It doesn't matter. They are selling more and that is what is significant. As a shareholder I don't care who buys the phones as long as they are being bought.
It does kind of matter. China launched later last year, so including China in this year's launch numbers means a higher initial number, but probably no more (and maybe fewer) sales over the entire year.

Two people so far in my family are upgrading (besides me). One coming from a 5, another from the 5S. On the last earnings call Apple said the percentage of install base that upgraded to the 6/6 Plus was still pretty low. So I expect a lot of 5/5S/5C owners to upgrade this cycle.

Some. But I bet a lot of the installed base are folks (like my Mom) who are using hand me down phones. Those folks will never buy a top of the line flagship phone. But the well built iPhones floating around for four or more years will continue to expand the base. I've recently sold a iPhone 5 and 5s. Someone out there is using it and enjoying those phones, but if it was the two guys I sold my phones to those guys aren't ever buying a $700 phone. And more power to them for being thrifty.

"Need" & "want" are two very different motivators... as long as Apple keeps cranking out new features (yes, there's a significant amount of new features going from 6 to 6s, IMO) people will keep wanting them.

At some point phone burnout will happen just like PC burnout when people realize they do not need a new phone ever year or two.

Can't wait what the next .....gate will be with this one.
This picture will be a stock wallpaper and it'll be a GatesGate.

Since when do people buy things solely based on need? I know two people who told me this weekend that they're going with Apple's upgrade program. I think Apple will be able to entice people to upgrade their phone each year and they'll take those old phones, refurbish them and sell them in emerging markets.

And I think it is easier to stockpile the S cycle phones because form factor and assembly is much more similar to the phones the manufacturers have been producing for a year already.

Yep, there are several reasons for that. Cycle times and production setup times are shorter, down times is lower, and scrap is less. Common components are available in larger quantities, and production has likely started sooner.

I see your point but you can't really say that when the market is very much moving. There are several things happening: Apple is rapidly expanding in China, so they will be able to reach more consumers this year. Another factor is the devaluation of the Renminbi, which makes the Phone quite a bit more expensive, which will have its effect on sales too.

So, with that in mind it is probably very difficult to explain what will happen in China and I take this announcement as a very positive sign for sales.

Totally agree. But it took over 30 years for the PC industry to start seeing year over year decreases in unit sales. I believe this just started to happen a few years ago. We are still in a situation where folks are transitioning from regular cellphones to smartphones. So the market in general is still growing. And even a well made smartphone is not going to be satisfactory to a sophisticated and affluent user three years after its release. The tech is just at a point in its curve where it is improving too quickly.

Huh? The weekend ended already, it either beat last year's numbers or it didn't. What on earth is "on pace"?!

Says why in OP:
Phone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus pre-orders started on a Friday at 12:01 AM* Pacific last year, which likely explains why Apple said pre-orders are "on pace" to top last year's first weekend despite it being Monday. Apple will likely count iPhone 6s and 6s Plus pre-orders through the end of today to account for a full three days of availability.

*(So effectively very late Thursday for some people) Whereas this year it was late Friday night/Saturday morning.

So they are counting in that extra day before giving full numbers.

China's inclusion is hugely significant - most Wall St. analysts were predicting lower sales because of China's economy and "ambivalence" to the update. The stock was down on Friday. This proves them wrong! We don't know the sales breakdown by country - but my guess is China's sales were huge. And China's economic problems won't affect Apple's sales. https://www.macrumors.com/2015/08/11/iphone-6s-could-face-negative/

Makes me sad to think that half of those preordered iPhones will be on YouTube and other video sites being destroyed. Well ok maybe not half, but some of those iPhones may they R.I.P.

Why not wait till they have the definite numbers instead of 'on pace'? I think the management at Apple worry too much about the stock price and that's not a good sign.

Doesn't surprise me at all. I'm keeping my 6 from last year and getting a 6s+ with T-Mobile JOD. It's not just the 4S, 5 and 5S users upgrading. Many who bought the 6 are upgrading to the new phones. In some cases to the Plus in a larger capacity. I'm going from 16gb to 64gb. Will never get a 16gb phone again.

I have one friend who wasn't planning on upgrading. When he saw the moving fish on the iPhone screen during the reveal, he immediately changed his mind. Funny I know, but it is a perfect example of why Apple will continue to sell iPhones in large quantities for years to come. Wall Street and many individuals don't get it. Tons of people are simply addicted to Apple gear. It may be totally irrational, but we are human after all.

Most people who got the iPhone 6 last year are tied into a two year contract.
Do we have any figures about the number of people who tried one of the carrier's "lease" type options like AT&T Next versus people just beginning a new 2 year contract? (or just buying contract free phones)

I won't lie, I'm a little surprised. I figured the larger screen of the 6/6 Plus would capture far more demand than 4K video and 3D touch, but I'm glad.
There are a lot of people (like me) who did not get the 6/6 Plus and are upgrading from 5s or older to a 6s/6s Plus.

How are that many people preordering? Since everyone pretty much bought an iPhone 6 I would have expected people to not bother this year. Seems to me that the U.S. Economy is doing good despite the news. That or people like being in debt

10 million units at average profit of $300, $3 billion in two weeks! (until sep/25th - I think that is what apple means)

apple is printing money (and on the way taking out other companies and jobs as well)

it means exactly what it says. the first weekend of sales has NOT happened yet. they are talking about the first weekend of sales starting Sep 25 not first weekend of preorders starting Sep 12. This will include physical store sales numbers and not just preorders which they didn't reveal this time around. last year the first weekend of actual sales (starting Sep 22) was 10 million. This is what they are comparing to.

Yeah.. about 4-5millions will be destroyed for YouTube. Well.. Ok maybe not 4-5millions, but 1million iPhone..

Wonder how many people sold their body parts to buy it.

Hope that Chinese kid who sold his kidney in 2012 to buy an iPad and iPhone can still upgrade it to the latest iOS....

Just wow...seriously??? I hope he's alive!

That's really sad when you think about it!
