I wouldn't be surprised if there's a vulnerability in 14 that for some reason can't be patched out with an update.
More likely Apple does not want to admit it. But my guess is that they have a security letter that they cannot ignore and cannot fulfill without an update.

How does this compares to a Pixel device, for example?. Shame on Apple!!!!5 years is also temporary.
From Google page:

When you'll get Pixel updates

Pixel 6 & Pixel 6 Pro phones will get Pixel updates for at least 5 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. Pixel updates include Pixel security updates, and may also include feature drops and other software updates.
Apple updates your iPhone with more feature, no bloatware, without selling your data, for free, for more years in form of iOS 15, 16, 17…

Easy to bash Apple on a secure approach to CSAM while other just scan your photos. I don’t care but for sure if your child was victim of abuse probably you would care about it.
iOS15 have a lot of cool features like live text.
If my child was the victim of abuse, the first person I would look at would be me, because I decided to expose my child to that person. The responsibility is on the parent.

Of course, the current generation is all about "not my responsibility".

Imagine growing up in a world where the responsibility for whether or not your child is abused is left up to Apple and the police. The police rarely stop anything. Child abuse is not important to the police. Oh, it is important to prosecutors, but only for headlines. We have too much child abuse going on, including in the government, for it to be a police priority. Reality sucks.

So this is just more theoretical nonsense that does not improve anything other that image and does reduce freedoms and privacy.

I would say MacRumors is turning this into more of a story than it really is (although this item has fairly objective reporting), just by going on about it…

If you engage your brain, it’s clear Apple were not talking about the option to use a fully supported iOS 14 in perpetuity.

Or what, would you prefer Apple’s software engineers divided their full attention just so users had a choice for the sake of it? Better to focus on making the current version as good as it can be in the moment.

I’m a parent. And I don’t want my daughter growing up in a world where everyone is tagged as a paedophile-in-waiting.

We are supposed to making the world a better place so I’d rather we upped funding (from zero) into learning what makes child molesters do what they do and reduce the numbers exponentially organically.

Paedos will just avoid vendors using CSAM anyway.

Apple put lipstick on the buggy, not ready to ship, iOS 15 pig by pretending to offer upgrade flexibility.

When it felt iOS 15 was good enough, Apple wiped off the lipstick.

In any case, I’ll repeat my stance - I’m completely done with Apple till it publicly disavows the CSAM idiocy. I won’t be upgrading.

Still on 14, no rush to upgrade these days. Probably will start upgrading my devices around June. macOS is worst, still on macOS 11.
Same, but still on macOS 10.15.7.

I'd roll back to 10.9 (Mavericks) if I could. It's annoying that I have to wait 10 seconds to shut off my Mac after quickly quitting a bunch of apps (Command + Q) to avoid getting "Recovered Files" folders in my Trash and seeing other weird (though temporary) behaviors.

Here's the deal:

You make good major versions that are free from major bugs, properly optimised with well implemented features and I'll be happy to upgrade.

Comparative simplicity of such a scanning golden key is not at issue.

The golden key itself is the issue because once done it won’t stop with CSAM.

Here I was hoping Apple would do an iOS 12.x with iOS 14.x but it seems it was never in their plan all along...

Not all changes they introduce in the newer version are good which is why users tend to stay on the older version...

Without my knowledge or agreement; trickily Apple upgraded my iPhone to IOS 15. I wanted to stay on IOS 14 longer.

Do you have automatic updates enabled? I suspect you did.

(Yes, there are noobs on this site who didn’t know this has to be disabled in order to prevent that from happening.)

iOS 14.x introduced the ability to not auto-download the update and there was also the option to not automatically install the downloaded update introduced several versions ago...

Apple, could you just stop creating major OS releases EVERY year? It has been ok years ago when smartphones developed like crazy - but today, we hardly see and development. The kernel should be stable and bug free. Basic functionality should be rock solid. There is no need for a new major OS release, just because of a different safari or new emojis.
2-3 years is enough for all of your OS. I really miss the goog old days with a slow update cycle. Stability vs gimmicks.

Until they kill CSAM scanning, I’m not upgrading. Bonus, my Safari isn’t leaking my browsing history. That’s a iOS 15 / Monterey feature.

Unless Apple is going to force install iOS 15 on us in the background, the ability to stay on iOS 14 is not temporary.

So Apple is going to abandon their long tradition of providing security updates to older versions of their iOS just to get people onto iOS 15 so they can force their CSAM garbage on us? Perhaps this is why iOS 15 works on older iPhones such as the 6s/6s Plus and 1st gen SE where prior iOS releases would have abandoned devices of similar age.

Apple and the media used to tout how great iOS was compared to Android because of the long support Apple provided. Gueess that's no longer the case.

How do I report the iOS 15 CSAM bug and will Apple fix (i.e. remove) it?

(yes, know CSAM isn't active right now, but it will later down the road)

If Apple wanted everyone to update, they should not have made iOS 15 such security nightmare with functionality that people don't want or need. CSAM, I'm looking at you.

Apple quietly pulls references to its CSAM detection tech after privacy fears

This is pretty much like macOS.
Apple never disclosed the timeline when they will stop releasing security patches to older OS and is very annoying.

This here. And you’re not the only one.

Apple needs a serious ethical adjustment. I wouldn’t be too hopeful though of Apple disavowing it. They have yet to disavow the horrible Exposure Notifications idiocy, another massive failure by cowardly leadership in Cupertino. Apple still owes the world an apology for that, selling fear+segregation and trying to pretend it was any kind of safety/security.

When this company gets back to making technology and stops pushing extreme reactionary socially harmful “safety” schemes, it won’t be too soon. This latest bait and switch on continued iOS 14 security updates is another symptom of serious rot. Now it’s literally pushing misery and just peddling it as benevolence.

Apple’s been a lousy friend to its customers lately. I’m starting to suspect it’s not just bad decisions, but genuinely bad people at the helm.

The whole nature of iOS updates is flawed and has been since the beginning of time. Why? Because it means that the product you buy today will not be the product you own tomorrow. Which is fine, if you like that sort of thing. But what if you like what you have? Why should you feel pressured (or be manipulated via the threat of no more security) to alter it and turn it into something you don't like? Does that happen with vacuum cleaners? Washers and dryers? Shoes? Vinyl records? Guitars? No... it only happens when you buy things that are connected to the internet because we're still in the wild-west when it comes to its regulation, and these massive companies are taking advantage of that laxity. Whether intentional or not, they're sending the message that you that you don't own what you own. They do. And if you don't like it, tough *^$$.

I think this speaks to the bigger picture, Does Tim Cook really know what he's doing ?

I know he can fool some of the so-called Pro Stock Analysts who cover AAPL for a living (e.g., Munster, Ives, Huberty, & Cramer), but he's NOT a products OR services guy, his background is as a Manufacturing Operations Efficiency Specialist.

Perhaps his time is up, OR soon will be.

I agree. His time will be up in 5 years when he is ready to retire. People in 2011 thought Tim would be done by 2012. If history is any indication of the future...
