you shouldnt base your phone upgrade on a feature list.

phones are designed to last two or more likely three years these days before there's any need to update.
Do it for the aging hardware not the software on offer.
I don't.

It was a perfect storm of uninspiring hardware changes vs the one thing that would have made me change being the promise that when apple intelligence finally launches that my phone would be able to run it...
.... but my 15 pro max does - and ive no interest in the camera button - tapping the shutter on the screen or using a volume button works fine for me.
Im sure the iPhone 17 will be more interesting.

That said, that's not the point of this thread or the main point I was trying to make.

Again, stop announcing iOS features that aren't realistically going to be available for 9 months, by which time you are only 3 months from announcing the next lot.

Apple intelligence clearly isn't ready right now for prime time - and worldwide at that. Forget the USA there are other countries in the world who would also like to use it!
Given the non committal release schedule we have for this new feature - surely it would have been better to wait until iOS 19 and release it all in one go in September 2025 fully tested and ready.

the hardware changes are so uninspiring that an Android report stated already three Android manufacturers are going to add camera buttons...

geez no doubt Samsung will deride it ... and then add one. ;)

there's very little in any phone that is going to leap ahead. we've had 16 iterations of iPhone - that's a mature product.

look at TVs... no one really needs 8K. And 4K yearly updates are now about other features like better sound, adding external speakers/soundbars. the screens themselves are about as good as they get. bright. fast. good upscaling. even the Smart software changes very little.

so you would rather wait a year for a software feature rather than 3 months? huh???
even 15 hardware is going to have some AI. we've had the hardware cycle that sat out the AI update until a new model arrive. AI needs a lot of server hardware and software optimisation and algorithms. controlled small steps are a far better release than a big fail. this way it can be tested, see what works and what's popular. Apple Watches changed tack and went from luxury high end designs to health features. AI may indeed pivot and head in a different direction once people start using it. currently it is too broad and vague and risks not being what people think it will be.

You are correct in the fact that until there is some quantum leap forward, any phone upgrade is iterative. This has been the case for a long time now.
For interest, I always seem to justify that yearly upgrade and for example going from the 14pro max to the 15 pro max was justified for me with the change to titanium and the addition of the action button and the zoom capabilities of the periscope lens.
This year... nothing.

Your point about TVs is also pertinent. For sure year on year TV manufacturers are ever desperate to come up with the newest buzzword to entice sales but the reality is a 5 year old 4K OLED looks just as stunning as the new equivalent.

But, I stand by what I say. if you are going to announce a slew of features of your upcoming iOS release then please either make it ALL due in September's main release... or at worst a .1 version due in October/November latest - especially this year with a ton of sales taglines that broadly entices with 'comes with Apple Intelligence' which as of 20th September it will not.

If there are features that are supposed to be included in iOS18 that goes on general release in September 2024 - but in reality they won't be released until April 2025 - personally id be happier for them to just not say anything in WWDC 2024 and push it to iOS19 in September 2025 and announce it in WWDC 2025.

Perhaps that's just me.

I’m running the beta and the 21:9 support is fantastic. It doesn’t just work for projectors, it works for ultrawide monitors as well.
i don't :( how did you do that?
i have apple tv 4k 1st gen and 2560x1080 200Hz monitor by hdmi

do you see custom resolutions in apple tv menu?

I read a MR that tvOS 18 was supposed to remove both the Movies and TV Shows apps because they were being incorporated into the Apple TV+ app. I was surprised to see them both on tvOS 18.

if they announced nothing and held new features for a year, do you think they'd sell any new phone?

the yearly upgrade cycle is now probably a stretch but it's what the industry has fallen into. for all phones.
i see little new in Samsung design and features as well.
other brands have played catch up to Apple in style and quality (often by copying Apple) and that has brought prices down with more memory mainly.

It's a mature market but the way we view that market isnt mature. The stock market expect new new new...

Arguably there was more than enough this year with the other iOS18 features AND the camera control button.

That's certainly more than they have had in some other years gone by.

So yes, AI could easily have sat out until it was fully ready in iOS19.

Well TVOS18 has completely transformed my AppleTV4K.
It's transformed it into a door stop.

i dont know what youre reading but most sites and forums are calling this years phone 15S because they dont feel there enough with AI and a camera button...

I haven't read anything.

If you look at iPhone upgrades over the years.. some years the 'pro' gets the lions share of new features (evidenced by the 15 pro) and some years the 'non pro' gets them (evidenced by the 16).
This year the non-pro is a significant upgrade to warrant a change and the pro is relatively minor.

Sure, I appreciate that the 16 pro should really have just been an 'S' upgrade but Apple stopped the S thing years ago.

But, back to the point of the discussion....

AI isn't ready. It's a huge part of the marketing to get people to buy the 16 series.... and in the case of the non pro it's a good buy but that still doesn't excuse the fact that AI won't be 'fully' rolled out until April.

So, therefore, I'll say again.... should have just left it for iOS19.

well some AI coming before the end of the year... and if as you say FULL AI coming April 2025, that's still 5 months before the next model.

in a competitive marketplace, every advantage is usually used.
remember when companies used FUD to stop you jumping ship?
and often didnt deliver...

at least there is a roadmap of what is coming in the next two releases with some detail.
the following two are a bit vague granted.

so therefor, i say it again, why would Apple wait until next year? :)

Perhaps im being a bit impatient.

AI is a particularly unique example of a feature though - given that Samsung and Google have long since launched phones that take advantage of AI and I suspect that Apple knew that it had to be revealed sooner rather than later and waiting for it to be fully baked before releasing it in iOS19 was not an option.

It is an increasingly common trope though. Remember when they announced the feature to control your iPad from the Mac (continuity?) I cant recall the exact marketing term for the feature. Anyway that was announced in June and didn't get released until the following March. AI is no different.

well we all know AI is largely hype for marketing purposes.

I have yet to see much real world phone use on Samsung and little chatter by real world people.

So I would rather Apple take some time, get it right, and find a way to make AI useful.

There's plenty of background AI stuff going on. It's not the fad like some tech. There are good business reasons to use AI - better customer interaction, better language responses etc. If there's money involved (making or saving it) then it is here to stay.

But what's not going to happen are the pie in the sky about AI taking over your life and day to day tasks (at least in this iteration).

I find your comment that you are a bit impatient after saying Apple should have held AI off until next year... huh?
