A black curtain blocking the view of people walking by, a required NDA for employees, and mysterious hardware under lock and key.

I have no idea what this could be, but that doesn't sound like a routine preparation for a back to school event or even the launch of the macbook air--unless they've changed it in a significant way maybe.

Damn sure doesn't sound like a MobileMe revamp.

Agreed. The locking up of all phones, NDA and new hardware suggests much bigger.

This is most likely the pre-reveal of Lion and the next set of Pro Products, possibly the new Mac Pro.

I've seen them prep for the back to school events when walking by the Apple Store in Clarendon...they don't black out the windows or anything of the sort for that and this is way too early for it. BTS doesn't happen till early/mid july in the stores.

Something 'big' is coming.

Apple fanaticism once again in play here. :)

This will be nothing. Apple doesn't operate this way for major announcements. They would announce at an event and set a day for release. No time for that here.

well, I just placed an online order for an apple TV 2 no more than twenty minutes ago - so a new atv wouldn't surprise me at all!

...the fact that the world will not have come to an end the day before, as some have predicted it will.:)

I think I had better delay my Mac order. If the world is ending on the 21st, then I dont want to waste my heard earned cash. :D

I hated having to deal with this ****. Most of the time Apple's deployment strategy for new hardware in retail stores was a pain to make work. Those passwords for the "password protected zip images" (which were typically DMG's anyway) were supposed to be made available by a certain time. Often they weren't, or the website where they were posted on wouldn't be working and by the time you go the disk image to unlock you had all of about 1 hour to deploy a 120GB demo disk image to 40 machines followed by a 20 page walkthrough on individual machine configurations.

CONFIRMED: iCloud

I have confirmed that this is for the iCloud launch. It will be magical.

It turns out the new hardware that the stores have received is not new macs or anything like that. The hardware that they received and will be installing actually transports you to the iCloud when you walk into the store.

This is obviously true because I wrote confirmed in capital letters.

The billboards tell me that the end of the world is on May 21.

This can only mean that on May 22 Apple is releasing the REAL JesusPhone!

If I were Apple, ever once in awhile, I would do something big - completely contrary to the way everyone thinks it will or should happen.

Rumor, a big part of how apple generates massive interest and following, doesn't work if people become convinced they already know the playbook.

This is not a normal 'overnight'. Nor is this a normal meeting.

1. This overnight includes more employees than normal. This overnight also includes more hours. The iPad 2 launch overnight had very few employees, no black curtains during the night, and no cell phones taken away.

2. This meeting had an one week notice. That is not normal at all. Most 'all-hands' meetings have an one month notice.

Then they are probably going to lay off some people.

Steve to announce new Touch Cube

Steve will announce a new version of the Mac Cube with touch sensors on all sides as well as proximity sensors so you can wave your hands around the Mac and it will respond.

Perhaps this rumor is just someone's desperate attempt to prop up AAPL stock which is falling like a brick today?

Working retail, given the timing of the meeting, it could be major... Rarely do stores take and take and do this sort of meeting at that hour unless it is major...

Well, since they NEVER change the playbook and STILL get this kind of fanaticism, I would say that's all they really have to do is spread a rumor like this to get the same effect. :)

They won't change it in this way I can almost guarantee, but we'll see soon enough.

I'm thinking (read hoping) that this could be Mobile Me revamp or even better, something related to Final Cut Pro X.

FCPX sounds possible, given it has already been revealed. Mobile Me Revamp seems less likely... I would think SJ would want to talk about that himself at WWDC, if there's something worth talking about.

If this is accurate then a black curtain blocking the windows can only mean one thing. New staff shirts.

I think it could have something to do with Lion, but why the secrecy? Why would they cover the windows, force the employees to sign a "do not leak" document, and hold the meeting at the same time throughout the United States? I do not think that is normal. :D

Either the "rumors" are bogus or this is an ultra huge event! I am going to my local store for a One to One appointment on Friday and I will ask them regardless. I know what the employees will say: "We know nuttin about nuttin." :)
