7" at the same RESOLUTION would have a HIGHER density and would be made to less popular and more difficult specs, so the backlog on shipments would be even more severe had Apple released what people are asking for.

As it is now we have pictures of celebrities holding oversized iPads going through airport screening making every opportunity to both be seen with it in public, and inconveniencing the traveling public in the process.

The iPad has arrived.

Rocketman

"The iPad is the one of the best selling devices in history. Why would Apple need to release a smaller version to compete in a market it owns. It doesn't."

Hah -- does nobody learn from history? GM, Ford and Chrysler are all victims of this faulty point of view: why build a smaller, more efficient car to compete in a market that we all own? I think we know what happened there. Same for Microsoft during the browser wars.

When your technology stagnates because you think you "own" a market, you fall behind and eventually something better replaces you.

A 7-incher is useless because it doesn't fit in a pocket.

I thought I wanted a 7-incher until I actually got an iPad.

Now I think it's too small (for PDF). But already since the announcement I think it's too heavy (get rid of the aluminium).

I don't understand the shock and awe about the idea of a 7" version of an iPad. It's just a display difference. I'm sure Apple has the option to shrink or expand their monitor choices at will with little effect for us.

I think the 7" will do very well.

That's what she said!

I think there is good reason for a 7" model. The iPhone is a bit too small for many tasks. The 9.7" has plenty of screen real estate, but it's somewhat awkward to hang on to and it still needs a separate carrying bag/case. A 7" model could bolster the same screen real estate (albeit more pixel dense), but the key is the ability to grip with one hand and slip into a jacket pocket. Realize 7" is the screen diagonal size, so the device size might be closer to 4"x5.5" (?) It would probably not need the full bezel if you can grip in one hand... maybe more like the iPhone, just on the ends.
