Radical new modular design coming in 2019....

2009-mac-pro_2l.jpg

According to geek bench the 6-Core nMP @ 2999 will still be slower than the current iMac upgraded to 4.0Ghz both for single and multicore. Oh and with the iMac you get a free display.

Am I missing something?

I've been sitting on a $3K budget for a machine for almost a year now and this bump still seems pretty terrible.

The 2013 were to be completely upgradable! now it is not! Be great if a third party come up wit an IO upgrade

Apple today introduced a spec-bumped version of the current Mac Pro, marking the first update to Apple's pro-oriented desktop computer in over three years. Apple also confirmed it is working on a "completely rethought" Mac Pro with Apple-branded pro displays that will launch at some point beyond this year.

The existing Quad-Core model with dual AMD FirePro D300 GPUs is now 6-Cores with dual D500 GPUs and 16GB of RAM for $2,999, while the 6-Core model with dual AMD FirePro D500 GPUs is now 8-Cores with dual D700 GPUs and 16GB of RAM for $3,999. There remain no Thunderbolt 3 ports or any other hardware changes.

Essentially, this means the existing $3,999 model is now the $2,999 base model, while a new 8-Core model with dual D700 GPUs is the new high-end option. Both models are equipped with 256GB PCIe-based flash storage, four USB 3.0 ports, six Thunderbolt 2 ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, and one HDMI 1.4 port.

Meanwhile, Apple said an all-new Mac Pro will be a high-end, high-throughput modular system that will "take longer than this year" to complete. It will be accompanied by an Apple-branded external display in at least one size, essentially marking the return of the discontinued Thunderbolt Display.

Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller via Daring Fireball:Apple said that Mac desktops represent roughly 20 percent of overall Mac sales, with the Mac Pro accounting for only a "single-digit" percentage of Mac sales, perhaps as justification for the elongated refresh cycle. 1,202 days had passed since the last Mac Pro update, per the MacRumors Buyer's Guide.

Apple also suggested that the "trash can" design of the current Mac Pro has restricted its ability to truly upgrade it.

Apple's software engineering chief Craig Federighi via TechCrunch:It isn't often that Apple pre-announces new products in its pipeline, but there were growing concerns that Apple no longer cared about professional users, and this is the company's way of proving otherwise. Schiller reiterated that Apple is committed to the Mac and has "great products" planned for the future.Apple has yet to update the Mac Pro product page on its website, but the refreshed models should be reflected soon.

LOL, pathetic.

Most people who were smart enough to see past Apple's BS have already jumped ship and built themselves PCs that are many times more powerful and at a fraction of the cost of a Mac Pro. There is NO reason to buy a Mac if you're a professional; the hardware sucks (its 5 years old) and the prices we're outrageous 5 years ago which they've remained until today.

How the hell do the remaining Apple consumers allow themselves to get shafted like this? I understand the desire to stick with OS X because it's great... but my god, how much longer are so many of you going to allow yourselves get screwed like this?

Great now everyone can shut up asking for new Macs in every single MR post.

As a MacBook Pro user this isn't exactly relevant to me, though eventually due to heavy video editing I might splurge and go Pro--I just love the portability of a laptop and have been a laptop user only for 15+ years. However, this should be interpreted as good news. Without getting too much into conjecture it sounds like Apple is settling into a new form factor across the board with it's computers that should carry it for the next several years. Hopefully that means it then concentrate on major spec improvements. The unibody MacBook Pro was introduced in late 2008 with Core2Duo processors in the 2.0-2.8 ghz range (give or take) with dedicated graphics cards and modest amounts of RAM...I think 4GB was the original stated max then until Snow Leopard came along and allowed for more. Nevertheless, to see the difference between the start of the life cycle and it's end (Mid/Late 2015) is unreal. I do realize that late 2008 vs late 2015 was not *exactly* the same in that by 2015 they had shed the optical drive and the form factor became thinner, but overall it was a similar appearance with no revolutionary form factor changes (i.e. colors/touch bar). I'm typing on a late 2015 with 2GB graphics that handles 4K no problem, 16GB of fast RAM, a VERY fast 1/2 TB SSD drive and a gorgeous retina display. I think this only affirms what most on here agree: never buy the initial life cycle of an Apple product. Apple continues to love it's aesthetics which I have no problem with, but traditionally it seems aesthetics precede performance with Apple products. I look forward to where the MacBook Pro will be in 2 years and where the new MacPro will be 2 years after it's new form factor release. I believe those computers are the ones you buy and milk out 5-7 years of high performance from. That's obviously one man's opinion, but at least it's encouraging to see where they are going!

Give me a tower and take my mother****ing money.

Please, no. That would be the final straw for me. A vertical touchscreen on a desktop computer is utterly unnecessary.
You know you don't have to touch it if you don't find it useful. But those who do, could...

John Gruber at Daringfireball still doesn't understand where the pro market went.

Apple bet on a dual-GPU design (multiple smaller GPUs, with “pro”-level performance coming from parallel processing) but the industry has gone largely in the other direction (machines with one big GPU).

No. No, John. The pro industry didn't largely go in the direction of one big GPU. They went with multiple big GPUs. And they went with nVidia.

Pro user will not hold their breath for the supposedly all mighty new Mac Pro. Many have been burn by the trashcan and crossed over to other OS. To wait it out for another year or two or three to see what happens is not really a pro user.

Phil. You are 2 years late. Most of the people waiting on Pro already moved to PC a long time ago. Good luck in the future. Hopefully it works out.

Believe me, I wish I could just build a Windows desktop and be happy (and I have a Windows desktop now that I mainly use for gaming), but I just really really prefer macOS. I prefer it in almost every imaginable way. So until Apple discontinues macOS, I will always pursue a new Mac.

It would be cool if the released and "entry level" priced Mac Pro based around the AMD Ryzen.

I could see them rolling out an updated Mac Pro in 2018 with the Ryzen chips that just came out last month. Add in a mid level AMD card from the end of 2016, and we are all set.

With how much they probably spent on the trash can design, I'm shocked that they're working on an all new design. This is good news for pros that want a powerful desktop and monitor to pair it with.

Considering Apple's non iPhone revenue is larger than all of Google's revenue, I think Apple will be fine.

Wow.... This is unexpected. Is it a delayed April fools post?

Although I have said many times that there is a truly new Mac Pro, new iMacs, and Apple displays in the works. I guess this is confirmation to doubters.
Legit thought this was an old post that was accidentally reposted or something
