Are we getting closer to a lineup totally without the "air name"? Something this:

MacBook - small and medium screen size
MacBook Pro - medium and large screen size (and of course more powerful etc.)

iPad - small and medium
iPad Pro - medium and large

And maybe the same with iPhone and the rest of apples' lineup??

Why the hell is everyone on here a video editor or photographer?

Lets be real. Most of the population use their laptops for word, internet and email.

I earn millions a year and just use my laptop for word, excel, email and the Internet. The Macbook is fine for me and is a lovely device to use and own. I also own a Macbook Pro 15 inch, an Apple destop, Surface pro 4, Surface Book, iPad pro in addition to many other devices but my favourite item to use everyday is the Macbook. I would welcome a 15inch version.

If you need more power then there are many alternatives. However if you want aesthetic design there is no alternative.

Do you know how much of your 400 GB of data you actually use, though?

Most users come nowhere near the amount that their ISP is selling them.

I've checked. I use about 30 GB of data each month at my house. Comcast is charging me $50 for 500 GB of data. Meanwhile, I'm getting 6 GB of data from AT&T. It would only cost me $40 to boost it to 50 GB/month - more than what I actually use with Comcast + what I'm getting with AT&T right now, and it would all be faster and with a lower ping.

I tried tethering for a week, but it was less than convenient, as I said before.

I've heard that cellular modems exist, but I've never found one that I was confident would work with my wifi router.

yeah most months I use over 400gb but it works out because some of it is during my unlimited portion. I guess you don't watch netflix

16:9 screens are a massive NO. 16:10 and even the 3:2 as seen on the Surface Book are the way forward.

the 13" macbook air has a 16:10 screen....

They quoted me over €1000 for a repair on the iMac I had before I got this one.
I was 3 months too late for a replacement program they had been offering.

Heat issue as well. The good old ATi/AMD graphics chip problems.

My 2011 iMac suffered this too, but I was in-time for a replacement.

Certainly at those prices I'd expect either lower cost out-of-warranty repairs or a reasonable warranty period.
They don't have to, people buy their machines in droves anyways and they begun to act like it, that's the difference compared to several years ago.

Glassed Silver:mac

I have always bought Macs, since the G3's of old. Im working on a 2008 MacPro Xeon right now.

But going forward I cannot justify buying £2k+ machines that I know and are designed not to last. Heat is the biggest killer in computing, every degree increase in idle / normal use temps lowers the life of components.

To that end I just build a Win 10 PC, with 2 x 980Ti GPU's, 3 x SSD and all the over bells and whistles for less than the cheapest Mac Pro. The machine used the best fans & heat sinks ( Noctua ) and runs almost silent, even under Intel's stress tests. It is clocked as in the top 1% of computers who have tested 3D Mark. The motherboard uses military spec capacitors and other components to increase life.

Apple cannot compete with that in terms of price, spec, design or long life. Their only selling point is that you can put the Pro on a desk, but my old Pro sat under the desk to that isn't really a selling point either.

iPhone Pro would sound totally ridiculous though.

I'm pretty sure they will change the naming convention for iPhones if only because "iPhone 12" would be super-clunky. But "iPhone SE" makes me think they have regressed to Performa days and lost any interest in customers understanding what is what.

Well my current 15" rMBP (2014) is thinner, lighter and more powerful than my partners 2012 non retina model.

i would completely expect the next redesign to be all three of those things again.

Apple should keep pushing the boundaries of design. The idea that laptops are as light, portable and powerful as they ever need to be is laughable...

every time I have to carry around my partners 2012 model I curse that damn machine. I hope the new designs make me feel the same way about my 2014 model.

Faster, thinner and lighter please Apple.

Apple should have refreshed by now. Why are would they release a refresh so close to Kaby Lake release? Kaby Lake is finally going to make iGPU a viable option for a lot of consumers and the CPU bump will be much welcomed.

Why would Apple go for a redesign and sacrifice power with Skylake / Kaby Lake when 10nm chips are expected in 2017 with substantial power, and space savings?

Apple always seems to be close to a generation behind on CPU's in their computers. By the time they get around to releasing, the next gen is right around the corner. They'are always late to the party. They must think that, like a fine wine, aged processors are worth more.

I agree the aesthetics are really nice. For casual use, it looks real nice, and is a light carry. BUT, it isn't very powerful, and while $1200 is a drop in the bucket of your millions, for some of us, that money is better spent on something more powerful so it will last longer.

I can do word, internet and email...need a partner? :)

Apple should have refreshed by now.

It depends what particular processor and iGPU they're holding out for - last I looked not all of the options - especially the ones with better "Iris" or "Iris Pro" graphics - were yet available, and Apple aren't the type to throw together a laptop around whatever Intel has in stock today.

Plus, any re-design is probably going to include the shift to Thunderbolt 3, which could be a big deal. (a) they might want to do that across-the-range (b) that might warrant a WWDC launch and (c) it might make sense to link it with the next version of OS X.

They'll also need products to go with TB3: last I looked there was only one TB3-to-TB2 adapter announced (not necessarily available) - it cost $100 and looked quite bulky. Imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth on MacRumors if that were the only option to connect existing TB peripherals.

Also, I think its highly likely that the re-designed MacBook Pro/Air/Whatever will just have two USB-C/Thunderbolt ports. That's what the TB controller chip will drive. Having extra USB-C-but-not-Thunderbolt ports would be confusing (and probably need another USB 3.1 controller chip) and keeping some USB-A connectors would get in the way of a wafer-thin tapered design. Party line: with 10 hour battery life you can work all day without tethering yourself, while on your office/home desk you have a dock which charges and connects all of your peripherals with one plug. People here aren't going to like this (heck, I'm not saying *I* like it) but I think its inevitable. However, Apple would be stupid to make that jump without ensuring that all the necessary adapters and docks were ready to roll.

Of course, you might be right - they could be skipping a generation. Maybe there will be a simple Skylake bump of the existing models - but quite frankly, that's not such a big deal and wouldn't warrant a big launch.

Yes, Apple needs to combine the iPad and notebook like other companies...make a truly mobile device with a touch screen, pencil and a real operating system!

All I asked for was cellular internet on my laptop. My Windows laptop at work has a touch screen - I never use it. If it had a stylus, I would never use that.

Note to Apple, we don't need thinner MBPs. We need performance and ports. If we want thin we will get Airs or iPad Pros. Please, please Apple grace us with a real, powerful, portable laptop computer again.

I agree, but if they can also make it thinner and lighter, then why not? :)

They really need to just leave the rMBP thickness where it is.

The Air is really an enigma for me. It's got more features over the rMB but only the 13" model is worth buying imho. The 12" retina is so much more nicer over the 11" Air.

I am sure a lot of users would love to see a 14" or 15" rMB as well.

Here is what I want on the Pro:

current models (13' and 15'):
Captura_de_Tela_2016_03_23_a_s_10_40_34.png

new models mockup (14' and 16'):
macbpro.jpg

differences:
* same size, but thinner bezels with 14' and 16' screen sizes
* new keyboard with individual key's LEDs and the same travel as the new iMac's Magic Keyboard
* 3 usb 3.1 ports
* microSD and audio jack still there
* 12hr battery
* 30% thinner body and lighter
* discrete gpu on the 16" model

I agree, I would be happy with this.

I am tired of waiting for skylake macbooks. It has been rumored for like 9 months now. Every couple months I wait, a new rumor comes out saying its going to come in the next 2 months.

In the end its going to be expensive, and unable to run ps3 games

Congrats on being rich and being wooed by a thin shiny piece of aluminum with no ports to do word, excel, email and internet. You could do us a favor by not encouraging Apple to make thin as paper underpowered machines at the expense of not feeling quite as impressed with yourself. Thanks.

I think that is a realistic and good scenario.

Sidenote: I think everyone should calm down in here - still rumors right?

If people dont buy it then Apple will not make it. The shiny piece of aluminum fits in with my style. If I want a ugly powerful black box I would buy a gaming laptop. If I want to wear a watch purely to tell the time I wouldn't wear APs.

So many people on here rant and rave about specs, benchmarks and the latest software when at the end of the day these things mean jack to the majority of the public. We are not video editors or pro photographers.

While those are valid points, part of the reason for this animosity about performance is because Apple specifically marketed and arguably STILL markets to creative professionals quite extensively. They repeatedly say "come to us, we are the creative platform," while at the same time providing specs that are less than what that demographic needs and wants for their work.

Additionally, many professionals (not just creatives) invested a significant percent of their business into the Mac platform back when the hardware actually worked for them, making it difficult and in some cases prohibitively expensive to jump ship. That leaves a lot of lingering animosity that you see dumped out here.

So in many, and I would even say most cases, it's not that people don't understand the design philosophy, or who Apple is as a company, but that they have had all that and the hardware worked for them at the same time. Right now, they're feeling the squeeze, so to speak, in the spec sheet. They know Apple can do better, and are concerned that the company who keeps making it seem like they want the creative professional and other SOHO-esque marketplaces aren't actually listening to their needs.

Apple is a company in transition and we're all feeling it, I think.

I want to see convertible Macbook with huge battery life like Microsoft surface book. Don't forget apple this year is the year of USB-C 3.1!
