Apple today seeded the fifth beta of an upcoming macOS macOS Monterey 12.3 update to developers for testing purposes, with the new software coming a week after the release of the fourth macOS Monterey 12.3 beta.

Registered developers can download the beta through the Apple Developer Center and after the appropriate profile is installed, betas will be available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences.

macOS Monterey 12.3 is a major update that introduces Universal Control, a feature that Apple first teased at WWDC and then delayed for several months. Universal Control is designed to allow you to use a single mouse/trackpad and keyboard across multiple Macs and iPads (with iPads running iPadOS 15.4).

After updating your devices to macOS 12.3 and iPadOS 15.4, Universal Control works automatically, allowing your Mac's cursor and keyboard to work on the iPad and vice versa. It's simple and intuitive to use.

macOS Monterey 12.3 adds support for updating the AirPods firmware when the earbuds are connected to a Mac, plus it deprecates kernel extensions used by Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive, and it eliminates Python 2, with Apple instructing developers to use an alternative scripting language like Python 3 going forward.

There are also new emoji characters, including melting face, biting lip, heart hands, bubbles, beans, face with diagonal mouth, palm up hand, eggs, troll, low battery, coral, lotus, and more.

macOS 12.3 beta 5 (21E5227a)

Kernel

Deprecations

  • The kernel extensions used by Dropbox Desktop Application and Microsoft OneDrive are no longer available. Both service providers have replacements for this functionality; Dropbox is currently in beta. (85890896)

Python

Deprecations

  • Python 2.7 was removed from macOS in this update. Developers should use Python 3 or an alternative language instead. (39795874)

Universal Control

Resolved in macOS Monterey 12.3 Beta 5

  • Fixed: Unexpected disconnections might occur on initial connection. (88106231)

Known Issues

  • Drag-and-drop scenarios might not work for some file types and apps. (88106322)
  • Some third-party keyboards and mice might encounter issues when using additional functionality, like scroll wheels. (88106362)

WebKit

Deprecations

  • Support for inline viewing of PostScript files is no longer available. (88172449)

Still not seeing it...
When it does pop up, this install seems smoother, it came up with asking for admin password, then agreement, then right to download. Its installing now after popup countdown disappeared, there is still like 20-30 second delay before Mac restarts.

Safari Version 15.4 (17613.1.17.1.5)

System Firmware Version: 7459.101.2 (M1 based Macs)

Darwin Kernel Version 21.4.0: Mon Feb 14 22:26:41 PST 2022; root:xnu-8020.101.3~4/RELEASE_ARM64_T8101 arm64

Safari version is Safari Version 15.4 (17613.1.17.1.6) up from (17613.1.17.1.5). Music app hasn't changed. This is defo the latest beta before the RC (which we already kinda knew anyways), if not the RC itself.

Perhaps they slowed the changes to get Universal Control to work better. It works but they list two bugs still.

Anyone with an M1 MBA and iStat installed… What does this version of Monterey say your battery life is off a full charge? I know on Big Sur I get 20:00 hours and I can be on it all day and barely run the battery down 50% and that’s running video streams and lots of tabs open on Safari and lots of refreshing for page updates.

The reason I ask is because some here claim their MacBook Airs are only getting around 12 hours off the get-go and I don’t want to update and lose 8 hours of battery usage.

Also has the scrolling on Safari been fixed with this newest beta? Monterey in general has been a bit laggy in that regard (at least it was on my 2015 MBP). On Big Sur it’s much smoother from my experience.

Using the site that bugs me a bit against how fast Safari draws a HTML page with lots of jpegs. This time I scroll to the bottom and then compare Safari 15.4 to Firefox 97.01 on how fast that bottom 3 rows redraws. It's almost as fast now. So this build IMHO its more optimized now.

Now that I look at this closer you can see the fast scrolling in Safari occurring like lots of small steps versus Firefox which doesn't do that.

I hope they fix the scroll issue and 3rd party input bugs with UC before public release. I would think that’s pretty important.

I have found a workaround with command and shift key modifiers not working when any input devices are connected via Bluetooth but it does work via USB or disconnecting any Bluetooth devices in using only the internal keyboard of the Mac. A workaround should not be needed for a public release though.

Any with MBP 14 can see if this is fixed?

I was using private window, at times its done that more when accessing the blu ray.com server is slow. Like Safari has a finite amount of time to download page content. Later during the day with the site less busy it drew them all. On IpadOS beta 4 its far worse never mind which mobile or desktop requested views its shows many rows of blank jpegs. But the scrolling is a lot more fluid on the IPad then the 24" IMac Safari's.

So 12.3 should be ready by the time the new Macs launch this spring. 12.4 will be available at the end of June ready for the iMac Pro and 13.0 will launch with the new Mac Pro October 2022.
