i just had my MLB replaced for the first time to a "rev 2" and im just wondering if this will give out as well.

Probably. Myself and many others had "rev 2" boards that failed in less time than the original boards.

My experiences with the genii and getting a replacement machine can be found somewhere on page 1-60 on this gargantuan thread.

Lol well glad to hear you got a replacement MPB for your old one. i have until september 2011 and my graphics card needs to fail 2 more times to get a replacement....whats my odds right? but speaking of my MLB giving out, after the 4 years will apple still honor the repair for free if i go past september from the time that i purchased my MBP?

When did you buy your MBP? Is that the early 2008 penryn or the 2007 santa rosa? Still under AppleCare?

its a (mid 2007) santarosa and i did not buy apple care. Wouldnt have needed it anyways since the GPU gave out late 2010.

hmmm. Not too sure about replacement then. When I got my 2008 MBP replaced it had been only a few months outside of the included 1 year warranty (I also had Applecare). It had been in for about 4 times previously, two of those being GPU related.

i see well as far as my MBP goes if my MLB gives out again apple might charge me for a repair then huh? (considering its GPU related)

Yes I think the older the box then they are more likely to blame it on other factors (in my experience).

But as far as legitimate claims go Apple has and still is extending the deadline. Who knows when they will actually stop. AFAIK you can still return the faulty powerbook batteries and get a new one. I participated in that recall program as late as two years ago.

In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within four years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty.

My 2008 Penryn MBP is humming along with no problems, which is good.

OTOH, the current extended coverage from Apple is 4 years, so unless they extend it I won't feel safe in a couple of months.

I remember articles stating that basically all GPU's were defective, but I don't know what is the truth. I have no desire to upgrade, this is still a great computer and I am basically 100% happy with it. It would be a shame if the GPU went out due to the defect and Apple won't cover it any longer.

Did anyone bother to check to see who designed the interface between the Nvidia GPU and the rest of the Apple built system?

The 2008 Nvidia problems had nothing to do with Apple. The GPUs themselves were defective and this affected many vendors.
