Would be good if they also enabled media stored in iCloud to be streamed rather than every file type regardless of type has to be downloaded in full. The files app on iOS has the ability to stream media from a connected drive/memory card, can they also enable the files app to stream audio/video stored on the icloud servers.

That still doesn’t equate to “every software release gets worse and worse and less reliable/stable every year.”
Some people extrapolate from two data points (iOS 12 and 13). Yes, iOS 13 is one of the buggier iOS releases but iOS 12 was one of most stable ones.

That's perfect, spring 2020 is when I was thinking of doing the OS upgrade after the last few (very few) 32 bit apps I can't quite live without have finally been updated. Not seeing a feature in Catalina which is worth even the tiny risk of upgrading, it's a non-release release.

This was a hotly anticipated feature by many, it’s a shame we have to wait until spring 2020 for this feature to finally roll out.

How hard can this be...?

It's people's data, so it has to be rock solid at launch or the backlash will be much worse than what it is when a OS release has some buggy apps.

It's a bummer it's not ready day, but much less of a bummer than it would be to start having data loss issues. So I'm fine with continuing to use Dropbox for folder sharing while they get it sorted out. And once it goes live there is no way I'm trusting this with my data day 1. Will let others be the guinea pig on this for at least the first year.

This will be part of iOS 14, macOS 10.16 update, along with iOS with multiple user feature.

I would think the last year or so has been incredibly challenging for Apple. They've been developing major changes to all of their operating systems simultaneously across all of their devices. With all the best will and resources in the world, this stuff is not easy. Could things have gone smoother? Sure, but anyone with even a basic knowledge of software development will appreciate the complexity of this stuff. I am disappointed but not entirely surprised that some features took a back seat for now.

Of course, anyone can make an argument that Apple bit off more than they could chew, but 20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing.

early in the betas it seemed like there was some major change under the hood for iCloud Drive that these features were based on which they had to roll back.

Right, and then we saw reports of people losing their iCloud data. Clearly, Apple reverted the iCloud Drive code afterwards and haven’t given it another shot in external builds yet.

Mounting a disk image over iCloud is flaky at best, doing it with multiple people can only lead to disaster!

Cuz it’s so hard to do and never done before by any cloud service ever!

OneDrive's been doing this so long, I can't even remember when they started...

Doesn't really matter to me, though. I've been using OneDrive since the beginning and as much as Adobe and Apple want me to buy another cloud service, it works just fine for me. I won't be changing over.

one word: Dropbox

Dropbox has a horrible history of hacking. I dropped Dropbox after the last breach.

"Buggier" is a good way to put it. It's not horrible, but it's pretty flaky from time to time. I actually like the new interface, and I anticipate the quirks will be resolved in time. I do agree with some, though, that Apple lately seems to push things out a little too quick before the code is properly baked.

The script for Apple & it's users:

Apple:
Announce new feature

Users: LAME! Tim Cook sucks. Windows/Android/Barbie Doll already has this feature. Stupid, nobody asked for this, not if Steve Jobs was still here. Why does anyone need this? It costs $10???? It should only cost $5 since I think it's lame and easily implemented.

Apple: Announce delay in the new feature

Users: LAME! Tim Cook sucks. I've been waiting for this for ages. I NEED this. This is the only feature worth upgrading for. How will I live without this feature? Why would they tease us like this? Hopefully, they don't raise the price—they should lower it!

Apple: New feature finally ships

Users: LAME! Tim Cook sucks. Not if Steve Jobs were here. They should have had this months ago. I got tired of waiting for this one feature that everyone on the planet needs to have (since I need it) and switched to Windows/Linux/Barbie Doll OS. This should have taken Apple 5 minutes to add to the OS, why did they make us wait? I don't need this feature. Nobody ever asked for this feature.

Rinse. Repeat.

I just want to be able to stream from iCloud without having to download to my device. Until then Dropbox keeps getting my money.

It's funny how iCloud was Dot Me (MobileMe), which was Dot Mac, which used to be iDisk… which was a cloud-based file sharing service. Oh, what is old is new again. But seriously, we have had this with DropBox, Google Drive, etc etc. Again, Apple waits to make something after every else has done it, and sometimes, waits too long.

It takes years for the tech industry leader to introduce folder sharing in its cloud offering. What a complete joke.

Tech industry leader in what? Their service layer has always lagged behind their competitors. Most should not be surprised by how late Apple is to this game.

Never fear though! I’m sure there are going to be clickbait articles and blind rats that proclaim how great this is

It was sarcasm, of course. I can’t believe how stripped down and devoid of basic features iCloud storage is.

Maybe they will do an entire iCloud update in March 2020? New storage sizes, pricing, etc.? It's a hope from me, and has been for a while.

What an embarrassing mess. I know people at Apple work hard and care, but something is very wrong in the software function at Apple.

Well there is a lot of software positions open at Apples Cupertino website so take that for fwiw.

but, my guess is there’s some kind of security issues they are trying to work out. I for one can’t imagine the amount of software they have to write and then test it for security. Giving access to iCloud servers and other people’s computers sounds tricky.

Wait what... just to confirm for someone down under ithe land of Oz.

Coming this spring in the US means we won’t see this until March to June 2020!? That’s a serious delay the next operating system will be announced shortly after.

That’s the new Apple. How’s that photoshop on iPad coming along for all those that bought iPads just for that purpose? Lol

Question for anyone that knows: Does this folder sharing capabilities within Catalina coming this Spring...are you allowed to share entire root folders and all of the contents? I work in a design firm, and our three artists are looking to share one folder that contains many other folders and files so we can all work from anywhere that fits our lifestyle.
