I was dumb to install EC beta due increase in speed for rendering in FCPX. The app has huge problems with EC when editing clips, it crashes very fast. I have now reported this 5 times for every new release. Same issue.
So - I will never install any beta from Apple - never again this mess and they now seems incompetent to me.

I wish there was a true maximize function. Fullscreen is nice for watching a movie, not great for work.
I strongly disagree. I use it all the time, with dev tool in full screen and browser in another. Easy swiping with 4 fingers between the spaces. Especially on lower resolution screens like the macbook air

I've been loving El Capitan more than any other previous OSX, to me it's the new Snow Leopard and I've been using it since two months as my main and only OS. There have been some minor bugs but nothing which hindered my work in any way (for example after a reboot f.lux will take two seconds to work). But I don't use Exchange, so i can't comment on that. One thing I would recommend for any upgrading of OS, always do a fresh install and never just install on top a previous OS. An Apple employee has confirmed to me that this is much better and installing over previous OS can slow down your system or/and cause bugs (I've experienced both).
Also, it would be nice if people would comment more about their experience with an update than about waiting for an iOS update or other things.

Doesn't look like they are ever going to fix preview. pdf scrolling is brutally slow and needs some metal love. Remember when Jobs announced how fast preview was compared to acrobat?

People know that Beta software either Windows / Mac OS / Linux etc .. even Google Chrome web browser / FireFox / Safari on the nightly builds n such those are Beta, so people know that there might be bugs / crashes / quirks but people still use them even with those in mind ... Always Backup before you install and do regular backups for the major issue pops and you need to reinstall ...

Is it just me or Preview has just gotten worse: slower responsiveness and more crashes?
For me it is not slower but it is buggier, alot of times when i click on a file in a folder and press the spacebar 3 of 10 times it previews a random file that is on my desktop instead. I have to reclick on the file several times before it previews the correct file :S

This might seem a little like a dumb question, but I haven't done a fresh Mac OS install in yonks and largely forgotten the process; can you install the OS over the previous one but have it keep all your apps and documents or do you have to backup and erase everything?

I'm now a dirty Windows user and, beyond some remote Time Machine and VM use, don't tinker with my Mac at all.

That's basically what an upgrade does: it archives all your files and preferences, wipes the old OS and places everything back. However, it can be those old preferences and application data that can cause incompatibilities and off behavior.

In that case then, it sounds like a waste of time unless one experiences any actual problems. It's like people who say they still regularly clean install Windows; a relic of an older time.

Agreed. However, I've experienced many cases where friends had issues with their Macs after an upgrade that were fixed by an erase and install. Mostly because of app incompatibilities. I find it easier on OS X to just format than try to fix something on an ancient installation. As opposed to Windows where installing all the updates can take up the better part of the day.

Apple seems incompetent for you installing a pre-release and unfinished product. Riiiiiiiiiiiight...

Their incompetence went yesterday when releasing FCPX 10.2.2 - finally the bug went away. just fustraing it lasted too long.

You said it.
Only one incompetent party in this scenario, and it's not Apple.

Well it was fixed yesterday with the update of FCPX. It's not black and white, I would expect releasing a public beta, their professional application like Logic and FCPX should not crash on very basic tasks in the application. I am not expecting it to be bug free, but severe crashed seems odd to me when they control both the OS and the application. It took them almost 2 months to fix the severe crash bug.

Did you sign in thru beta.apple.com site first ?

Yes, the redemption code was already redeemed by me. I then went to the MAS and grabbed it from the purchased tab, as I had download the beta before, but after a few updates it became unstable. I repurposed the drive. Now I've wiped that SSD clean again, and thought I'd see what was fixed/not fixed on PB6. It wants to start me from PB1 again, but I'm not really inclined to do so.

Since GM release might happen towards the end of this month ... Apple isn't allowing straight to PB6 version, I'd wait -- its harsh but you gotta figure out if you want to spend the time going from PB1 to PB6 ..

The latest installer from the App Store will get you beta 5 (build 15a262e). I just downloaded it to test a few minutes ago. The installer isn't labeled as beta 5 or anything, just "Install OS X El Capitan Public Beta".
