Two observations:
1. I think SOMETHING has to be worrying the execs at Apple to make them issue these comments. I don't really remember Apple doing this kind of thing much.

2. These comments are very squishy. No real meat here other than a attempt to reassure customers that they are going to update some Macs.

They did say iMac will be updated later this year

Awesome news, but Phil Schiller and the gang must be pretty desperate for attention of they've resorted to blatantly saying when their products are going to launch now. They're going to put MR out of business haha

I'm impressed. Did Apple ever announce anything in this fashion?

This gives some hope that they understand the gravity for pro customers.

Pro like the MacBook Pro with everything soldered onto the board, still at least theirs hope then that they'll move on from those 5400rpm drives..!!

Sorry for being sceptical but when they like profit first, I'm not filled with confidence... let's hope they can surprise me?

THIS took REAL COURAGE, and I applaud Apple for doing so.
I'm glad they recognized that it's better to lose a few sales today, if it means preventing some customers from leaving forever.
Yeah, their lack of hardware updates is costing them sales and customers.

You look at this as progress, I think Tim has lost touch with the consumers and has a real interest in cutting costs, remember he had an background in manufacturing and cost controls back before Apple. He's really taken this to a new level these days. Apple has refuse to do yearly refreshes for product lines. Consumers need this. Hell, professionals need it.

why exactly has there been no Kaby Lake MBP out now?

why is there no new Kaby Lake Mac mini?
Why has the iMac not been updated to Kaby Lake and new graphics chip?

The industry is delivering products closer to chips release and Apple is running around the track a few laps behind.

This is pretty much confirmation to Apple users that Mac is really not a major focus of the company. sort of a hobby now.

The last time Apple made such a promise, we got a Touch Bar and paid an extra $500

I have an nVidia GTX 780M in my iMac now (late 2013), and I would love an AMD GPU in there because of the better OpenGL drivers and support on macOS.
On Windows it's the other way around.

Here's hoping for at least 8 GB VRAM AMD GPU for my X-Plane needs...
I understand what your saying it's just AMD GPUs are weaker but that maybe resolved with Vulcan coming.

My guess is because they're so behind the ball, no product unveiling will happen until the Fall.
With recent iPads announced online and no April event, there's only WWDC in June.
Way too long to stay silent on the status of Mac hardware.

Ah, it's more clear in there that it's apple that said it.

Yea in the other reports it does seem less clear because they don't quote it fully. When later this year actually means tho I don't know, and the words "Pro" iMac I'm not sure so maybe we will be surprised.

Before everyone gets their hopes up, absolutely nothing is known about what this upgrade means, or how it will compare hardware-wise with other brands of computers.

Apple doesn't think they have to compete with "other brands of computers" because those other brands cannot run macOS. They have failed to grasp that in today's website and online-service driven desktop computing existence, the platform of the machine you use means very little, because you're just going to fire up a web browser, maybe an email client, etc, and do everything in there. So unless you're in love with a web browser or office app that is only available on one platform, you can choose whatever suits your needs hardware-wise and ignore the OS its running.

I have no problems with "later this year". Meanwhile, my money sits in the bank and I collect interest.
My bank doesn't do interest anymore :( and would love to spend it on a new iMac. I really hope it will be a nice redesign because the design is getting long in the tooth. Als make the stand more ergonomic adjustable. I hate to put books under the stand.

It would actually be pretty easy to maintain a slim iMac (or make it a little thicker--it's not a laptop!) and add upgradeability to make it more of a "Pro" machine. Removable hard drive and SSD as well as RAM, (all of which should be removable without taking the machine apart) and MXM or PCIe graphics? Or at the very least full support for a TB3 eGPU. Probably too much to expect, but Steve Jobs isn't running the show anymore. So I can hold out hope!

Read one of the original source articles. They said they had been reading online forums so they were aware of the concerns expressed therein and that was what prompted this interview. And there was some red meat: a fair bit, actually, with respect to the Mac Pro and a definite statement that the iMac would be updated this year.

"Federighi thinks the new iMac models will address "even more of the pro market,"..."

Are we talking about pro features, or pro prices here? The prices for the MacBook Pro and iMac have already increased so much over the last couple of years, that these products are gonna loose a lot of sales.

And why are Apple insisting on using the inferior AMD GPUs, when Nvidia has several killer GPUs available? I thought Apple's philosophy was to use the best products for their computers, but not anymore?

unprecedented announcement from Apple. Looks like the pro-consumers were loud enough and Apple listened - plus competition is heating up from Microsoft. Have to love competition - Apple works best when its under pressure - this is excellent news.

My prediction for the iMac is they add pencil support.

It's a very old tactic in marketing.

When your competition has beat you to market, and you're taking losses, you try to get customers to hold out and save their money to buy your future product instead of the one your competitors have right now.

Sorry to hear. I have really liked mine overall and six years seems like a good run, so I have no complaints other than the lack of a newly-updated machine to upgrade to right now. I'm somewhat tempted to go the MacBook Pro plus external display route so I can buy something now, but I'm trying to be patient.

One thing I have loved that I hope Apple returns in its 2017 iMac is Target Display Mode. I often have to take my work laptop (a Dell running Windows) home, and it's really nice to be able to use my iMac as an external display for that computer. If the "current" iMacs supported that feature, I might not even wait to buy the new one. Fingers crossed.

I have a MacBook Pro that I use for day-to-day stuff, but since I use lots of VMs, I need a fair chunk of RAM. My 2011 iMac is maxed out at 32GB, and until a MacBook can do that, I kinda still need a desktop.

The current iMac offerings are a bit lacking for me, no real upgrade (I have SSDs in raid 0 that can pretty much match disk performance) other than the screen.

I would imagine the next ones will be similar, and I don't have a problem with that - but I *do* have a problem spending current-gen money for previous generation hardware.
