iCloud folder sharing would definitely be a great NEW feature to have, but why can't we get iCloud to work correctly as it is????

I store all my documents in iCloud and folders NEVER keep there actual modified dates. This is a huge problem for me as I like to sort my docs by date, and this ongoing BUG renders that useless.

I have used (and still use to some extent), OneDrive, Dropbox, and pCloud and NONE of these services do this. How is it that Apple can't get even the most basic aspect of cloud file management right??

Extremely disappointing.

Airpower is a huge failure that most people no longer think Tim cook able to deliver great apple products.
You are very funny. Most people have never heard of AirPower, even most Apple users in the U.S. have never heard of AirPower. A small number of people looking for a reason to complain care about it. Some use it as an argument for every possible negative.

All I can say is make sure you back up somewhere else as well. I could never rely just on iCloud. Too much can go wrong. Things get deleted.

Only to people who easily get the shakes and frothed up over mice nuts. For others, no worries, it works fine.

my iPhone and iPad both lock up completely when I tap anything with long press on the Control Center from the Lockscreen and I have to force reboot the devices each time. That’s not a little thing at all and especially annoying when I just quickly want to connect my airpods

Just tried this, as it sounds troubling. I do not have the issue - iPhone Xs running 13.1.2. Will try my iPad later.

I wish they'd get this out so I can finally ditch Dropbox.

Or corrupted. I had a bunch of (very) old font files get hosed on iCloud Drive. Fortunately, I also had a copy enclosed in a .dmg archive, which apparently protected them.

But to your larger point, absolutely. I run Time Machine plus a separate Carbon Copy Cloner backup once a month, kept offsite. My data is just too valuable to me to not do this.

The great news here is that if you're careful you can have both the convenience of iCloud Drive syncing and maintain solid backups of your stuff. Big external hard drives are dirt cheap these days and backup software is basically idiot proof.

You might need to wait for next spring.
Fair enough. On one hand I'd rather they get it right even if it takes more time -- and on the other hand... Dropbox has had this functionality for a decade now so it's hard to see why this is so difficult to implement.

I've always kind of wondered whey they do a major OS upgrade every year. I'm not as big a techie as most in here, though (that's a compliment, by the way, LOL).

Anyone is using iCloud Drive? This function and many others are available for years on Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive..

Apple is having some real growing pains. Yes, this is undoubtably very difficult, especially with Apple's intense focus on privacy and ease-of-use, but it isn't new territory and it doesn't bode well for Apple's expanding services/software push. If Apple can't onboard new talent and expand while maintaining its corporate culture, then these are worrisome harbingers.

"This Spring"?
Really?

God this company is horrible at some of this stuff.

That's perfect, spring 2020 is when I was thinking of doing the OS upgrade after the last few (very few) 32 bit apps I can't quite live without have finally been updated. Not seeing a feature in Catalina which is worth even the tiny risk of upgrading, it's a non-release release.

It's honestly a step backwards in many ways.
I'm not sure when I'll update to it at all really..

Maybe they will do an entire iCloud update in March 2020? New storage sizes, pricing, etc.? It's a hope from me, and has been for a while.

New More storage sizes, higher pricing, etc

I was really banking on this feature to be here nowish... I had a lot of pictures that I wanted to share with family and friends.

one word: Dropbox

DropBox is a mess on iOS. Its Files integration is very poor. Try to create a new Word document and save it directly onto DropBox using the Files integration. Then start editing, typing and save a few times. You will see DropBox making many copies of that file, and eventually Word will revert to an earlier version and your latest edits are gone. You can use Pages too to try this - create a file and save it to DropBox directly using the Files picker. Start editing for like 20 minutes, with some occasional saving and see what will happen.

No doubt that developing at this level is incredibly tough. But Apple needs to sit down and have a serious post-mortem review about their software releases this year:

- iOS 13 launched with fairly serious bug and quality issues.
- iPadOS was delayed.
- watchOS has issues on series 5 and 4 apparently - and it’s not even out for earlier watches.
- Catalina has dropped features & catalyst is just not ready.

The solution is obvious - Apple needs to stand up at WWDC and announce that many of the features for that years major point updates will have staged rollouts thoughout the first 6 months of the lifecycle of the OS, with the initial .0 releases having 1-2 key user facing features that will drive upgrades & focus on getting the foundations for the rest of the OS rock solid.

And catalyst is appearing to be just embarrassing. Perhaps they should’ve focussed on making it work for games developers only and putting it into an extended beta preview for everyone else.

The problem is probably that they were too busy onboarding Jenifer Aniston and lost focus in the process.

Also don’t forget pinned items in iCloud Drive (ability to keep certain files saved locally on iOS).

early in the betas it seemed like there was some major change under the hood for iCloud Drive that these features were based on which they had to roll back.
That’s putting it very lightly. In the early betas it completely deleted people‘s data on accident, and made multiple copies of folders and files. It was a total disaster. “Documents by Readdle” app really messed my iCloud up and thankfully anything that was important was saved to external drives. In my iCloud Drive folder I had two Documents folders. One was the regular Mac Documents folder and the other was Readdle‘s Document folder. Why Apple ever allowed their app to show the same name as a system folder I will never understand. Then both Documents folders started sprouting Documents 2, Documents 3 ... 4, 5, 6, ... 20 folders. It’s insane that a simple feature such as “make sure this folder is always downloaded to every device” and “share this whole folder with someone” would be so complicated. What happened was Apple decided to create a whole new iCloud from scratch instead of bolting on new features to existing iCloud. As we’ve seen with the whole iOS release schedule being out of whack for iPhone, iPad, aTV, (still no S2 watch, HomePod), MacOS, one wonders what the hell is going on at Apple.

I use this feature in Dropbox land all the time.

I wonder if there are privacy concerns? Imagine if malware got onto your Mac and started creating these links without your knowledge? Suddenly hackers could be receiving access on their Macs containing all of your files, with iCloud as the host.

I'm calling it now:

Next year's macOS release will be "macOS Avalon", named after the primary city of Catalina (not the Roxy Music album), and, in the spirit of Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion, El Capitan, and High Sierra, will be a mostly-cleanup release.

I wonder if there are privacy concerns? Imagine if malware got onto your Mac and started creating these links without your knowledge?

I also see there being abuse concerns. Say somebody shares pirated or otherwise illegal content. Now you need to have people handle the takedown process. What happens if somebody is cheap and uses the service to distribute multi-gigabyte software? Now you got to design a quota policy and a system to track.

Back in the "good old days" I had many system crashes a day. We currently live in a kind of heaven compared to that; my system is rock solid.

People are either too young or too nostalgic to remember how bad things were.
