Yea i get that, it's the use of the word "pro" for the iMac that has me interested, are we going to see higher configurations or maybe a brand new design. I will say one thing, it seems like they have been listening to what the pro market have been saying over the last few months.
Unlike Microsoft and many others, Apple actually does listen.

RIP Mac Mini :(
Why's that? They said they are still committed to the mini.
[doublepost=1491345739][/doublepost]
i bet they add pencil support.
The Apple Pencil can't work without a touch screen.
[doublepost=1491313315][/doublepost]

Simple, better specs at the same price as the Surface Studio.
The Surface Studio is actually a POS. See:

At least the incessant whining can stop.
But you know it won't...

It's become extremely slow to load and run programs, even simple functions like getting iTunes or Chrome booted up can take 10 minutes.
I also have regular (once a day) crashes of iTunes, Aperture, iMovie, Chrome etc.
Regular (every few days) unprompted reboots, 20-30 minutes to get it to wake up from the Sleep function overnight.

I recently went through the dreaded (I don't know if it's really dreaded, but it sounded good) MacOS update crash bug, where the iMac wouldn't load past a black screen. Finally figured out it was a known issue and followed the steps I found online to get the update to fully load, but I am still having the above issues.
You need to backup and replace your HD. It's spending its life doing retries. Mark my words. Replace that HD NOW while you still can!

Considering that others are outright mocking this announcement and remembering what the recent MacBook upgrades entailed, I think skepticism is an appropriate response to this news until we know details.
You need to find another example. The MacBook Pro refresh was a spectacular update, engineering-wise.

unprecedented announcement from Apple. Looks like the pro-consumers were loud enough and Apple listened - plus competition is heating up from Microsoft. Have to love competition - Apple works best when its under pressure - this is excellent news.

My prediction for the iMac is they add pencil support.

Pencil support would be good.

I have a standard 1TB hard drive, not SSD or Fusion. My understanding was that it's a brutal process to change out hard drives on iMacs, is that not the case?

Let me go see how to take apart a iMac 2013, shouldn't be too hard. Worst thing is Adhesive I feel like.

For me to consider an iMac, it would need replaceable GPU and possibly CPU. I just can't bring myself to spend those sort of dollars on something that has no upgrade-ability. It's a great computer otherwise, just not very green or future proof.

There you are. You can all shut up now.

Why do you think Apple focus a lot on iPhone? Oh yeah, because it makes up the majority of their revenue. Why would they focus on something like the iMac?
Did you know that you need a Mac to develop iOS apps? Apple needs developers to buy Macs. If the developers don't buy Macs there won't be any iOS apps anymore.

I didnt know iMacs ran on batteries.

The excuse you gave for not using Nvidia (power efficiency) does not line up with reality (imacs don't run on batteries)
Do you know what TDP stands for? It means Thermal Design Power. Wikipedia says: "The thermal design power (TDP), sometimes called thermal design point, is the maximum amount of heat generated by a computer chip or component (often the CPU or GPU) that the cooling system in a computer is designed to dissipate in typical operation."
That means you can't put any amount of TDP into an iMac. The iMacs form factor is limited to a specific TDP. So lets assume that the iMac wont get thicker the new design will still be constrained by a TDP that will not be higher as the TDP of the current iMac.

In other words...

Apple: please don't run out and buy a Surface Studio...thx.

That machine is a super serious threat to Apple's creative base.

Serious question
What is so amazeballs about a Mac Mini strapped to a high res screen that causes the system to chug, along with a stylus that is not as good as the Apple Pencil, and costs $4,000 for a good configuration? We have one here in the office, it seems very half baked.

Like @DaveOP already said: The Surface Studio is an overpriced underpowered computer with a nice design and a seemingly futuristic feature (a very big touchscreen). Not everything gets better with a touchscreen. For example a bicycle computer or an enormous touchscreen. I believe the productivity of such a big touchscreen would be worse. I would need to do additional arm training for all that arm waving all day long.

I really hope they get their act together. A CPU/GPU bump is not going to cut it with the kind of competition they are seeing now, especially in the AIO space from other manufacturers like HP, who are now offering massive 32" systems with sound bars, i5 CPU, 16GB of RAM, all for $1799.

My nearly 5 year old late 2012 i7 iMac is in sore need of a retina and GPU upgrade but if it's another incremental yawn fest from Apple it might finally be time to jump ship.

Would love to see tech specs divorced from screen size (on both iMacs and MacBooks). I'm not a big monitor kinda guy, and in my small apartment, for my needs I'd love to have a 21.5" with an i7 and GPU. The 28" version would be a sacrifice. Love the size of my 13" Macbook too, would love to have 32GB RAM and a GPU in that as well.

AMD Ryzen + Vega?

Ryzen would give some serious multithreaded capability for pro applications while still keeping the price down. The Mac Pro would still offer multi CPU options with Intels next generation CPU to maintain a performance advantage when it is eventually released.

Vega should also offer more performance than Pascal cards and be very competitive with nVidia again should Apple want to stick with AMD for the GPU.

I'm hopefully for WWDC. However it will most likely be post iPhone announcement.
[doublepost=1491343891][/doublepost]

Sadly I'm betting on them sticking with AMD. I am hopeful for AMD Vega.

My wrist would get tired very quickly.

Apple cannot afford to release the new iMacs by Christmas. It has to be by late summer or during Fall. If they wait until early 2018, it's too late. They must re-design the iMac lineup and I don't care what Phil says but he's wrong about the touch screen part. My gut tells me the basic iMac will be standard but iMac Pro should have Pencil support ( aka touch screen or first Mac OS system to ever use touch features ).

Second, about your wrist being tired quickly, I'm an artist and have been using an inclined drafting desk for YEARS. Back in the day, I sat down on a drawing bench while holding the board up to draw a live model from 9am til 3pm ( 2 hour break in between at noon ). My wrist didn't tire. You do NOT draw from your wrist but from your arm or shoulder. The wrist part is for the smaller details or strokes. Especially if you use the large 27 inch Cintiqs, professional artists do not use it vertically. Apple's views on 'gorilla arms' is BS. You recline the screen so you can rest the arm or hand on it while writing/drawing.

And the Surface Studio design of having the screen tilt like a drafting desk IS the right approach, regardless how underpowered it may be. Microsoft had the right idea. And wait until they come out with a new version of the Surface Studio 2.0 which may get cheaper and refined. In fact, Wacom teamed up with MS to design new digitizing styluses for the Surface machines.

I use iPad Pro with Pencil and think it works great but when it comes to high end digital art and design work, the desktop is the way to go. You gotta go full out " Optimus Prime " in a truck to get the job done, not a lightweight Yugo.

Yeah, really.

I just went to a client's house the other day and worked on his 2007 iMac and his wife's 2010 Mac mini. Both are still rockin' every day. The iMac's display is getting a little dim, and a few years ago we replaced the HDD; but other than that, both have been working fine.

Even if I agree that the computer works fine, you still won't get security fixes that are very important. If you value savings over security, it's a personal choice.

Cheers

OMG! a WHOLE year and a half!!! How can anyone stand it?!?

Sheesh!

Sarcasm duly noted.

Patenting is not the same as producing. I'm not a Win guy but the Suface Studio is something Apple should have pushed out before MS. It use to be that MS pushed out boring stuff for accountants and Apple made the cool stuff. Saying Apple thought of the idea first is like saying the Falcons won 3 out of 4 quarters of a Super Bowl. It's about the end game.

What pros are they thinking of? For me, it means a good video card, lots of ram for VMs and enough storage to keep said VMs around forever. That may happen. But I also want a machine that does NOT thermal throttle and does NOT go into vacuum cleaner mode on a 40 minute compile, or in games. I don't think they can do that in the iMac form factor...

Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller and software engineering chief Craig Federighi have confirmed that Apple is working on new iMac models that the company expects to launch later "this year," as reported by TechCrunch.

[XXXX]

Apple did not share specific details about what to expect from the refresh, but Thunderbolt 3 ports and faster processors are likely at the very least. At least one model will reportedly have the option for a new and likely faster AMD graphics chip, but few other iMac rumors have surfaced to date.

Federighi thinks the new iMac models will address "even more of the pro market," as noted by Daring Fireball:Apple last updated the iMac in October 2015, a span of 539 days, according to the MacRumors Buyer's Guide.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said he expected new iMac models to launch in the mid first half of this year, but that timeline appears to be inaccurate as we move further into April.

Can they not at least make this thing function as a halfway decent desktop display/monitor for folks who want to be able to schlepp a light laptop and get great views at their desktops? It would be nice to have that "dummy monitor" have a half-decent "dummy brain" inside its head so that guest users could use it (for example).

To me, delivering on that premise/promise seems like something that Apple should totally do as a part is its user-friendly "DNA".

Apple doesn't deal with niche markets, and the surface studio is as niche as they come.

iMac will always be a big screen with laptop components due to form factor and thermal constraints.

I for one, set a limit time that I will wait for the iMac. That is WWDC. After that I think I will not have the patience to wait any longer. I'm waiting for new iMac for nearly 6 months and knowing Apple, we will need to wait another 6 months for new release.

This i not counting the specs and prices the new iMac will have. If the deal doesn't appeal for me, I jump ship and build a affordable Mini-ITX PC build with the same or better specs. I don't really have nothing against Windows 10. Don't see Windows as this as three-eye monster some people in these forums point out.

Riiiiight. The MacPro isn't niche at all, especially the top of the line configuration. Neither is the iPod at this point or even the Mac mini. C'mon. Aside from the iPhone, iMac, and MacBook everything Apple sells is niche.

Please don't let them smell like burnt plastic. The glass used to be held with magnets and it was fine. Now they use tape which heats and smells. And let the machine be thicker and run cooler. They are running super hot inside, and smelling and burning elements.
