At least they said they were taking responsibility, and said they were changing directions... Eventually... Why 'say' it now? o_O And I'm done...

I don't know why Apple waited this long. Best case scenario is that they've been working on a new new Mac Pro for a while but didn't want to wait until WWDC to announce it for fear of losing more pro customers.

One worst case scenario is that it unfortunately just sunk in that killing the Mac Pro would truly alienate their pro customers and they've only just started to design the new new Mac Pro. If this is true then their heads have been deep in the sand.

Waiting until the fourth quarter of 2018 to deliver on this promise is also way too long.

Unless my point was that Apple DID close their eyes.

THREE YEARS OF EYE CLOSURE...

I'm so jaded over Apple. I can't stand it. They are being 'closed' in an open industry, and instead of being more open, they are being more closed.

Don't get me wrong, I do really like my iPad, and my iPhone, but I have a Macbook Pro sitting in front of me that is hobbled by the inability to upgrade the memory. And how long have notebooks been able to be upgraded? It's not like that was some 'new fad' that Apple was taking the high road over. Same with the iMacs, and the Mac Pro.

OPEN your systems, or people are going to walk.

And it took Apple THREE YEARS to decide they screwed their user base with the toyish Mac Pro? THREE YEARS? An apology hardly seems adequate...

And, yes, it IS still over priced!

The problem is, they're designing products for general consumer use as the primary reason these days. As much as we dislike it, the hardcore who love the Mac and want open systems to tinker with are a very small niche. I'm honestly surprised they reversed course on the Mac Pro. Smart move though, as even if there's less profit in this niche, you need to appeal to them as they're the ones who will also push Apple products to their circles as well.

That Mac Pro over 3 years must have a damn interesting story. They effed it up big time. I bet it wasn't so much that they had their eyes closed and didn't realize, but more that internally there was a lot of debate over it. I can easily imagine some really want to look forward with iOS and didn't want to put energy/resources into the Mac or Mac Pro at all, but some really fought for it. And for whatever reason it took this long for something to come of it.

Radical new modular design coming in 2019....

And I would cheerfully buy one.

Great complete turn-around by Phil and the gang - thanks for listening to the community.

I appreciate your optimism Daniel. However I don't think we should say they listened until we see some real details and specs. If they've really been working hard on it and they want to reassure us then why hold that information back? National security concerns? Afraid the Empire will learn of the location of their secret base and then crush the rebellion with one swift stroke?

Until then it's a campaign speech wrapped in an automobile advertisement and we all know what those are usually worth.

The report doesn't say next year.... it says not this year. You are assuming it will be next year. There is no information that explicitly says the Mac Pro will be ready next year. It's all hope at this point. Even tech can be prone to fake news.
To me, this is a way to hold off the inevitable...while they make up their minds what to do... I think the writing is on the wall as to where they want to go, it's not PRO computers or they would have done something different.

Wow.... This is unexpected. Is it a delayed April fools post?

Although I have said many times that there is a truly new Mac Pro, new iMacs, and Apple displays in the works. I guess this is confirmation to doubters.

Nope, its no joke :) We voted with our wallets, and they listened. If we had just taken whatever they shoveled at us laying down, then I doubt this drastic measure would have been taken. Apple should already have been doing what Jobs would do, without having to deprive us of products and, in turn, make us deprive them of our money. I'm looking right at you Cook.. straighten up before its too late!

Of course, Hackintoshes are limited to using hardware used in real Macs. If a CPU or GPU is not used by Apple, it's not supported by macOS. So this news of a more modular Mac Pro suggests support for more varied hardware, which should be good for hack builders too.

I'm on a GTX 980, but a lot of people have been waiting on Nvidia to release drivers for the 10xx series cards.

I'll believe it when I see it... oh and if they are doing this, how about a new iMac and Mac Mini this year to go along with a CoffeeLake MacBook Pro with a dGPU?

too bad, just build couple PCs for my production company and switch to Windows entirely this year.

I can't believe Apple with a good conscience would even sell the D700's. They are only good for OpenCL and as of now the only program Apple sells that is enhanced for OpenCL is a Final Cut Pro X. So I'm gonna buy a 7k computer to run a $249.00 prosumer App? And I'm only able to expand with TB2? While everything is TB3.. Seems pretty crazy to me. 50% off would be a better place to jump off at.

No mention of this on Apple's site, and why would they get out of the display business and then announce in a year from now they will be getting back into it? They also never comment on future updates, why would anyone buy an iMac now with their comment today?

Because they know every single production company that relies on updated or upgradable computer tech is switching to windows, and they aren't feeling the burn NOW, but if the iPhones ever take a dive, they will have lost a core market that can help them in dire times.

Can't help but feel they waited too long. This spec bump was due a year, maybe one and a half years ago, along with admitting the nMP was a dud. They've lost a lot of pros and developers and it'll take something truly miraculous on the hardware AND software side to get them back. I'm one of them myself. Switched to Windows after 21 years of Mac only late last year. Maybe my 2014 MBP will live long enough to keep me interested in this new Mac Pro when it finally emerges. Then again, nothing I've read so far makes me think it'll just be going back to a cheesegrater design. When Apple says "modular" that does not equate "industry standard components" by default. Their dongles are very modular, too. May we get to choose what GPU we want in the future? Maybe. Will we be able to just pick on up from the local computer store and install it in our Macs? I highly doubt that.
There isn't even a driver for the nVidia Pascal cards yet and Vega is not ready yet either. Apple needs this time to get gpus and drivers lined up, not for designing a nice enclosure.

Apple is seeing the smoke on the horizon and has only just realized it actually missed the train.

People say that, and yet they are still in here wishing Apple would release new hardware. Sounds to me like they went to PC / Windows because they had to, not because they wanted to, and they don't enjoy the experience so they want to come back ASAP.

So just as the new MacBook Pro sold significantly stronger, maybe this new Mac Pro will do better, too.

Heh. Apple suddenly caring about the pro market is like the farmer caring about his livestock after the barn gate has been left open for a week. After years of neglect, mediocre software, abandonment of Xserve and bs throughput speeds on supposedly professional products, true professionals have left Apple years ago and nothing will get them back Phil.

I get why some people are frustrated. I get the venting (usually), but...with something like this...

With your "true professionals" argument (what does that even mean?), they may as well shut the doors and leave Apple Park barren to let ideas like this rule the day...

Sure, because a lot of my workflows still revolve around the mac. For now. Once I have to switch over my e-mail, aperture to lightroom etc, I'll be gone for good. Windows 10 isn't half as bad and OS X/macOS has not been aging very gracefully these past years either. Had Apple made today's announcement half a year ago, I wouln't have bought a PC. I'm pretty sure quite a few ppl feel that way. I'm also certain Apple has very accurate statistics on how many hackintoshes are out there. I bet these numbers had a say in ehat lead them to finally come out of the closet.

Can you blame them for all the backlash they got with all USB-C in the MacBook Pros? I simply got $3 cables and now I have everything USB-C.
yes. in 2016/17, the world is still reliant on USB-A devices. While most devices can just have a cable replacement to be fine (like external hard drives)

there ARE items that require USB-A and have no USB-C devices that can replace them. Forcing to remember to need a dongle.

For example: Going to clientsites and having to use their USB sticks. They're going to be USB-A. 100% of the time. Servers don't have USB-C (yet), and enterprises aren't going to be replacing their expensive and fancy server infrastructure just to support USB-C

There are also still many cases of in the enterprise where USB-A "smart card" services are used. Dongles for security, and these are predominantly USB-A.

Then when you factor in that despite having 4x USB-C/TB3, the new MBP doesn't even offer full TB3 bandwidth to all 4 ports. only the two on the left offer the full TB3 speed. the two on the right only offer 1/2 TB3 speed due to PCI Lane limitations.

There would have been no problem with 3x USB-C and 1x USB-A on this device and it would have shut everyone up.

Instead they were "Courageous!" and made a decision that negatively impacts a lot of users because they can't use empathy to understand their own use cases aren't universally true

Apple admitted the Mac Pro is a single-digit percentage of Mac desktop sales, which in total are 20% of all Mac sales. So honestly from a financial perspective they should have scrapped it, not invest money in improving it, because the market was never of note to begin with even when it was "cutting edge".

They're not upgrading the Mac Pro to try and win market share (back) from Windows and Hackintoshes. They're upgrading it because they really do seem to give a s**t about a very small percentage of their user base and are willing to spend money on it even though the returns are not going to be very much (in comparison to the returns on most of their other products and product lines).
