Will the 512GB model do everything native onboard? Or will NO iPhone 15 PM do everything native onboard?
Got the 1TB Pro Max and can confirm that 4k60fps ProRes won’t record to the internal storage on ANY size Pro. It requires an external drive for all storage sizes above 128 GB.

Looks like Apple updated the info on their website too:

“Your iPhone supports these resolutions and frame rates:

  • ProRes support for 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB storage capacity:
    • 4K at 60 frames per second (fps), iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max only, when using an external external storage device that supports speeds of at least 220MB per second and maximum power draw of 4.5W
    • 4K at 30 fps, 25 fps, and 24 fps
    • 1080p HD at 60 fps, 30 fps, and 25 fps
  • ProRes support for 128 GB storage capacity:
    • 1080p HD at 30 fps and 25 fps
    • 4K at 60 frames per second (fps), iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max only, when using an external storage device that supports speeds of at least 220MB per second and maximum power draw of 4.5W”

Thanks for confirming - unbelievable - makes it even more farcical that it only requires an external drive to write at a mere 220MB/s - so, your telling me the internal NAND flash on the 256GB and up SKU's of iPhone are below that requirement? obviously not! - purely a held back feature for the 16 Pro

The only legitimate counter argument to recording internally at ProRes 4K60 could be thermals from sustained write at the higher data rate, but at 220MB/s I doubt that's the case

Definitely a held back feature of the native iOS camera app…tested with the new Black Magic Camera app and you can record @ 4k60 ProRes internally (so at least there is a workaround.)

Really? I wasn't aware of that, assumed it was locked down on a iOS level to prevent it, have you tried it yourself personally? and if so, how are the results?

Could not agree more. Just make it 256 already!
Seriously the only options for the Pro iPhones should be 256GB and 1TB. No need for 4 sku's each for every model except the Pro Max which has 256/512/1024. And to the people who say not everyone needs that much space and its expensive then get the basic 15 or last years Pro model.

256GB is embarrassing in 2023.

Both Pro phones should be 1tb/ 2tb.

I mean let's be real, this year's Pro phones are next year's bottom of the range iphone 16.
Eh Just do 256GB and 1TB options. Even 1TB is a lot, I dont see the need for 2TB I mean I'd like it but doesnt seem like something Apple would be for.
