Apple Says iPhone X is Now Obsolete

Apple today added the iPhone X and the 2018 model of the 15-inch MacBook Pro to its obsolete products list, according to an updated support document.

Released in November 2017, the iPhone X was the first iPhone with an OLED display and Face ID. The lack of a Touch ID home button resulted in the device having a more edge-to-edge screen with a notch for the front camera and Face ID sensors. The device featured a premium design with a glass back and a stainless steel frame.

When an iPhone becomes obsolete, it is no longer eligible for repairs or other hardware service at Apple Stores or Apple Authorized Service Providers.

Apple considers a product to be obsolete once seven years have passed since it stopped distributing the product. Apple stopped selling the iPhone X in September 2018, but the device remained available at select resellers for longer.

iOS 16 was the final major software version compatible with the iPhone X.

It's almost 9 years from the public release.

I read somewhere (and I somehow believe) that the iPhone X was launched earlier (launch was rushed) so as to not be overshadowed by Samsung S8 and S8+ back in 2017.

If not for iPhone X, 2017 would have been a repeat of 2014 to 2016, not counting iPhone SE 2016
 
Bought one and returned it for an iPhone 8 Plus. The screen was too small.

Now the iPhone XS Max felt like the true release.
 
I had a Xs, and I miss it very much. Mostly for the size and the lack of a ridiculous camera bump. I have never liked the 14 Pro I currently have as much.

Agreed, not so sure about the new watchOS27 changes though.

At the time I wasn’t really sold on the iPhone X, but looking back I think it was great.
 
I'll never forget how offended I was by this iPhone. That stupid notch, Apple abandoning Touch ID, and no more home button. I bought the 8+ as a protest to the iPhone X. Now I have a 15 Pro Max, and I tolerate the Dynamic Island, I love FaceID, and I don't miss having a home button. Also, this article makes me feel old.

i've moved on many times since, but the X is still perfectly serviceable for a lot of people. apple is better than many other handset manufacturers, and I understand they want to make money so they cut off these devices from IOS updates. I still wish they would at least allow older handsets like these to get app updates to important things like safari and messages to help people who are on hard times and can't afford a newer device stay secure with working web access. Those apps don't need much power or AI to operate. Even if it was just to keep these things out of a landfill it would be a nice nod to the customer.

Yeah i was the same, did not move to this form factor until the 12 Mini, then got PWM headaches from the OLED screen!
 
Interesting. I happened to be on the Apple Store app last night and noticed they were offering up to $60 if I traded in my X. I’ll have to see if that’s still true.

I'm one of those weirdos that would still prefer TouchID and the home button come back. I feel like the phone has been more frustrating to use since FaceID and the UI change of a swipe up instead of a home button press. The bigger screen is nice, but I don't feel the trade-off was worth it. I also don't mind the Dynamic Island.

Looks way more high end then the cheap looking and feeling iPhone 17 Pro.
