I’m suprised not to see apple pushing additional uses for the other devices a user may own, especially as a camera in every device is kind of a waste. Could have had some interesting options if they just took the camera out the MBP and added magsafe to the laptop lid, allowing an iphone to be fixed in place with magnets and just the camera showing over the lip of the lid, linking automatically to the laptop. Better quality camera I dare say too. Would also solve the issue for those who can’t have a camera in a laptop due to security etc. Could have also then made the phone charge while connected for max convenience… It would seem potentially possible at the expense of a slightly thicker screen.

I’ll be very curious to see how the cursor behaves around the notch, and how longer menus move around it. Hoping I don’t have to go around the notch to use a menu item.

To be fair to Apple here, their explanation makes perfect sense to me and I can view the notch in a different way.

The notch is ok. Being the screen is large it actually gets lost in most things we do
Face ID is the one thing that would have sealed the deal of the notch however Apple is saving that for next year

Some windows laptops have bezels almost as tin and no notch. This gives even more screen real estate and in my opinion looks better.
The webcams in those laptops (ie: the XPS) use tiny sensors to fit in such a small space and the resulting image quality is absolutely terrible. People were already complaining that MacBook Airs/Pros had lousy webcam quality; this would have been a step further backwards. No manufacturers have figured out this problem. Apple’s solution gives us good webcam quality without putting the camera in an odd location (ie: the keyboard) while reducing bezel size.

One error in the notch discussion/coverage is that Dark Mode doesn't change the color of the menu bar, unfortunately. If you want a black menu bar to hide the notch, you need to pick a black desktop background. (Or at least the top of the image needs to be black.)

The exception is if you have Reduce Transparency checked in the Acessibility settings.

Q: why is a notch without FACE ID acceptable to the Apple fan base? Wasn’t this supposed to be the redesign you were waiting for?

No, the notch is ugly AF. Steve Jobs and his infamous reality distortion field might have convinced the public this was good design, but present day Apple lacks those same powers of persuasion.

It looks great? That’s just marketing spin. Because no one was saying “Please put a notch on my computer!”. Or, “I would buy a Macbook, if only it had a notch!”.

that wide notch is so Jessica, Jeff, Jezebel and Jose can see you all the live long days in Monterrey!

People don't like change. they will get used to it [or will have to otherwise PC here we come].
People don't like getting hit in the head with a ballpeen hammer, they will get used to it (or will have to get comfortable with getting stabbed in the foot continuously). ;):p

  • Dongles better than built-in ports
  • Dongle for headphones instead of dedicated 3.5mm jack
  • Having a notch is better than not having one
  • Touch bar better than physical keys
I'm curious to see what other silly notion Apple can foist on consumers. I can't think of anything that Apple could do that wouldn't be received with open arms by the Apple faithful.

It is not the smart way, it is the easy way.
I wouldn't mind 5 mm bezels and keep its normal height to the menubar (the menubar is taller because of the height of the notch). Well, maybe next time…

I think the notch is a great idea. It is functional, gains more screen space in the same physical envelope, and looks good. I think the complainers are just complainers. Maybe looking for media hits for an ad revenue.

There were a few comments about putting the webcam on the chin. I have a Dell Precision laptop for my dayjob with the webcam there. That's the worst idea ever. It makes everyone look horrible on the webcam.

It still looks bloody awful no matter how they or anyone else tries to spin it. It’s an eyesore. Not everyone likes using dark mode to try and ‘hide’ it either.

When you have to resort to using workarounds via software to try and disguise a hardware design decision then that is bad design. End of story.
Truer words were never spoken. I agree people will accept this and we will move on. Doesn’t change the fact that a notch is a horrible design.

This was on Macrumors a day or two ago. The mouse cursor will go "behind" the notch.

Is it possible to have the top menu bar always black (dark mode) but the rest of the system still in white mode? That would make the notch less of an eyesore during regular use. I can manage with a black menu bar but not a black Finder windows.
