iOS 15 has been solid for me on my iPhone XR. There's the occasional hesitation now and then, and some apps are buggy. I frequently have to restart the CNN app because of rendering issues. I peg that on them, though. Developers need to keep their apps updated across OS versions.

Overall, though... it's a solid, reliable version of iOS. Happy with it.

Apple today told Ars Technica that the option to stay on iOS 14 and avoid the iOS 15 upgrade was always meant to be temporary.
Unless Apple is going to force install iOS 15 on us in the background, the ability to stay on iOS 14 is not temporary.

It is not a mistake that there are no more security updates to iOS 14, and support for the update has essentially ended.
So Apple is going to abandon their long tradition of providing security updates to older versions of their iOS just to get people onto iOS 15 so they can force their CSAM garbage on us? Perhaps this is why iOS 15 works on older iPhones such as the 6s/6s Plus and 1st gen SE where prior iOS releases would have abandoned devices of similar age.

Apple and the media used to tout how great iOS was compared to Android because of the long support Apple provided. Gueess that's no longer the case.

How does this compares to a Pixel device, for example?. Shame on Apple!!!!5 years is also temporary.
From Google page:

When you'll get Pixel updates

Pixel 6 & Pixel 6 Pro phones will get Pixel updates for at least 5 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. Pixel updates include Pixel security updates, and may also include feature drops and other software updates.

You're mixing up the meaning of "updates". Pixel 6 will not be getting updates of *the same operating system version* for 5 years. Future Android releases will be supported on the Pixel 6, just the same way that future iOS updates are supported on current devices ... for at least 5 years.

So yes, Apple is supporting devices for many years, across many versions of iOS. Always has been this way.

I'm sure this was always Apple's intention. It seemed odd that they would allow people to stay on iOS 14 forever.

But it’s also odd that they implemented the “choice” UI for effectively just 2-3 months and a single security update. I suspect they didn’t initially know how long they’d keep the option, and then they decided iOS 15 was “good enough” rather quickly, possibly because most users upgraded anyway.

Apple has trained their customers not to trust updates due to low quality releases.

Apple needs to solve the right problem: either deliver high-quality releases or stop the annual cycles.

And honestly, I think the answer is both. Just like customers screamed for years we don’t need thinner and thinner devices at cost of battery and crappy keyboards, we are clearing saying we don’t need marginal features which mostly build the Apple ecosystem at the cost of “it just works"

Someone in power at Apple needs to be reminded that the stickiest part of the ecosystem is “it just works”, not that all Apple devices can do magic things in unison.

And I thought this was one of those rare cases where Apple listened to its customers...
Shame.

I am surprised that people are surprised. Did anyone really think that we would have iOS 14 and iOS 59 at the same time? At most it was going to be a year, but I didn't even expect that long. Apple goal was always csamOS.

Your post started out strong, but bringing CSAM into it... ruined it.

I'm so tapped out with the pointless hamster wheel of annual "upgrades" on iOS/iPadOS

They really should decouple the software releases from the hardware releases and slow it way down on the software side.

I agree, but it's become their marketing machine, as much as I used to deny this myself.

What is the big deal? Upgrades are free. Join the beta program and report bugs.

If the upgrade on your iPhone 4 causes battery drain join the beta program and report it. In the beta program there is regular upgrades.

(I never said "worry and patch up holes" even though Apple does (but is not necessitated to) provide updates for several versions back. Even iOS 12 did receive something a while ago.)

Not quite the same. They only provided the updates for major security holes on devices that don't support current firmware (iPhone 5s, 6/6+, iPad Air, mini 2/3, etc).

iOS 14.8.1 was available on all supported devices despite iOS 15 being available. Still, the extra 2-3 months provided is pretty short. At least 6 months to 1 year would've been better.

Why should Apple worry and patch up holes because people refuse to update? They should put their resources to the current version not one they aren’t on anymore
Older devices run slower with newer iOSs.
Also, the less devices get supported, the less the planet thanks us; and vice versa.

I myself use iOS 6, but all the other devices here are permanently staying with iOS 14 on principle, then. No need for them to have been intentionally misleading about it. Then again, I still think it's quite dumb to insist on having a "major" update every year just because.

Did iOS15 deprecate any models? Usually Apple doesn’t leave old models out in the cold like that. But if 15 runs on all 14 devices, one should consider oneself SOL…

Last time devices were deprecated was from iOS 12 to 13 (dropped support for all iOS devices with 1GB RAM).

Still on 14, no rush to upgrade these days. Probably will start upgrading my devices around June. macOS is worst, still on macOS 11.

Sarcasm on

Oh no I will need to update the OS for free, with pastry’s features and se unity! The world is doomed..

/s

Meanwhile in Android land… ?

If Apple wanted everyone to update, they should not have made iOS 15 such security nightmare with functionality that people don't want or need. CSAM, I'm looking at you.
Easy to bash Apple on a secure approach to CSAM while other just scan your photos. I don’t care but for sure if your child was victim of abuse probably you would care about it.
iOS15 have a lot of cool features like live text.
