Does the Mac Mini outsell the iMac?

Yeah it does. Considerably so. Since most people already got their own monitors it's considerably cheaper to just buy Mac Minis instead, and even then buying a M2 Mac Mini and a third party monitor is still cheaper than the iMac.

It's just the nature of the PC industry now. All in ones are considerably niche and hardly anyone makes them anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love the design of the iMac. It's absolutely stunning and there's no other computer with a design like it. But it's just not selling compared to the other Macs.

I think the M3 iMac may be the last iMac. All in Ones are a dying market as hardly anyone is buying them anymore, and Apple are one of the few companies still making them.
*All* of the bigger PC manufacturers still make and sell AiO's, lenovo, dell, HP, multiple models too, not like Apple.

The fact that Apple has to release a statement on this proves that there is actually demand for a 'pro' level iMac - so why is Apple ignoring a significant portion of their user base who want an all in one Pro level computer?!

Apple has the best bean counters in the world. I'm guessing they know more than you do and there is a reason there is no 27" coming -- like it was not the huge profit center YOU think it was.

The Studio Monitor is $1599. You really think Apple would sell a 5K iMac for only $200 more than the screen by itself?
Yes, I do! The Studio Display price is indeed a sick phantasy, as it costs as much as a whole iMac used to cost and the panel isn’t any better.
Unlikely. It would also probably have a PRO chip in it, so you can kiss any thought of a $1799 iMac 27 goodbye.
The PRO chip is likely even cheaper to produce than the Intel chips it replaces. $1799 is absolutely reasonable for such a device, but nobody here expects them to stick to 27-inch forever. The real question is how much a 32-inch 6K XDR iMac would cost? $2,499 maybe.

Apple knows a 27 inch model would take sales away from the other hardware that people buy separately
a $3000ish iMac 30" with M3Pros would cannibalize sales from literally nowhere. As I said in my comment earlier, there's about $1500 between the maxed out iMac 24" and the base spec Studio/Display/peripherals with nothing to fill it except a Mini/Display/peripherals combination. Granted that's probably the direction I would go as I don't recommend all-in-ones, but the iMac is Apple and for them to not have a top-tier all-in-one is very peculiar, and the Mini/Studio are still all-in-ones just minus the screen.

Hardly surprising, if they wanted to make a 27" iMac they could easily have done it. The 32" version should be along at some point though. Just don't hold your breath on timing.

I don't see them making an iMac with a larger-than-27" display either. It would be too expensive, and that's a lot of display to waste when the computer starts getting long in the tooth. Like my 27" iMac - it's 6 years old, I could use an upgrade of the computer part, but the display is still just fine.

When do you suppose those folks "moving forward" from their Mac Studios will start complaining they can't simply replace the CPU in their "otherwise perfectly good" Mac Studio ?
The last time I upgraded a CPU was in the 1990s on a Power Macintosh 8500. It’s not high on my list of priorities.

By the time M4 rolls around they might announce a 24 inch Apple Monitor that is literally just the iMac but without the chin and computer parts, and they'll sell that for $700 so you can get a Mac Mini and 24 inch monitor combo for the same price as the iMac was.
The funny thing is not that you think Apple would sell anything that cheap, but that you believe that Apple would make a new form factor so soon. All we got this year was one new color, which basically is yet another darker shade of Space Gray. 🤣

Not a surprise and makes my decisions for the future easier. Glad they are being honest and making it obvious where they would like their old 27" iMac user base to go in their product line up. I probably will not be following but I had already started building up a new high power windows machine in anticipation of this confirmation.

My iPhone and laptop will stay Apple for the moment as they are, currently, the best in the business for those market segments but for my photography, video and audio heavy lifting I am moving back to Windows. And Windows 11 is pretty good and easy to deal with these days where the low power consumption of Apple Silicon is irrelevant.

BTW the idea of using a laptop with a dock and external screens is not viable as I would spend most of my time plugging and unplugging the laptop. I also like a stable always on desktop for my work where backups are automatic and updates nicely scheduled to suite my work flow. The Apple equivalents to this environment are way too expensive and their closed architecture too inhibiting for that sort of money. I can build a very powerful and infinitely configurable Windows 11 machine for considerably less. And I am aware that the iMac was not that configurable with only the RAM being modifiable after purchase but they were not that expensive and you got a decent 5K screen.

The case for the iMac was always marginal but the SoC approach which allows Apple to make very fast, powerful, and low power processors is not what is needed in a desktop designed for heavy duty photo, sound and video work. So Apple's decision makes excellent sense and was inevitable given their design direction. So no hard feelings and I will move back into a Windows environment for my desktop work with the occasional laptop and iPhone upgrade as needs dictate.

I really don’t get all this love towards all in ones. I actually despise them greatly. Having your monitor and computer paired is horrible. I like having my choice of both computer and what monitor and multiple monitors I want. And especially I need all my monitors to match.
I would have never even considered Apple if the all one in iMac didn't exist. I like the lack of cables, the extra desk space and the clean look. Apple seems to trying to copy the pc guys - produce and ugly box with lots of cables. No thanks!

Hoe can this be a surprise? Apple wants you to buy a Mac Mini or Studio with a Studio display. All that speculation was just wishful thinking.

And actually, this is a good thing. If you need raw power that ages fast, you don’t want an all-in-one as you loose the display when your machine needs replacing.

LOL! You can express your opinion all you want. I just stated a fact that is opposite your (false) opinion.

You stated "Why remove a product that was revenue positive?" doesn't sound like an opinion. You seem sure.

Yeah the system they have now is better imo (studio display plus a desktop). It's a lot less wasteful, and I can tell you that collectors don't really like/care for iMacs outside of the color plastic gumdrops and the iMac G4. Everything after that just becomes uncollectible e-waste.

Wow, a bit stunning they're so direct about it. Normally they just don't say anything, so this is new. Course the thing is the 27 was a good deal for the display you got and the machine inside of it - a good deal less expensive than what they charge for a Mac Studio / Studio Display pair.

Well, Apple leaving money on table, (besides a 27 iMac they'd be able to put it in a form factor that lets them up-sell to the higher performance M3's which the 24 just can't cause its razor thin) but its their choice of course.
