This is a great point but is exactly the reason Apple has neutered PWAs, so the big platforms can't circumvent the AppStore on iOS devices. Apple are greedy, malicious and anti-competition (which in turn, plays out to be anti-consumer).

Not if you want applications specific to OSes. I love that Apple is bad at supporting the web as an application platform.

Revenue and market share very different.
e.g. If the market for analog watches is everyone with a wrist the fact that Rolex make the most money does not indicate that there is no more money to be had by other watch makers
The market isn‘t everyone with a wrist.

As for the airplay thing. You're now saying Spotify on the web is useless?? So why do they make it? Airplay is not the only way to play music. Thats not a valid argument at all.
No, of course it’s not totally useless. But inability to stream to as home sound system (whether through AirPlay, DLNA, Google Cast or proprietary streaming protocol) makes for an inferior product.

Apple is crippling competitors‘ ability to provide service - either by the commissions charged or by the lack of access/features if they don‘t.

Apple wants to fight competition by any means necessary. If this wouldn‘t be true, Apple would have switched business models or introduced a new one, simple as that.

If Apple would introduce a new business model that ist service oriented (like Amazon AWS or thousands of other companies) we would have:
- Push Notification fee (increasing with the number of PN)
- In App Payment fee
- App hosting fee
- you name it …

This way Apple could create a fair competition and would really get paid for the services it offers. But Apple wants to use its platform as a weapon to lock competition out.

It's time for Timmy to leave. We need new people to lead Apple into the future and bring in fresh ideas.

It works for Amazon AWS because they're B2B.

Businesses should be allowed to create almost any business model they want too, including making an enormous amount of profit. They should be able to charge every party in the ecosystem, multiple times.

Hahaha what? Innocent? Why are they and all the other trading under irelands system in the first place?! Sure it’s legal, but there is nothing innocent about it.

Innocent as in not breaking any laws or regulations in this area.

EU filed charges against Ireland for violating agreements Ireland has with the EU about state aid.

Apple should pull the plug on the App Store in EU countries
They won‘t.
Why? 💰💰💰

Though I am not a fan of Brexit this is one occasion when I am glad the UK is no longer under the EU thumb.
No worries, you‘ll eventually get your own version of the DMA:

„The bill establishes a new, targeted regime built for the digital age, overseen by the Digital Markets Unit (DMU) in the CMA – that will use a proportionate approach to hold digital firms accountable for their actions – enabling all innovating businesses to compete fairly. It will set rules that will prevent firms with Strategic Market Status from using their size and power to limit digital innovation or market access – ensuring the UK remains a highly attractive place to invest and do business for all.“

Why don't you buy an Android phone?
Because I don't want one and don't mind Apple earning money from apps that they created a store to contain. Why does Wal-Mart exist if they don't produced the majority of the products they sell? Amazon Because they buy them for less than what they sell them for. Similar concept to Apple taking 30% or 15% or whatever percentage they will take.

I believe they're talking about the iPhone, not Spotify. Having a smartphone is mandatory today, and as such it isn't acceptable that the second-place player (which they got to by having the best UX and design, not by having a gated App Store) isn't allowing users access to the device they purchased.
“Second place player” and “allowing users access” 😱 So triggered!

Imagine all the people around the world who manage to live without a “smartphone” — I guess they are actually zombies 😂

Hug that droid tight!

No once said Apple can’t make a competing product. It’s favouring that competing product in multiple ways; monetarily, system integration, unique advertisements placed inside system preferences, for example.
Yet Spotify still manages to have twice the subscriber count!

Must be Apple’s fault 😂

I (the customer) have already paid for the device. I own it. It's mine to use and run whatever software on it I want.

3rd party services that run their app on MY phone and do not use Apple services/infrastructure don't owe Apple anything.

I hope the EU will sanction Apple to hell over all this blatant greed.

(The only way this would be even remotely justified is if the phone itself was free...)
If those 3rd party apps running on YOUR phone were built using APPLE’S software and APIs, then they do, in fact, owe Apple something if they monetize in that app.

It’s not rocket science.

There is always the web if they don’t want to use APPLE’S software and APIs.

But Apple created the market for software on these devices!!!!!!

They designed the machines, the designed the api's, the manufactured the devices, they marketed them, spent billions advertising them. They made the decision to open up their api's and created an external development kit for it.

The way the EU talks about it is as if the market was already there!

Of course they have considerable market power on the system they invented and built.

The way the EU attacks this vs the USA is really interesting.
The EU does not want to foster enterpenurialship because its mindset discourages investors and entrepreneurs to play the game to win. Apple have played the game to win for a very long time. They have had no leg up, no govt contract (Elon..) nothing but built on their own hard work and ingenuity.

The EU come in and say thats bad. The USA say as long as you did nothing illegal and customers are getting good stuff and not moaning. Its fine. The EU dont care if they didn't break any laws, they just create new ones to stop them. It's really insane.

Apple could turn around tomorrow and revoke the API's on their devices as they control the OS and stop ANYONE producing software for their systems. It is their legal right to do so. They dont HAVE to create an SDK for anyone, indeed they have hidden API's they DO NOT ALLOW anyone to use even. Its their system, their OS, their IP, everything.

And if the EU are so concerned about Apples monopoly power, why do they allow Logic Pro, GarageBand or any other Apple app on iOS devices that apple sometimes give away for free or at cheaper prices than competitors. Isn't that the exact same thing Spotify are moaning about? The crux of their argument is simply that Apple Music doesnt pay 30% (how they know this I have no idea) so it's cheaper to compete with Spotify. I mean, thats every shop owner who sells their own product!! Walmart, Tesco in the UK. What do the EU have to say about that?

None of it makes sense other than Spotify have spent tons of money lobbying specific EU law makers to deal with a problem that THEY have with Apple because of their lack of margin on their business, because ultimately they are operated by the major labels who have sucked every penny out of them.

People on this forum have a really weird fetish with being babied by Apple. I just want to install some free software on my phone, why should Apple be allowed to deny me that?

You know the DMA also affects Alphabet, Amazon, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft right?
So download XCode (free), program your “software”, compile and install it on your iPhone.

You can do that, right, cause you ain’t no baby and you won’t be denied!

Apple does not even allow you to do that, hahaha.

Every app that you build and load on your phone privately, will be automatically disabled after seven days. Because it would of course be outrageous if I as an owner could just load my own software on the iPhone.

And if you want to share a program with family members, well that's even harder to do, if not impossible.

I would love to see the breakdown of a $1000 iPhone. I would assume a portion of that is going to covering the cost of running the App Store.
Bad bet. There is plenty that goes into producing an iPhone without worrying about funding the AppStore with any profits gained in an iPhone sale. The AppStore or any business should stand on its own. If it can't it can't and shouldn't exist.
Or are the defenders of Apple’s App Store policies suggesting users shouldn’t have to pay anything for the cost of running the App Store, only developers should?
Different ways to make a buck. Consoles choose to get it back via game sales. And under price the console. Apple doesn't under price the iPhone. You could potentially never use the store on an iPhone other than to keep your built in apps up to date. You have little use of a console without games. No different than a physical store. You're a customer, you pay for things within the store. Sometimes you have the option to get a subscription that can lower the price of items in the store or gain you other benefits. You don't have to subscribe to shop. Developers sell items within the store. Physical or virtual/digital stores. They pay "rent" to be on the shelf. When they "sell" an item, a portion/% goes to the store the rest goes to the developer. No one lives rent free in the store. Even if you own the store, you till have to pay for it to exist. You hope to make more money selling other peoples stuff to more than cover the costs of the store and make a profit.

Apple could charge the user a subscription to access the store. But, how many people would sign up? Treating it just like any other physical store is the lest resistive path forward.
Let’s not forget when the App Store first launched Steve Jobs said the intention was to run it as a break-even business.
Intentions change. I think Steve also wanted to get just 1% of the smart phone market too.
And back in 2011 Phil Schiller suggested dropping the commission rate once the App Store got to a $1B/yr profit run rate.
Suggestion noted. Did it become policy? Nope.
Well, I'm sure they brought it up in a board meeting or two and the motion was to not move forward with that proposal.
Everyone has ideas. Not all of them make it out of the thought phase.

True! But if that provisioning cert didn’t expire, people would build and distribute that “free” software to others, and the Dev program would be nullified.

Yes, it’s sad for you and your family only app, but what would you suggest Apple do?

If you’re using Apple’s software and APIs to build useful software for you and your family,
then join the $99 dev program and you can use Test Flight with them to your heart’s content 🥰

According to many users commenting here, it's irrelevant what I would suggest, because this is Apple's lawn. Or in other words: Apple giveth and the Apple taketh away.
