Apple released tvOS 18 on Monday following over three months of beta testing, but not all of the new features for the Apple TV are available right away.

In a press release, Apple said the following tvOS 18 features are coming later this year:

  • 21:9 projector support
  • Robot vacuum cleaner support in the Home app
  • Some new Apple Originals screen savers, including one for Snoopy

These features should be added in tvOS 18.1 or tvOS 18.2.

What's in tvOS 18 now? Similar to Amazon's X-Ray feature for Prime Video, Apple has introduced an InSight feature that displays timely information about actors, characters, and music on the screen during Apple TV+ shows and movies. Subtitles now automatically appear when users mute a show or movie, when they skip back while watching, or when the language in a show or movie does not match the device's default language. For more, read our earlier coverage of the update, which is compatible with all Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD models.

This whole features won’t be available at launch thing has very much jumped the shark. Not just with Apple either. Maybe don’t announce them if they’re not going to be ready at launch?

Then everyone would complain Apple is too slow and isn't "innovating" (even more so than now). This approach is far better than the way they used to do it, though I wish Apple was more transparent about which things are being delayed and why.

I'm searching for any news about AirPlay with Dolby Atmos support but can't find anything. Someone know anything bout this?

I hate to say it but this is becoming more and more common in the last few years.

Apple announce all their tentpole features for the next iteration of the OS in June - it goes into a 3 month beta/public beta programme for general release in September....

..... but more and more features are just not present in the first release - or the second.....

And in some cases we don't get features until .3 or .4 which come in March or April the following year just 2 months before the NEXT version is announced.

There is a fair bit of frustration this year that Apple Intelligence isn't ready when the new iPhones are delivered - and indeed won't be in its entirety until well into 2025. Personally it stopped me upgrading the phone this time because what's the point when, by the time the features I was promised are released, the phone will be 7-8 months old already.

Surely it would be better for Apple to not announce features that WONT be ready for the .0 release in September or .1 at the latest.

WWDC 2025
“We’re so excited to tell you about these features. In fact, we’re so excited that we’re going to tell you a date that these features will be available to you in theory, but in reality you’ll get them several months later. Here’s someone with a dry personality that will pretend to be excited to tell you more about them.”

That snoopy wallpaper clearly needs some tricky programming …
I mean, I know it's a joke, but it's obvious that Snoopy is the one that is already ready. It's the other Apple Originals screensavers that aren't. So instead of releasing Snoopy now, they are just going to release them all at once. Probably a design delay I'm guessing.

"Subtitles now automatically appear when users mute a show or movie"
oh man thats awesome. Is this restricted to the apple player or apple tv+ shows?
Only works with the Apple TV player. So half my apps do not support it, such as YouTube TV or Plex - and I have no disillusionment that these apps will switch over just for these small features.
