Apple Says It's Out of the Standalone Display Business

So much debate on form factor and brand. To me, it comes down to OS. I could give two ***** if Joe from alabama built me a laptop from spare wood. If it can legitametly run Mac OS, and has a GREAT trackpad, I'll take it. Screw Hackintosh and the crap drivers.

This bring me to my prediction. I BET Apple will start to liscence the OS.

Something Apple and Steve Jobs used to care about and even champion. But as with all things Apple, WE the customer are the problem because we expect it to be as good as it used to be. How dare we have such lofty expectations? It's unreasonable for us to expect Apple to do as good a job as they used to.

they didn't use to do it. Steve Job FORCED them to work hard and directed them. Jony Ive is very lazy as well as Tim Crook. They can only work well when they report to a boss. When left alone all they think is being in the SPOTLIGHT and are a disaster!

There's more to axing the displays than just saving money. Look at all the 'dozens' of research facilities they've set up around the world. Those things make zero profit and are a huge drain. In the billions and billions.
No, axing the display is the beginning of the end. The mini is next. The pro to follow.

He was right!

Tim Cook 1 year ago: We are dropping our desktop models!
Guy runs into Tim Cooks office a few days ago: Omg, did you see that ad for the Microsoft Surface Studio?
Tim Cook: **** me!

That surface video is literally the most inspirational tech based promo I've seen in a long time. If I wasnt concerned about personal privacy I'd be on W10 tomorrow after seeing that. It's a shame as just 5 years ago Apple were the ones making inspiring computer products and software.

I suspect more products being dropped. The next one could be routers. At some point others who are dedicated to a product category are more invested. Especially if the product category is one Apple sees very little chance of changing or competing effectively in.

They make displays for iMacs, laptops, iPhones, iPads and watches. What's the big deal in creating an iMac without the computing components and put an Apple logo on it?

LOL so you wanna pay a premium for the Apple logo that a third party made for them instead of just buying from them?

watch: Apple will be sold very soon

Tim Crook is not able to run a company

As a lot of people don't like Tim..Who's going to buy them for what price?

They tried that before and then Steve stepped in and stopped.....Oh..wait...

Considering a lot of quality AC Routers trump the Airport Extreme, I'd go along with your theory. Actually, I thought they stopped selling the Airports.

Yep - Also, no eye fatigue. The back light is super easy on the eyes.

Using one right now! Still looks great and as you said, easy on the eyes.

It pains me to remember and I'm sure there is even more.

DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Color, Final Cut Server, LiveType, Cinema Tools.

Pro Apps are mostly EOL'd.

Very disappointing, I don't want some ugly plastic LG display (no matter how nice the panel) sitting on my desk amidst all of my much nicer Apple stuff. And hell, at $1300, it has the Apple tax to boot. The stand on that LG one has got to be the most uninspired design I've ever seen, it looks like some heavy iron thing that you'd find in your garage, like a bike work stand base or something.

Guess it's a good thing I've been hanging onto my 24" LED ACD all these years. I was happy to pay $900 for this. I wouldn't pay that much for LG anything.
fugly indeed

Honestly let LG makes some cool Thunderbolt displays that will also work with Windows PCs. There is no need for Apple to make standalone displays.

It does seem to emphasize that Apple is basically iPhone Corporation these days. Their commitment to Mac is very wafer-thin at this point. Only as much as is needed to feed iOS devs.

Being fair i'd almost kill for that monitor i'm on windows right now on a viewsonic 22' display 1080.

This is just a rumour from a single source and I just don't believe it. Apple has been waiting for TB3 to release a 4k display and the first Mac with TB3 only came out yesterday. What's worse? Launching your new MBP, touting TB3 as the future WITHOUT a workable solution for an external display, or working with another company to rush a workable solution to market, which would explain the awful appearance of the LG.

I just can't believe Apple could be so short-sighted and cheap. I'm seriously hoping that they were stuck between a rock and a hard place waiting for the technologies necessary to bring the products they were envisioning to market. Hopefully they will learn in the future that if you are always waiting for the next big thing, people will get tired of waiting for your products.

I'm all good with Apple handing off the display business to someone like LG if they offer the same plug and play, as well as the quality we know and expect... I'm still using the my TB C-Display and really have no complaints. Good for Apple for continuing the trend to move to the future.

I will say I'm a little worried and definitely surprised that Apple did not update the desktop lines (MacPro, MacMini, iMac). It seems that processors, graphics, and memory have hit somewhat of a plateau compared to the previous decades yearly updates. That said, I would have loved to see some sort of updates for desktops including faster, bigger machines, but more importantly implementing the new TB/USB standards and definitely a desktop keyboard adding the functionality of the new MacBooks touchbar.
