My original logic board lasted for over 10 months before it said good night - this one started to show artefacts after a few days.. I will obviously have to take it back before it goes all black on me.

It's weird how some people have artefact issues before the chip dies and some don't. I've had two fail and neither had any artefacting whatsoever in OS X or Windows before they died. They just stopped working with no warning.

So are the Penryn 8600 512 MB ones faulty as well??
And has anyone else confirmed that they could actually replace a faulty GPU with a 9600 one??

So my MacBook Pro just bit the dust. It starts and I can hear sounds but the screen is pitch black. I tried removing all connected cables and mutliple restarts but nothing is working.

I assume that my GPU has failed as the computer is using this problematic chip. Tomorrow I will take it in to service, which I understand should be free.

Can anyone whom has experienced this problem tell me do they replace the faulty GPU with another one from the same troubled line? Or do they replace it with a different one that isn't prone to failure. Also how long is the turn around on the repair been?

My brand new (Dec. 4) MacBook Pro just started exhibiting symptoms... slow scrolling, screen artifacts, macro-blocking, system slowness... with both the 9400M and the 9600M GT.

I just called Apple and they want to repair it. I was happy. THIS is a replacement system for an Early 2008 (August) that had all sorts of hardware problems. I'm not shipping it in- I need it for school. I live <100 mi from an Apple Store or an Authorized Repair Center.

I'm going to try Best Buy. Apple said it might work... and the Geek Squad said they could look at it if I brought in proof of warranty.

Sigh.... what happened to Apple's QC?!?!

Hello again.

Well, good fortune as it was for Apple to swap my old MBP with a shiny new unibody MBP a mere 28 days ago, guess what?

Yup - its back!

Same symptoms again :

distorted text when scrolling, particularly in Safari.

white flashes when

- watching Flash video, eg the BBC iPlayer.

- browsing around the ITMS

- mousing over Events in iPhoto.

So yes, Apple seem adament / confident that new boards with 8600 chipsets are OK, but clearly these issues are still present even in the new unibody MBPs.

Of course, that assumes that these symptoms are down to the nVidia chipsets - I'm still confused over the fact that 10.5.5 seemed to fix the old MBP, and the machine apparently passed a test for the nVidia issue.

Either way, whatever is causing these symptons is still present.

I guess its just extremely bad luck to have the same issue with two MBPs, using two different chipset / board combinations a year apart....

Now where's the 9400/9600 thread...

Same EXACT thing happened to me. I received a Unibody replacement on Dec. 4... and now I'm having graphics problems! argh!

FWIW my rev-2 8600GT is still chugging along 2 months later and i constantly 'use' the GPU power...

I havent posted in this thread for a while.

My 2.2GHz 128MB 8600 is still pretty good. I am constantly playing games or editing in Aperture and its still chugging. Hopefully I can keep this baby going. Has Apple been giving people Unibodys for first repair for 8600 failure? I see lots of people getting replacements.

wondering if i should gaming on my mbp..I get a feeling if the gpu dies it'll be 1 day after warranty runs out, how much is it to replace the logic board after warranty? :apple:

All GPUs are prone to failure, it's just a matter of when. Anyway, considering people have had their boards replaced multiple times, same ones I'd assume.

Has anyone successfully had a MBP with faulty 8600 replaced w/ a unibody? I have had one instance where the screen went completely black requiring a reset in order to work properly. Is this an early symptom I should be worried about?

Sort of - I had distorted text and flashes during Flash video playback, mousing over iPhoto events, browsing ITMS etc.

Also a separate gradient issue with the display.

They swapped the display and the logic board, although by that point they'd actually ruled out the nVidia issue.

The new display was faulty, so back it went, and I used all my blagging charm, also mentioning the fact that the lid was far from perfect, and that there was also the slightest hint that some pitting was about to start again.

They argued that 'they're all a bit like that'.

I argued (politely!) that that was unacceptable for top end product from company that prides itself in high standards.

They agree to swap my late 07 MBP with a new unibody MBP.

Although it too is suffering from the distorted text and flashes during Flash video playback, mousing over iPhoto events, browsing ITMS etc.

Not sure how long it'll be symptom free after rebooting yet, and I think I'm up on the deal, so am pretty happy as things currently stand.

NVidia Video

I had my MacBook Pro checked out last Tuesday, and it was verified to have the faulty chip. Crashes had been taking me down to my knees. To the point of a total drive wipe, and a loading of Leopard. NO FIX. So, after much frustration, I took it to the Apple store for a second visit. The Genius, put it on a special testing device, and got the message we were looking for. NVidia is replacing my motherboard as I write. This is great news for me! It will be like a new machine all over again.

Cheers. Hope this helps.

^^SO you had to ship off your macbook to have the board replaced? How long did they say it would be until you got it back?

sudden changes

my 2007 june mbp has suddenly exhibited horizontal lines at least once per week, a higher than usual fan usage and sometimes really really slow dock and expose movement. it is sudden and i guess i may suffer a bit: which is too bad as i need this computer for work. i am sitting, knocking and praying on wood in the meantime

Add me to the list of bad GPU's. I just had to send my two month old Penryn MBP off for a new logic board. So far the replacement seems good. Only time will tell.

BTW, mine was made in the last week of September 08'.

Not sure where you're located, but I had the mlb replaced and it was only a few days from when I dropped it off to when it was delivered at the house. It was actually quite a bit faster than I expected it to be.

Successfully replaced MBP 2.2 with Unibody.

I first posted my experience back in October. This is my update.
https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=6437028#post6437028 Apple did replace the logic board and it worked fine until about Dec 29th. I started having intermittent problems again starting with image tiling, then seemingly random freezes, followed by small horizontal colored stripes going across the screen. It all built up to this past Saturday. I went to the Apple Store in SLC and managed to get the same Genius at the bar as last time. I showed them my screen shots from the first time i was in back in October and then the screen shots i took this past week. They checked my new board and saw it was a rev2 and then decided to run the graphics test for bad boards. It passed the graphics test with no problem. They then decided they wanted to look at something else, so they rebooted my machine and after about 3 seconds on the grey page with the spinney thing, my screen went black. It was all downhill from there. The tech walked away, came back after speaking to a manager and said "I'm guessing you don't want to wait for another repair, so this is the other option". He then placed a base level unibody MBP on the table. He told me Applecare will basically allow them to treat it like an exchange. So, i essentially exchanged a late Model 2007 2.2 for a brand spanking new MBP unibody. I'm a happy camper.

My only gripes are:
1) I have to buy a new applecare warranty in the next year. Ok- i don't have to but given this experience I will.
2) I can't get my darn Express 34 eSata card to work in Vista. I got it working in OSX and from what i've read i'm one of the lucky few.
3) Time machine can be a pain when it comes to apps and the supporting libraries.

Regardless, I'm lucky and grateful that Apple took care of me.

8600's from 07 to Sept 08

I just got a 15" MBP 2.5ghz Penryn with 512vram with a build date in the 3rd week of November 2008. Should this laptop be okay since it was made after September 2008? According to Chipmunk International it's only 2 months old? I thought they started making the new unibodies in October? Where they still making the older bodies too?

I had this exact same issue -- took it into the local Apple Store and they told me it was a faulty 8600 GT. They replaced the logic board with a "rev. 2"...but unfortunately the GPU is still 8600 GT... I'd be very surprised if anyone got a replacement that was not the same card (short of having their machine swapped for a new unibody MBP).

Add me to the list of failures. My Penryn MBP was manufactured in the last week of September, and after two months started having graphics problems. I sent it away for a new logic board and got it back Monday. So far it is fine.

How do I tell if I got a Rev. 2 board put in? My invoice didn't mention anything about it.
