Just want to add that if one gets a new Rev.2 logic board, then Apple will make sure that the machine will still have the same serial number.
This is a great way for them to be able to tell bald-faced lies like: "This logic board is from a new batch that is problem-free - you just can't see that, due to us changing the serial number back..."

If one brings the computer back, after the new logic board fails, the respons goes like this: "Oh, This has _never_ happened before... Very strange indeed!"

I'm on my second replacement 2.2Ghz/128vram board, and hopefully this one will last for more than a few days before showing Nvidia's stellar quality signs...

Hey guys, my June 2007 MBP just started doing this tonight:

http://www.bearxor.com/pics/mbpro.avi

I can't tell from the pictures if this has to do with a faulty nVidia chip or not, but I figured it might, which is why I went looking for more info after it did it. Just looking to verify it's the nVidia problem before I contact Apple. I'm not even going to bother going to the Apple store in Charlotte. Piss-poor service nearly every time I go in there.

BTW, when it does this, the cursor moves, but the box completely locks up. I ran the extensive hardware test that came with my MBP but it didn't return any errors.

Just send it to Apple Care.

Has anyone figured out how you find out if you have a Rev 2 board? I just got my early 08 (shiped in march) penryn mbp replaced due to some 8600 issues. i had to drive all over town and take my mbp out of one apple care that replcaed it with ANOTHER faulty board the same day and find an apple store that had the part number. thankfully i found one so it was onyl a two day turn around.

i still get pretty weak FPS compared to what I should be getting but my main question is, there are a bunch of new tabs on the System Profiler under hardware like PC Cards (wtf? - not PCI card btw, PC card), SAS, Parallel SCSI... these settings were not on my system profiler before the logic board was replaced. Whats up?

BTW talk about a PAIN having to redo Time Capsule/TM backups cause the Mac addy changes and eating up iTunes authorizations. I'm surprised some of ya'll got unibodys for this - lucky!

I have those tabs in the profiler too and I never had my replace yet. Could be from the 10.5.6 update. I brought it in June 08 and it is still running fine and I even overclock my gpu lol.

Last week I purchased an early 08 model but coconut identity indicates that it was manufatured in november 2008, how is it possible? Does it mean that even with a 8600gt there should be no problem for me?
Thanks

That sucks! I took my 2.4 early 08 in, 7 days later they call me saying they are going to replace with Unibody. And they gave me a free upgrade to teh 2.53ghz!

Me too!!!

I purchased mine in January as well and have an end of November 08 build date too. I ask the same question and no one seems to know or have an answer for me either.

^Now that I think about it, the fact that the laptop itself was produced after september doesn't guarantee anything since it appears that nvidia has flat out lied about everything. Some are even speculating that they're trying to mix uip the defective chips with the good ones in order to make everything seem normal.
Like I said in the other nvidia thread, it looks like the company is urging the vendors to buy new chips instead of the old ones but what can early 08 mbp owner do? If apple won't be provided with good 8600gt because nvidia has the brilliant idea to simply move on with its production pretending that nothing ever happened, how can apple even try to fix this problem?
To the tech-savvy out there: is it possible to put a non defective 9600 in the penryn mbp model? I know that early 08 Macbook pros are designed to work with 8600 but can't they swap those cards anyway?

The cards are soldiered unto the board and they use different chipsets

Thank you, so nvidia has no choice but to provide apple with good chips of 8600gt...we'll see.

I hate to bump this thread that seems to have quieted down months ago, but I just now started experiencing issues with my macbook pro. I bought it in May-ish of 2008, and it does have the discussed GPU model. I ran the hardware test and got a video controller error and after researching I keep ending up in the same place regarding something wrong with the GPU. I keep being referred to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377?locale=de_AT and noticed it has been updated to 4 years from purchase date. My question is moreso regarding apple's service. My laptop does have a few dents from last year and really early this year, nothing serious but they are noticeable. I don't really ever go up to them about problems or replacements, but in this case I'm positive that the dents didn't cause the failure. I don't know if this would void any chance of getting a repair, and I'm pretty much going with the pre-formed thought that they're not going to believe me when I say the dents are from a year ago. Is there a good chance I can get a repair, or is it pretty much up in the air and depending on the mood of the apple genius?

I know this is an old thread, but my Pro that I bought around Oct of '10 is doing this. Started yesterday and did it again today.

Were the problems not fixed?

It's not the same problem as is indicated in this thread. The problem discussed here is specific to the 2007/2008 MacBook Pros.
Contact Apple to get yours fixed.

Hi everyone,

I've had my 15" MBP since March 2008 and it's been fine, but in the last week it developed a screen defect.

Basically, on the left hand side of the screen, about 5mm in from the edge, there's a vertical strip consisting of a coloured line. It seems like a rainbow of red, yellow, green, purple etc. When you open/close the lid then this line flickers. See the photo attached below.

Is this likely to be an Nvidia fault, or something else? It's within 4 years of the purchase date so maybe Apple will fix it.

Thanks.

If moving the display causes the strip of lines to flicker you're most likely looking at a damaged or partially unseated display cable. I'd recommend taking the computer into the Genius Bar at an Apple Store (if one is available in your area), or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider. In either case, you should be able to have the issue properly diagnosed and receive a quote for how much it would cost to repair.

Best of luck and have a great day. :)

Thanks! It's no longer under warranty or AppleCare so I'd probably have a large bill...

I can't take it in yet as they might be suspicious why I already have Lion installed ;) so I'll take it to the Genius Bar in 2 weeks...
