The reason I had a Nexus is that I had an Android phone as a backup phone. The reason I was complaining about my iPhone 6+ is that a software update throttled iPhones with old batteries. I don't believe I was aware of that at the time.

Many phones make it to landfills (or ideally electronic recycling centers) but very few of those are because Apple obsoleted them. If someone is using a ten year old phone they have already accepted it not doing what the newest phones can do or they would have already sold/traded such a phone. For those that can accept not having a much newer phone (perhaps still used and a few years old, but newer than this phone) not being able to get the next iOS is far from a big problem.

Eye-strain while using iPhone X and up

I do wish this wasn’t the case. I can’t use a modern iPhone without perceiving its flickering and having persistent side effects as a result.

Of course, a majority of users don’t seem to be directly affected if they are able to use the device without headaches.

Although the iPhone X had was partially a technological step forward (due to having higher resolution screens with higher color accuracy), it was also a technological step backward (due to having rounded screen corners instead of 90-degree corners, a notch, a lack of a home button, a lack of Touch ID, and an increase in problems for many people with PWM sensitivity).

The iPhone X is a good example of how Tim Cook failed to do what Steve Jobs did as CEO, which is to keep Jony Ive's worst tendencies in check and let his best tendencies flourish. When it comes to CEO-related tasks, aside from bean counting and pleasing shareholders, Cook is clueless and mediocre in everything that made Apple Apple.

By the way, let me try to preempt the knee-jerk responses from Cook supporters who will say that Touch ID was unnecessary because the iPhone X had Face ID, and Face ID was created to replace Touch ID. Really? Is that why after the iPhone X was released, Apple (rightfully) expanded Touch ID in their iPad line, their laptop line, their desktop line, and their standalone keyboard line?

Apple could've included Touch ID in addition to Face ID in order to give users a choice between which to use. Likewise, Apple could've included a home button to give users a choice between using it or swipe gestures. That's very simple logic, but even that is too complicated for someone as clueless and mediocre as Cook.

As far as being a good vs bad decision by Apple to remove touch ID, user views are clearly mixed, BUT it seems clear to me that the vast majority are on the side of favoring face ID. For me and I suspect others the biggest reason for this is that the touch ID took up valuable space. It meant that either the phone had to be bigger or the display smaller. Other devices didn't have the same space issue and in some cases Face ID wouldn't work well because the DEPTH/THICKNESS of the display wasn't enough to support current Face ID modules.

Honestly it was the last phone which felt like real upgrade. Rest of the later releases have felt more gimmicky (Looking at static island). Granted we have more speed and infinite cameras but it was last phone that was really exciting. Definitely had "X" factor.

I have fond memories of the iPhone X launch. I was first in line for it at my local Apple Store. Picked up Space Grey for me and Silver for my wife. Flew out from the UK to NY the next day and I felt like the bees knees 🤣 brought the Apple Olive Silicone case and matching watch band from Apple World Trade Centre. Good old days 🥹

My second favorite iPhone and the first iPhone I kept as my main device for more than 2 years. I used the X for just shy of 6 years and besides the need for a battery replacement after 3 years, it never had one issue.
 
i still daily drive this iPhone (on iOS 15), it's the perfect device for me and i dont think i can upgrade from it, there's really no other iPhone that hits the same spot, the Air is the closest, but it's too big to me, i wish there were more 5.8" iPhones
 
IMO it should have been more obsolete quickly than now

A11 SoC despite it being better than the A10 was nowhereeeee near good as the A10X which was released before the A11 and has still survived to this day with tvOS 26 for the 1st gen 4K one.

iPhone X/8+ and even the 8 should have had iOS 26 ( especially since tvOS 26 supports the A8/2GB RAM TV HD) instead of being stuck on iOS 16 but the fact that even the 7th gen iPad got iOS 18 with its A10 and A11 ones only getting iOS 16 was a slap in the face for those who bought the expensive iPhone X over that cheap base iPad for even less support

You could find a used 11 Pro. Basically the same thing but still supported.
