I really don't understand why anyone would think Apple is breaking away from their tick/tock cycle. Next year will debut the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus if history has taught us anything. Is there any real reason to believe otherwise? Genuinely curious if anyone has a legitimate reason.
Companies do this sort of unexpected move type stuff when their product needs a boost. iPhone sales are stagnating and another tock device could further the decline, while a whole new tick could make people sit up a notice again.

Apple do love a good pattern but they're also not shy about breaking them when it suits them. Ushering in a whole new form factor would be worthy of a pattern break.

5" screen in the current 4.7" form factor would be awesome -- I assume by removing the bezel that is how they get there, not by making the case physically larger.

Stupid how they put all the premium features on the plus. Apple, some of us (if not all) want all the goods from the plus but in the smaller 4.7/5 size!! aaaand now I sound like an iphone SE person.

Another BS rumor
Um...

If there is no top or bottom non-screen area, where do you hold it? Sometimes I need to grab the phone and hold it without cover things up or touching the screen, from the front. If it's almost all screen, how do you (sometimes) grab it or hold it without pushing buttons or accidentally swiping the screen? I think a bezel of some size at least on top/bottom is necessary for normal use.

Certainly not as important to Apple as the other phones...why? They don't sell as much. Less people interested. But a 1 year old phone isn't too bad.
Thing is they sold quite well. Enough to surprise Apple. What we haven't seen is Apple put all three on an equal footing with relatively similar stylings and features. I think there are more people interested in a smaller 4" sizing than people realize. Now that the smartphone market is well into maturity with little actual growth it's even more important to have some models out there that appeal to groups who won't buy the existing ones.

If that is so, I seriously hope they reduce the phone footprint to keep the screen size at 4.7.

Also, how do the selfie camera and ear piece get integrated in a bezel free design? That "demo" unit my Huwaei or someone else had some strange solution based on vibration of the glass for the ear piece, didn't it?

The Xiaomi Mi MIX is what you are talking about. It looks like an amazing phone that Apple should take some cues from. Ceramic, almost no bezels and the earpearce and proximity sensors embedded beneath the display. Front camera is at the bottom of the phone.

I need dat iPhone SE 2. Please let it be a bezel free 4.3" design. Would be amazing.
If the bezel is _completely_ removed and the home button with fingerprint reader integrated in the screen, you should fit 4.7" in the same size.

i am sure more people would love that Apple reduce the physical dimensions and keep the 4.7" and 5.5" because the footprint of 5.5" its too big

There's no need to change the physical dimension. Right now we have small, medium, large with 4.0, 4.7, 5.5". That would change to small, medium, large, exactly the same in your hand, with 4.7, 5.5, 6.2". If you wanted 5.5" but "large" was too large, you could buy 5.5" in the "medium" size.

Probably because they've already broken away from their typical cycle by keeping the same design for 3 years. They typically do a redesign, then an S-model then a redesign. Also next year will be the 10th anniversary for the iPhone

The overall size is important for me as the 7 fits in my front pocket. If the 8 retains the same overall dimensions then that's good.

I appreciate that Xiaomi essentially did a proof of concept for Apple. From what I understand the Mi MIX is not going to be widely produced. Therefore, it's more of a sneakpeek of what Chinese manufacturing will be able to accomplish for Apple. So if the Mi MIX is what's in store, I'm pumped!

The more concerning point for me is the "curved" reference.

It's one of the most frustrating aspects of the 6/6s/7 design - the curved edges. Which when accompanied by the continued thinning of the device make it relatively more slippery to hold than the far superior 'squared' edges of the 5/5s/SE series.

There are some iPhone mockups around showing an almost bezel-free iPhone, but with squared edges, and it looks excellent. I know there are some who like the curved edges, but if you do a quick experiment holding a curved edge phone and a squared edge phone, you will definitely feel the squared edge phone more secure in your hand.. and then try it with gloves on!! ;)

I'd prefer a 5.5 display in a smaller form over a larger display in the same form.

Even reducing the 7+ bezels in half approaches the 7 form factor.
I guess we all would prefer a 5.5" screen in the in 7 form factor over a 5" screen in the 7 form factor. I guess we'd also prefer a 5.8" screen in the 7 form factor. But putting a 68.6 mm wide display (5.5" & 16:9 = 68.6 x 140 mm) into a 67.1 mm wide chassis is a little bit difficult.

4.7" is perfect size for me. Any bigger is too big. If they can fit 5" in the current 7 profile, then I'll be in!

edit: I am also not very into this fragmentation direction that Apple is heading in. Just because I don't like a giant phone doesn't mean I shouldn't get the newest features (when physically possible). Started with the iPhone 7/7+, has now moved to Mac... disappointing.

Please though...it doesn't really need to be thinner.
I already have to pick up my apple TV Siri remote with a spatula! ;)

So... where do you put the facetime camera.. These early rumors are so full of holes.
Other smartphones that went almost completely bezel-less 'solved' this by putting a small bezel on one of the four sides (the bottom) and put the front-facing camera there. Very thin bezel laptops have done the same. Of course the perspective a camera below the screen sees is less flattering.

Because next year is the big "10 Year Anniversary" of the iPhone. Everyone is expecting something special. We could be wrong though...
