They need more spirit of Woz and less spirit of Jobs.
I say they need more spirit of Jobs and less spirit of Cook. Apple needs to go back to Jobs' philosophy of focusing on the customer experience and creating the best products and not on shareholder experience.

Confounding is right, as it would have been *so easy* for Apple to nail this product. Interchangeable stand options? That should be a given. Everyone has that, even at bargain-basement price points. Height adjustment? Obviously needs to be standard, and that would have been a huge selling point. Removable power cord? Of course, and the magnetic power cord attachment from the 24" iMac was the perfect template for this. (It also means some people would buy extra power cords!)

And that's all without even mentioning the picture quality and webcam quality issues some are raising.

Right because Jobs never shipped products that were faulty or had bugs.

Apple is just following Tesla's lead in ship now fix later. I have a Tesla so when I get my Studio Display I will just wait for Apple to fix it... I am used to it.

My Studio Display appears to be shipping from a warehouse in the US, rather than directly from China. My hunch is that the displays were pushed out to the warehouses early, and as a result, did not get the final software.

It doesn’t bother me much — I have no shortage of devices with webcams — but it’s going to upset a lot of customers because Apple highlighted that feature so prominently.

Ok so I’ve watched the videos and don’t see what the problem is. Looks like it’s the same camera and implementation as what’s on my iPad Pro which is fine. I use it regularly with no problems at all.

Turn the light on in your dungeon and it’ll all be fine.

Did they run the initial update ? Dave2D showed there was already one update... See his video, 7:43min

Any updates on the horrible webcam on my 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max system? This camera is terrible - while my older 2019 15" MacBook Pro i7 looks so much crisper!

I had read at some point that there was supposed to be an update to fix this camera - anyone know? My camera looks like there is a film over the lease or a fingerprint smudge - terrible - I started using an external camera because of it.

Nobody in their right mind buys 1.0 Apple products.

I have made it my goal to not buy any Apple Silicon until the next generation. I have the luxury of waiting.

Haven't heard of any updates, but I agree the webcam on the 16" MacBook Pro is not very good, despite the upgrade to 1080p. So far the best Mac webcam I've seen is on the 24" iMac. Crazy that an entry-level device seems to have figured it out while these others play catch-up...

My initial reaction was like that of many others - too little in features/spec for the money

Then I went looking for a 5Kx2K monitor that has a 600nits panel and has HDR and 120Hz refresh. Yeah.... good luck with that... for anything remotely close in price I found a 60Hz refresh, HDR-ish and 500 nits - from LG.

The next best I found was similar but 350 nits.

Now, do I need 600 nits, full blown/true HDR and 120Hz refresh?

Well, I do video and photography work - the stills work is astrophotography where it matters some to have something approximating to HDR and a good colour gamut. But 120Hz? Nope. 60Hz is fine for stills and also my video work.

Do I need 600nits? I'm indoors with this, I have pretty good lighting set-up in my study/office/studio, so probably not, but 350nits is too low.

That leaves me looking at around a $250 premium between the LG one I found, and the Apple Studio monitor. The Apple monitor has a far better stand in terms of study/solid. But I'm not working in an earthquake zone or on a wobbly desk... Oh, and the other monitors in the running don't have speakers and a webcam built in. So I'd have to replicate my current set-up - a web cam plus wires and a set of speakers plus wires... Now that $250 premium for me is looking like a much smaller premium in $ terms, and a big plus from a wiring/aesthetics/clear desk area and being in the right frame of mind what I'm doing my thing...

Hmmm... I set out to justify my agreement with the unhappy & disappointed on this thread, and now find myself seriously thinking about selling my current monitor to part-fund the purchase of the new Apple monitor.

Go figure!!

To this thought, I saw someone else point out that Apple's camera qualities are almost directly proportional to the thickness of the device. Apple clearly understands good cameras for their phones, so there has to be physical constraints with the webcams and being able to fit decent sensors into the thinner profiles. The iMac is the thickest computer currently (where the webcam is located, anyway) so it has the best-looking camera.

It became quite frequent that apple release hardware without optimizing the necessary software beforehand, like the 120 hz on Safari on the latest MBP. Really think they need to step up their game for software, because on the long run, this is hurting their image

This display unfortunately looks more and more like a half-baked, rushed product
Well, the employees responsible for testing were busy insisting on working from home, whereas the prototype display was in the labs at Apple Park… ?
