Yes, on the YouTube video they showed that it permanently damaged the camera. Because it did permanently damage the camera.

So again, how are you sure it's going to be fine after a software update? There are still conflicting sources as to what the cause is in the first place, so I wouldn't be telling people you're sure it'll be fine after an update. Your wishful thinking wants for it to be fine after an update, but anyone who has experienced the issue, your phone is inside the 14 day return window. Return it.
Why would we return a phone that doesn’t have damage and hasn’t shown the issue again at all.

They had knowing damage on their camera. It kept doing it. Better wait for the update and see if it fixes it for anyone that has continued to get it.

I haven’t gotten it again so why return it in my case.

Your whole question is wrong. You don't know that it doesn't have damage. The camera is not supposed to do what it did, and you have no idea if that's going to cause issues 2 weeks or 6 months down the line. Your photo quality might slowly reduce over time until it finally becomes bad enough for you to notice.

I'm not a charity for Apple. When you pay that much money for a phone, and it's less than a week into the return window, may as well put the problem back on them and get a phone you know isn't already damaged. It's not like Apple won't let you return it either.

Ultimately I think you want to believe so hard that your own phone isn't damaged, that you're trying to convince others to hold on to possibly damaged phones for no good reason. Again I say, if you're reading this and you experienced the issue, you should probably return your phone and buy another one.

I understand what you mean. I do. But one incident for a few seconds would unlikely cause damage. Even the support page from apple that says long term motorcycle use will eventually ruin the camera. It’s long term. The people who have made videos of damage let it go on for minutes upon minutes. Of course those are broken it kept doing it and continued too. Someone who had it once and not again even if trying to in third party apps. Shouldn’t have to go through getting another phone. If the one you get has the hardware issue again. It’s under warranty for a year anyway.

Everyone should do what they feel is comfortable. I’ll also be curious to see after the patch if the same people continue to have the issue.

I don’t know if anyone that had the issue continuously besides the YouTubers

I brought my phone to the Apple Store yesterday, they said this camera sound is normal, and it will be fixed after next week's update. it was really funny that this normal sound was amazing for all of them, the technician took my phone to his colleagues and they were all surprised about it. And once again all of them said it is normal :)

There is no iPhone 14 pro max available in any of the stores nearby, but I will return my phone by sure. I didn't pay 1879 euros for this faulty camera!!

Did you have it continuously on third apps

Unfortunately yes. The first time I experienced this situation was with TikTok, after that I tried to use the camera app and everything was normal, and when I came back to TikTok the camera was doing fine.
I closed all apps from the home screen, restarted the phone, and opened TikTok again, I had the same issue as before, the camera was vibrating...

So def a software issue. I opened tik tok and it opened to the back camera right away and it was fine no jittering. Then I went to the front camera and then back to the back camera and it did the jittering.

So Idgi

If it’s a software issue then it must affect all iPhone 14 Pro users. These intense vibrations even if only seconds long, can damage the small electronic parts inside the module. Better exchange it and claim warranty than be sorry when the exchange window already passed. It‘s a 1100$ or here in EU 1400€ phone just can‘t risk it. You will not run out of stocks if you do it asap.

Cite your data where it states that this actually was physically affecting anything or explain why your post is not pure histrionics. Even this write up goes to great lengths not to claim that.
I love these ridiculous "cite your data/source!" type of responses.... Clearly, this is about common sense and knowing a little bit of general knowledge about how these things work.

Image stabilization motors see wear and tear like anything else mechanical, for starters. Apple already had to put out a lengthy bulletin to stop owners of iPhone 13 Pro's from driving around with them clipped to motorcycle handlebars because the strong vibrations from the engine are enough to prematurely wear and damage the image stabilizer system on those.

If the lens stabilizer is vibrating SO strongly, you feel the entire phone vibrating? Something's gone horribly wrong, because this is a little tiny motor that's made just to make slight movements to the LENS in the camera part of the phone! I would want to exchange mine out if it did this even one time. (Apple hopes not to have to do that and would rather wait and see how many break prematurely over the next year or two of use, rather than replace them all proactively. That's just "cost reduction" for them.) I'm not spending the >$1000 price for one of these high-end phones to be a test subject for Apple of "I wonder how many of those stabilizer motors will keep working after over-stressing them 100x or so more than they're designed for?"

I don’t think that’s how software updates work. Have you always had every bug s software update fixes?

I agree with what your saying but the motorcycle disclaimer is from long time use on a motorcycle.

Did anyone experience this issue on iOS 16.0 or was it only on iOS 16.0.1 and 16.1 Beta 2? I received my phone last Friday but I haven’t opened the box yet. I just want to know what to do if I decide to open it before the update gets pushed. I am not feeling like updating to 16.0.1 tbh if that is the case.

I only have it on 16.01. But the iPhone 14 requires update to .01 for other bugs. Idk about the beta.

I think it effects everyone

This is frustrating - along with the less serious USB "2" (in 2022) and plastic square to fill the SIM card slot - that could have held something more useful #lastminutedecision #getitoutthedoor #itsseptember

Mine comes Monday (they say) and ATM I'm anticipating returning it - but not until near the end of the return window. It's a significant upgrade for me and I was looking forward to it. But I buy every 3 or 4 years and anticipate this and the other two dislikes mentioned above might be resolved next year. #$1600hurts

My questions for the group: Since presumably SOME people are not seeing the problem at all, I'm wondering if there's any way to test it without actually fully activating my cell service on it - then having to revert if I decide to return it. Although I have read that moving eSIM from phone-to-phone is super simple. Hence I'm considering converting my XS Max to eSIM just because.

I don’t think I need to update. I’d rather deal with random FaceTime and iMessage bugs. Even eSIM activation issues than break the camera to be honest.

I just wouldn’t use it on third part apps. To me if apple knew it was causing damage they release an update faster than a week. Why not save themselves from all these users having camera issues down the line.

They done rush release updates before.

But if you don’t need to update that makes sense too

I have no intention to use any of these social apps. Never did and no intentions to do all of a sudden. I am a more of a reddit/Discord guy. Some Facebook browsing every now and then and that’s it. No camera access to any app.

I still worry some other apps may be affected and cause damage though. Someone reported Chase UK app for example so you just never know what could cause it.

I decided to stay on the build it came with. All good so far. iMessage and FaceTime failed a few times but ended up working fine. Apple Pay isn’t working at all though. Keeps reporting credit card as invalid. Raised a ticket with my bank and they’ll get back to me once they investigate.

It was me that had issues with Chase UK and heard a couple of other bank issues too.

For what it’s worth I did update to 16.0.1 but can’t remember if my first encounter was prior to that or not

Yes, yes—of course, we'll let everyone know that their devices need to be repaired because we love having to perform thousands of free repairs/device swaps and inflate our refurbished inventory.

While a repair may not be necessary, this is like buying a "new" car that has 50,000 miles on the engine already. If this issue has happened to you, your camera's IBIS system has been stressed far beyond what it would have been, and you should go in and try to get a replacement as soon as possible.
How certain are you of your claim that the camera's IBIS system has been stressed far beyond what it would have been without this bug?

Can you post a link to back this up?

I haven't even received my iPhone 14 Pro Max yet and I'm already stressed because of your post.

Does anyone agree that a workaround to this problem until an iOS update fixes it would be to take the photo with the stock camera app, and then use the third-party app in question to post the photo you just took from the camera roll?

I don't use social media apps at all either, but I have had apps want to scan credit cards or other things on rare occasions. Would be interesting to see if adding a card to the wallet would also have the same issue.

I wish Apple could convince me that their FIX was at a level that prevented the problem from occurring with ANY app going forward.

I was expecting Apple to make a public statement about this camera issue, as most buyers are very concerned now. They should definitely give us details on what is going on, what the fix will do and explain possibility of camera damage.

Like anything else. Apple would have rushed an update if it could have saved them from having to fix damaged phones. They would have disabled ois while fixing it and told people to do it asap. They don’t it before with phone issues. The fact they are taking a week leads me to believe it’s not going to cause permanent damage. Unless you keep filming with it rattling everyday all the time.
