I think the M3 iMac may be the last iMac. All in Ones are a dying market as hardly anyone is buying them anymore, and Apple are one of the few companies still making them.

By the time M4 rolls around they might announce a 24 inch Apple Monitor that is literally just the iMac but without the chin and computer parts, and they'll sell that for $700 so you can get a Mac Mini and 24 inch monitor combo for the same price as the iMac was.

Nice of them to confirm, but if they think folks "waiting" are now going to suddenly buy a much smaller 24" ... or a 2x the price Mac Studio + Studio Display..

...they are mistaken

You can't just lower the value prop and raise the prices in perpetuity and expect customers to stick around.

Apple is losing their minds with pricing.
If you buy the base mac studio and get the studio display on sale it’s about 3299 which is roughly what my last intel imac cost me. and AS blows away that intel crap now. So it’s not a bad compromise. Any large imac at this point is gonna be exorbitantly expensive… ya can easily make the current 24” imac extremely expensive with add ons. Having a studio or Mac mini at least ya can tuck it away under your desk with a mount and put external SSDs with it

Not releasing one was a pretty strong clue.

I went from a 27” iMac to a Mac Studio and Studio Display when they launched. I‘m actually happier with this setup. With the iMac form I had to hold onto it a bit longer to justify the cost of upgrading.

The Mac Studio and Studio Display I bought cost about the same as a loaded iMac Pro, but it should be less expensive to upgrade just the computer moving forward while keeping the display longer.
When do you suppose those folks "moving forward" from their Mac Studios will start complaining they can't simply replace the CPU in their "otherwise perfectly good" Mac Studio ?

Interesting idea, but it seems all of the whining about the 24" iMac is about the size of its' screen. How does separating the screen from its' computer address that?

As a user I loved the 27" 1440P and 5K iMacs, but I cringed every time I sent one off for recycling. It's such a waste to throw away a perfectly good and beautiful display. I am so happy the Mac mini is a first class Mac so we can allow the replacement cycles of each component to make sense.
We have like half a dozen iMac 5Ks in my office. They're getting too slow to use as production machines so they just sit there taunting us while we use the mediocre 1440p displays they are willing to pay for :/

Kind of refreshing, honestly, to get a straight answer. I would consider myself a holdout, but if this is the case I can start considering my strategy to get a larger display than my iMac M1 has.
Sorry but after being trained for decades to not expect any answers from Apple regarding future products, I don't believe this answer (or any answer) at all. Are we really expected to take some Apple PR representative at their word on the future of a top selling product line? Ask an Apple exec and see what they say. I take product rumors more seriously than this answer and Verge should know better.

I think it's fine if they don't come out with a 27" iMac and instead push users to the Mac Mini or Studio, but if they're going that route they need to fix their display line-up.

The $1,600 Studio Display is too expensive for most people, doesn't come with a height adjustable stand, and it's STILL lacking HDR, 120hz, and VRR.

They need a 27"/32" display in the $700ish range that supports all modern display tech.
If you can find a 5K HDR display with 120hz and all that, go ahead and buy it. Let us know how much you paid.

Waiting for the price floor to drop out on the M1 iMac and then I'll pick one up for like $499.

I don't know what to do now. I may get the 14 MBP and pair it with a BenQ monitor. I will not get the overpriced studio display. WHY APPLE??????
Because the market for the 27" iMac has been decimated:

- More and more people are switching to laptops - industry wide, not just Mac
- x86 iMacs used to have faster desktop-class CPUs and GPUs c.f. MacBook pros - not so with Apple Silicon. No need to buy both, now.
- The 24" has a bigger screen and much better performance than the old 21.5" iMac and will snag some 27" customers
- Even if you choose an Apple display you now have a choice between Studio and Pro XDR - should they make 2 "large" iMac models?
- Some of us don't actually like all-in-ones and only bought 5k iMacs because the alternatives at the time were an already-obsolescent trashcan or a woefully underpowered Intel Mini.
- 5k has failed to take off in the PC world so 5k panels have become an expensive niche only of interest to Mac users.

The smaller the market the higher the price - I doubt the old $1800 entry price was sustainable by Apple standards, while the Mac Studio/Studio Display combo costs about the same as a high-end iMac would have done if you had to get the RAM from Apple. Plus, if you're not buying your Mac purely to do A/B display comparisons and artefact hunts there are excellent 4k options for a fraction of the price. Then, in 3-5 years time, you can upgrade the computer without needing to buy a new display (or vice-versa).

You are not really forced into buying exactly Studio Display... There's a free market for displays, with some being similar.

Yes, yes, but Apple here is specifically telling Mac Users/buyer to buy the Apple Studio Display.

That's why I'm talking about the Apple Studio Display?

Sigh.

Of course they'd suggest their own product. Why would a business not do that?

Not hard for a customer to realize they can buy any display though.

I want an AIO in our home office. I don't want a two box solution, especially when considering Apple's only reasonable display option is the same size as the iMac we already have. So no large screen iMac means I won't be replacing it with an Mac at all. It's OK at the present time, but had Apple created an AIO solution at 27" or greater I would have upgraded by now. I'm certainly not going to reward them for ignoring my segment.

They should just get rid of the 27" display and sell a 27” iMac with target display mode instead.

May 2021 I bought the 27” intel iMac because I needed to upgrade and didn’t think the new 27” was coming out soon. Looks like that was a good move. At this point, even if they come out with a 30/32” iMac, I think the Mac Studio and a great monitor will be the next move for me. Photography is a lifelong hobby and the image sizes in RAW keep getting larger. The iMac was great, but we may need to move on.

This is such tragedy not having 27” iMac. 😭 I assume the sales was not great. I love the size. If bigger size will be produced, that will be great 😊.

A 4K display with HDR, 120hz, and VRR is better than a 5K display with single-zone backlighting, 60hz panel, and no HDR support.

People will argue 5K is necessary for proper scaling, but I have a theory that they already had the panel from the old iMac 27", and couldn't viably source a mini-LED or OLED panel with the margins they wanted to get with this Studio Display.

Apple has confirmed to The Verge and some other publications that it has no plans to release a new 27-inch iMac with Apple silicon.

iMac-Pro-2022-27-and-24-iMac.jpg

Apple discontinued both the Intel-based 27-inch iMac and iMac Pro over the past two years, and it has yet to launch a larger-screen iMac with an Apple silicon chip as a replacement, leaving the recently-updated 24-inch iMac with the M3 chip as its only all-in-one desktop computer. For customers who want a larger or higher-end desktop, Apple recommends pairing the 27-inch Studio Display with a Mac Studio or Mac mini.

From the report:Apple has only ruled out a new 27-inch iMac, so a larger-screened iMac is still possible. Last month, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple was still developing an iMac Pro with a 32-inch display for release in late 2024 or in 2025. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also expects a 32-inch iMac with mini-LED display backlighting to launch in 2025.

Of course there won't be a 27" version...32" is the new 27" in my opinion. Once you go 32" displays or larger, you never want to go back. Ultrawide is even nicer but definitely 4K and higher is the way to go.

Does the Mac Mini outsell the iMac?
