"After January 1st, 2013, Do Not Disturb mode stays on past its scheduled end time."

This.

Does this indicate 'Do Not Disturb' is a network feature ? It certainly looks like it.

Can't this be done in the phone itself? based on the current time displayed on the phone ? It sure seems like any "network based" features are certainly becoming more of a hassle, then good. because now we not only need to worry about whats goes on locally, we also must now know weather the server will be up to use it ? eg like Siri.

This is all good, when it works...... And isn't they the point ?

For all those that are complaining... Just set the system date to January 7. Problem solved.
Never ever play with the iOS (nor OS X) time and date settings. By doing so you're willfully putting your own place within the space–time continuum at risk. And if you've seen 'Back to the Future' you know that careless dumb **** like that could irreversibly change the history of mankind...

As a programmer, I'd be interested to learn why it will resolve itself on January 7th. Is it because it's the first Monday of the year? That would line up with last year's bug fixing itself on January 2nd.

Yeah, I'm curious too.

And this explains why I saw my iPad 2 have do not disturb on in the middle of the afternoon! AND it explains why I've been hearing it pinging from the other room in the middle of the night. Glad to know it's not just my iOS stuff, but...weird...really curious how this bug happens.

EDIT: And yeah, why can't they rush out a fix? SEEMS like it would be something simple, though maybe they're scared to try to patch it quickly for fear of wrecking something else. Yup, "ding" again from the other room lol

Someones seen the movie...

Seriously people. This function was only introduced a few months ago. It's not like you've been living you're entire lives with this feature and it's all of the sudden been taken away from you. It's still there. You just have to flip the switch manually for 5 more days. Apple is not doomed, your life will not end. It will fix itself faster than a patch will be put out. Relax. Go about your day the same way you did before DND was even introduced.

Well, I have at least used the functions for the past years (previously Android owner, iP5 is my first iPhone) and have gotten used to it.

And no, it's not still there. Switching it on and off manually kind of takes away the big point of the function, that you can have it turn off and on according to a schedule.

Now that I know that it doesn't work I can adjust to that until the 7th. But since I didn't know it yesterday morning and I have used the equivalent functions for years with no problem it was pretty annoying/embarrassing that I missed two calls from my boss needing fast help from me and one customer before I noticed that the phone was still on DND (when trying to find out why I had missed the calls from my now angry boss, who had rushed down to my room because I wouldn't answer his calls).

I understand the cries of "First World Problems" however, if my $20 gophone gets this right, a phone with a "Premium" cost, and requiring a "Premium" plan should be able to get it right. We're talking about a phone that costs between $200 and $400 on contract in order to walk out with it. This is the 3rd Calendar related situation that has come up:

1st - DST Bug - Nov. 2010

2nd - New Year's Bug

3rd - Now this.

Don't make excuses for them, this should be a top priority for testing at this point because they have failed in this area in the past. If I was an auto maker, and I released a bunch of cars that repeatedly had the brakes fail.... I would test the brakes before releasing the next batch of cars. This is common sense.

Lol at anyone who had their life "ruined" by this insignificant bug.

You want to see bugs?
Call Android.

I didn't LOL when I had my angry boss yelling at me for not answering his calls yesterday morning at least. Happy to being able to amuse you though.

The ironic thing is that it was my angry boss who persuaded me to change from Android to iPhone...

Call Android you say? Don't only listen to the ones just talking bad about Android. I've previously to the iP5 been an Android user since the HTC Hero released and haven't personally been bothered like this on any of my Android phones since then. Maybe I've been lucky, until now that is. I personally have had at least as many/maybe more problems with crashing/freezing apps/functions on my iP5 that I've had on my previous Android phones (HTC Hero, HTC Desire Z, HTC Desire S and Xperia Ray). But maybe it depends on what apps you install on your Android phone.

The best excuse for everyone. I did not answer because of Apple. ;)

This is the second year in a row this exact "bug" occurred

Oh really? So how was DND on iOS 5? Was it a hidden feature or did you jailbreak to get it?

The only bug remotely similar to this was alarms needing to be reset after the switch from daylight savings time, not 'this exact bug'!

It's a bloody silent switch, a minor bug that will resolve itself in 4 days time. It's not a fundamental flaw, it's not a fundamental feature. Yes it's slightly irritating, but is it really so hard to open the settings app to flick it on and off manually for a few days?

but is it really so hard to open the settings app to flick it on and off manually for a few days?

It is not... And this is not the most important thing.

Look from the other side.

What if you weren't woke up to job because such a mistake of Apple? The problem is not about flicking it.

So true. I'm not usually one to cry "unacceptable" but this truly is. "Don't use it for a week and it will resolve itself" is just a crap answer for a third rate company, not acceptable for the "it just works" company.

The bug is so bad, that even the act of adjusting the on time for the feature turns it on instantly.

So, what else isn't working that Apple knows about and doesn't give a damn about? Privacy features? Security features?

They are basically telling millions of customers that they don't give a damn.

Google or Samsung need an add making fun on this one...

This is only a workaround, there is no possibility to produce a patch release before the 7th and its good to know that I can turn the feature back on after the 7th while waiting for the next release where it will be resolved properly. While I agree that this kind of bug is totally unacceptable to claim that Apple doesn't give a damn about it because they haven't instantly released an update to fix it is ridiculous. We all know that iOS 6 has been a complete disaster of a version from a quality perspective and Forstall was essentially fired because he was incapable of leading the iOS team and steered iOS into the mess its in now. Hopefully with his departure things will start to improve. Only time will tell.

At the very least they could have said "we will release a software update on January 7" that addresses this problem.

Then release a software update with an uprev'd version number. Heck, they don't even need to change the code.

Then it would at least have the appearance of "hey, we fixed it".

When you go to the coffee shop and complain "hey, this coffee is way too hot!", which would you rather hear: "Oh, so sorry sir, we'll fix that for you right away" or "It's fine, just don't drink it for a few more minutes, it will cool off on its own"? Even if all they do to "fix" it is let it cool off on its own anyway, you at least want them to appear to take steps to address the issue.

1) Lying to customers is not smart. People would look at the updated code and realise they'd done nothing - more bad press.

2) Complaining that a hot drink is hot... words fail me

Wait till the 7th? Who said it won't happen again in February? Also wait till Feb the 7th? Maybe it's a 2013 bug where DND won't work for first 7 days of each month :D

'Do not have irony' bug?

This is all so…

oh, what's the word…

DISTRACTING!

no… er…

DISTASTEFUL!

no, that's not it…

DISAPPOINTING!

well it is that, but no… if only there was a word to describe a feeling of worrying, perturbing, troubling, upsetting ; distressing, agitating, discomfiting, disconcerting, disquieting, unsettling, off-putting, dismaying, discomposing ; alarming, frightening, threatening, startling, devastating ; gut-wrenching…

Maybe I'll be able think of such a word on, say, Monday January 7th.

Sloppy on Apple's part - doesn't anybody there do any debugging anymore? Heads should roll. Oh wait....

In the words of the Bob's, "We prefer to just let these things work themselves out naturally..."

OH MY GOSH APPLE! LIKE SERIOUSLY! thanks to you i missed my totally hot pilates instructor's 11 AM sex call! I MISSED A SEXY TIME!

In iOS for Date format "YYYY" is very different that 'yyyy'. The first the year for week of. The other is the year for day of. Those 2 are the same all accept for just a few days of the year.
But more likely they are using the year for Sunday or Monday of the week hence the reason the 7th is when it will be fixed as right now it is trying to end it on 2012 and not 2013 so it does well passed the cut off date so the code never would trip.

Thanks, that makes sense!

I mean it's not a big problem at all, it's just silly how Apple had this, and before they had that alarm problem where recurring alarms wouldn't work, and then there was another one before that, which kind of makes me not trust my iPod Touch to wake me up or remind me of important things. I know one shouldn't trust computers to organize your life for you anyway, but when you look at a simple watch, unless the battery is dead (which you can see), you can be pretty 100% sure that it's approximately showing the right time and date. Whereas with complex devices, such simple tasks become more and more unreliable.

omg the world is ending. such a small issue. i didnt even know dnd existed. if i dont want to be disturbed i cut my phone off
